I thought "push" means server pushes data into the phone as soon as it has something. Phone connects to server when it sends something.

but the hassle of making your contacts to start new service and if they don't have compatible phone out of luck, why not make some like this that taps on im services to make it a push message?

Technically yeah, but I was trying to simplify it :P

But in order for the phone to receive from the server, it must periodically check for the update flag the server sets when a new message is available

Re: Ebuddy XMS is out now

I have to thank XMS as I use it a lot to message with my wife. I missed the media functions that Whatsapp has but XMS has something that is more superior which is the web messaging function. I can send messages via XMS website to my wife's XMS client on her phone and the message i sent via the web also appears on my phone so i still keep the full conversation. So this is really very very useful.

however, i do think that XMS needs to be more efficient. I still find it too slow in starting up and navigating within the app feels laggy when there are to many messages...

I got a dupicate icon after install from store (I uninstalled previous one first), I cannot delete 1 of the XMS Icon, both icon run the ebuddy very well.

I checked there is no other desktop at the application folder, how to solve it?? many thanks

The other big diff. from traditional IM's is that it works based on your mobile no, not any handle etc.

They will constantly stay connected to the server meaning as soon as a message is sent, it is received and so forth, this KILLS battery as there's ALWAYS data being used.

XMS is a push messaging system that only periodically sends and receives from the server, this means less wasted battery and the results is something that isn't as fast as traditional IM's but its benefits of reduced battery use far outweigh any downsides

Hi!
Thanks for explanation, I would not explain it better myself :)

Indeed, push messages prevent your battery from draining and, at the same time, allow you to get notifications on new messages.

Best regards,
Aleksandra

Aleksandra, thank you for your and your teams hard work in bringing this to the N9. Early releases always have bugs but i'm confident this app will go far. Keep up the excellent work :)

eBuddy XMS is cross-platform, so we hope you have friends on other phones who use XMS :)

Best,
Aleksandra

Most of my friends use N900s, which is not part of the "cross-platform."

Hi!

You're right, we don't officially support N900, but if your friends have Qt installed on N900, it should be supported.

AFAIK, Qt is available on PR 1.3 and CSSU. And where can I download a workable version for N900?

Just use the same one us N9 people are using, BUT the tricky part might be executing it to start.

It might have an icon, but you might have to look into creating your own .desktop file in order to start the app after installing it.

Install the .deb file on your N900 using the dpkg -i <filename> command.

If somebody could post the .desktop file that we have for the N9 version it might help out our N900 friends

@Alex
So since I'm the only one among my friends that has N9, others use Iphones, E72, Blackberrys etc, if I install Ebuddy XMS, and they also do the same, can we still reach each other using different models? Off-course not for E72 as U previously mentioned, but when?

If this is possible then I'll advice all my friends to install it!

Mate, if your mates install the eBuddy XMS app on their iphones, blackberries and android phones, you will be able to chat to them from your N9 :)

Its a cross platform messaging app, I just don't think they have the Symbian S60 3rd edition devices support yet as I don't think them devices have Qt

Read this bug report and all the comments...
https://harmattan-bugs.nokia.com/show_bug.cgi?id=486

Also read the idle consumption thread....
It's unlikely to be anything to do with the app, just a coincidence.

The thread or the bug-report? The TMO thread talks about several "possible causes".
Some of which have fixes or nearly do, some of which are still mostly speculative.
The bug-report talks about one "possible cause"...
It's one of the few "possible causes" that have managed to build-up a solid argument.
A few workarounds have even been discovered for it...

Check battery usage, if it stands out as a high consumer then your suspicion may be right.
If you can't see anything, then try to identify the same issue described in that report.

This reported issue usually kicks-in once a user has installed a new program.
It is readily reproducible by some users now....
So devs have a good chance of identifying what's making the daemon run rampant.

Subscribe to that report, it'll get interesting in the next few wks.
It's not high volume, so you won't be spammed constantly.

I also mailed the eBuddy support to make a Maemo5 build. Seems that all deps are available, just a different crosscompiler or libstdc++ has been used :S

eBuddy shouldn't be showing as top consumer if it's off.
You probably need to wait longer before something else shows near the top.
If idle consumption remains very high with it off for a few days.
Then you may well have the issue I was describing...
In which case read that bug-report, as there's workarounds explained there.
Some have even come up with a script....

I may not respond in this thread for another week or more.
Monitoring TMO & FMC less lately, have too much work :-/
I suspect this issue really does have nothing to do with eBuddy though.
So it may be best to take it to the idle consumption thread or bug report.

Ok here my feedback, using Ebuddy from Ovi

1) UI and Incoming Tone, super cool!
2) Settings Button is useless, U can't change anything there, couldn't get the option to load an Avatar, maybe I'm wrong.
3) My Friend on Iphone seems to love his too, not sure what the difference is. But he wanted to know why I don't use Whatsapp, so I lied and said I'll load it soon :(
4) The down part, I have a contract SIM and a Prepaid SIM, I mostly use the Prepaid one to cut costs, I normally buy 10MB daily just for FB & Twitter, it lasts me till the following day. So today I loaded 10MB and switched off FB & Twitter and focused mainly on EBuddy, within 20min all my Data bundles and Airtime I had loaded was gone, this means consumption on Data Bundles is high, I think this happens because it goes through FB to collect Friends info and that kills Data! Any experienced this? If I had a local WLAN I wouldn't complain now :( Damn! I switched it off!

EDIT
Ok I take number 4 out, it seems I was wrong, somehow Twitter & FB Feeds collected updates for the last 2 days, and I though I turned them off..... So now I deleted those accounts completely, now Ebuddy seems to be much lighter, even on the battery too it's improved from when I first had it. What I've picked up lately is that the 1st day when there's a new App battery drains, if U leave it there longer the phones seems to settle it... :D

Re: Ebuddy XMS is out now

Well I should be well away from these forums, but I've got some minutes to kill.
Some good feedback, that's what this thread is all about.

So make up some reason/s why you like eBuddy more! ;)

It seems after further investigations it's indeed consuming more Data than it's supposed to, I deleted FB & Twitter and reloaded my Airtime, purchased another 10MB which normally last me 24hrs, within 40 minutes it's finished again! Something is not ok!

The rest I love it, since my friend has both, he says it almost looks like Whatsapp but it has better looks and colourfull than Whatsapp. I'm definately sure that it's gonna look more awesome when the full version comes out! How do I add my Avatar?

Where's Alex to come explain this further!

There's also a Facebook support page she mentioned earlier in the thread IIRC.
Plus there's another thread at forum.meego.com....

How do you change the username in the app? I foolishly entered some non-ASCII characters (that's what I get for trying to use my real, non-english name...) and they got mangled.
