Re: N9/Maemo6/Nokia General Chit-chat

I got a disagree with that. I find Lumia 800 keyboard just maybe the best there is. Prefer it over N9, iPhone 4 and GS (phone i have owned).
N9's haptic feedback might be the best there is. Though after using iPhone, GS i have kind of been put away by the haptics. Lumia 800 just gives me less errors and i can type fastest on it.

Just don't get me wrong here. As far as i'm concerned we are talking about the best ts keyboard i have tried against the second or third best ts keyboard i have tried.

Re: N9/Maemo6/Nokia General Chit-chat

Personally, I find that I make more errors typing on the Lumia keyboard than on the N9 keyboard. I'm also missing the tactile feedback on the Lumia, and the keys are smaller.
But otherwise the Lumia keyboard is an excellent keyboard, no doubt about that. But IMHO the N9 keyboard is even better.
I'd even say the N9 keyboard is better for typing long texts than the N900's hw keyboard (where the keys are also very small).

Seeing that the first operators which initially had the N9 in their portfolio (Vodafone in Oz, T-Mobile in Austria) have already discontinued it in favor for the Lumia, I today ordered me a second N9 (this time in Cyan, the color I originally wanted). Now I have a spare as I fear the N9 will no longer be available anywhere by end of this year... And I don't see any other mobile replacing it for me in the foreseeable future...

Me in Germany gets a "EU-Import" so it is almost guaranteed to be Made in Finland. My black 64 GB from Denmark is also Made in Finland, so the new Cyan 16 GB should also be.

True.
Thus, I got all the three colors... and all r made in Finland, thanx to our Dubai purchases. I'm now waiting for the "White".

I also seriously believe that by the yr-end our N9 shall become a 'collector's item'.

WhatsApp Petition for MeeGo:
One last push before contacting WhatsApp !

Guys,

It's not about whether WhatsApp is big, omni-present, I want it etc. It's about the longitivtiy of our MeeGo. Thus, if more apps & worldwide support 'matters' towards that end - so be it.

Lets join hands in filing our support to what Constantinos started in Nov-2011... even Sotiris Makriyiannis, Nokia’s Head of MeeGo Applications when contacted, felt that if a sensible number of support was found - they could start sending letters to try and negotiate something with WhatsApp.

I don't use WhatsApp, but I do want MeeGo forever. My Nokia Blog is promoting this last push [see below link]... so, for the love of God [uh, MeeGo] LET'S DO IT !
http://mynokiablog.com/2012/01/11/wh...ting-whatsapp/

Here's the link to the Petition, once again:

I do have one of them. NFC pairing is a dream and sound is really awesome for such a small speaker. I'm planning to get a second one in the next time.

Thanx marrat.
On the sound quality... r they just like any of those laptop/desktop speakers [of course with better specs] we place on our tables, or they comparative to more traditional music system speakers?

Somewhere in between I'd say. The quality is definitely better than your average PC speaker set even with pretty good bass reproduction (not too thumpy of course, lacking some more diameter).

Played with the 360s in the shop and sound quality is decent, louder than I expected and NFC pairing works well. Would like some my self but expensive considering its a single speaker. Waiting for a deal, anyone know any ?

It could be free :D:D:D

If you are lucky enough and live in Singapore or Thailand (like 2 months ago)

Singtel is doing a promo while 360 speaker stocks last.
as for Thailand , the promo has already ended :(

Above promo = buy Nokia N9 you get a free 360...
Singapore = with contract
Thailand = no contract needed (but it's over,,,,,)
OMG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Don't have problems with battery or with apps crashing. Main 3 screens have become slower than they where before. had the phone since the very first day it came available anywhere.

Is there a Guide for new users of the N9 or Meego?

e.g. like install this and do that first before you get it going?

My game plan so far is to first install the Nokia PC suite that is compatible ( I have XP so from what I understand I cant get NokiaLink) and then start up the phone and try to get the latest software update, then start to sync everything from my N97 (contacts, calendar, music) then sync my google and skype

thoughts? ideas?

Anything essential to have for a top tier MeeGo experience that isnt included in a stock N9?

Re: N9/Maemo6/Nokia General Chit-chat

Ovi/Nokia store now has a lot of useful customisation apps. Browse the top free section.

Some to get you started

- battery usage
- calendar feed
- cloud gps
- cute tube
- File Manager/File Box
- Heebo (fav game on the store)
- Home screen settings (turn on landscape mode for home screen)
- Internet radio player/ IPradio
- Live view
- MeeBirthdays
- Netview
- QuasarMX (alternative music player)
- ScreenCapture

As for syncing contacts - have them sync to a service rather then simply copying them over. Use MFE to sync with google (if u use/like google?).

Also backup on occasion and move the backup to your computer.

Enjoy

Re: N9/Maemo6/Nokia General Chit-chat

thanks for that, yea the Ovi store availability has seriously gotten larger since I first looked, gone from basically 1 page with ~20 apps to quite a bit more

Re: N9/Maemo6/Nokia General Chit-chat

i have a question related to upgrading the firmware and now that PR1.2 is being mentioned its become a little more important to me...
My wife has a black N9 that i bought for her in Qatar - about 6 weeks ago she got the message to update her firmware - both single updates to apps and the system update.
She's currently on initial firmware; since she has no cellular data plan to speak of - and a very sketchy internet connection (due to intermittent broadband and also power interuptions) what is a reliable way that i can get her N9 updated to PR1.1 (or even 1.2)?
Is there a way i can download the update myself using a reliable broadband connection, save it to a USB stick and then later update her N9? If so, how?

Second question is for those who have been using the rubber case that came with the N9 - what other case/s have you been using along with the rubber case?
Anyone using a case that has a wrist strap?
tia :)

Enable zoom in video recording on your N9 !
------------------------------------------------------------------------
Posted by SlipKoRnSaad
http://maemobriefs.blogspot.com/2011...e-zoom-in.html
------------------------------------------------------------------------

In 5 steps you'll be able to zoom during video recording with your lovely N9, I also tested it, it works fine :

1- Enable developer mode (Settings> Security> Developer Mode) if not already done.

2- Download the file camera.conf
http://www.box.com/s/1mjsq0g5kxyk72utiq3n

3- Open Terminal and enable root acces :
-devel-su
-password : rootme

4- Copy the downloaded file in the etc directory:
cp/home/user/MyDocs/camera.conf/etc/camera.conf

5- Restart the device.
/sbin/reboot

Note:
-It can now zoom both with the top bar (like the pictures) and with the volume rockers.
-To remove this tweak just delete the file by repeating the procedure from step 2 to step 5 and type this command:
rm/etc/camera.conf

N9 Apps : MeeCamHor
[Capture Pictures with FFC]
http://img811.imageshack.us/img811/5...pmeecamhor.jpg

What a horrible name for an App!
But we finally have an app to utilize the FFC on our N9′s to take photos. "Take a photo of yourself everyday to see how much you have changed!" It isn’t a free app, costing CAD$0.99, but it works as advertised, so that should be fine. Even though it should have actually been a free feature - included by default.

Download it here:
http://store.ovi.com/search?q=MeeCamHor

Note: This app requires firmware PR 1.1 or above.

Re: N9/Maemo6/Nokia General Chit-chat

so i am guessing that since nobody has answered my question about an "offline" download and subsequent upgrade of the n9 firmware it isnt possible?
does the NSU "save" a local copy of the firmware file somewhere such that i might be able to copy it and then use it later?
if i could use my fast internet connection which is stable that would be the preferred route then later use that file to upgrade the firmware.
or am i going to have to suffer the intermittent internet and download a approx. 1GB file?

thanks - am i to assume that with this way of upgrading that the apps that have been downloaded will be no longer there and need to be reloaded?
Does using NSU require reloading of apps?

NSU: all integrated apps will be up to date (latest ones, as they are included in that big 1 Gb package), but all other apps, you have to download again ... and it does NOT affect your data either, all your photos, videos, etc. are still there ... so practically, you will need only download those unintegrated apps ... (but to be sure, do a back up in any case, to avoid any loses) ... and be sure that you have the latest NSU (well, if I remember right, NSU want update itself when you start to use it) ...

Just so folks in the future are aware...
This isn't the general help thread, it's the general chit-chat thread.

We didn't start it for Qns for which answers can be found by searching.
It's meant to be news, facts, & chats about Nokia-related stuff.

Tips/findings can be posted, but it's generally a help-seeker-free zone.

In the future, can you please post such findings here (also see 1st link in my sig).

It's been sticked by the mods, so users are more likely to share their findings.
But lately it's become much quieter than we had hoped for...
