Re: Fennec 14.0 and more (updated 2012-08-04)

The CSSU-Thumb2 repo (see http://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php?t=84829) contains Fennec 17. That is the fastest version I've tried so far (and I tried a lot of them).
I did switch off Javascript, which seems to make a big difference so maybe that is the main reason.

The difference may also in part be due to the Thumb2 improvements, so I am not sure if simply compiling Fennec 17 normally is useful.

And have in mind the one in repo is a nightly with slower js engine that what should be, when have some spare time will upload a better one

You're not browsing the web if you have JavaScript turned off. Every modern web page that a normal person would go to uses JavaScript.

Fennec on ARM is dead. The Gecko engine will still receive updates so we can render the latest web sites and use addons, etc, but as far as performance and UI Mozilla will never touch it. While it is admirable that one person is attempting to get a Qt build working I'd recommend that they use their free time on a newer mobile platform with faster, newer hardware - which would certainly be running Android.

one newbie-question: what is the latest qt-based version of fennec available? i tried a nigtly version in the past, it seemed faster than GTK+ versions...

(im searching it for N900, even unofficial compiled versions :) )

Selective JavaScript enabling/disabling is the way to go.

Especially for Mobile devices with limited resources like the N900

Luckily "NoScript Anywhere" Alpha still works on Fennec builds.

That makes Fennec superior to all Javascript ON / Javascript OFF solutions.

What about Fennec 17 included in CSSU Thumb repos? Also I'd like to know can I build those source codes for Maemo N900? http://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.o...t-beta/source/ or it's mission impossible...

Should not be a problem, will do that. When I have some spare time.

EDIT:

The only way to know is to try. Though it seems it is possible http://talk.maemo.org/showpost.php?p...0&postcount=11

fennec*

Errors were encountered while processing:
fennec
E: Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (1)

I had the same problem while uninstalling Fennec 17, and the problem is in the prerm scrpt which is buggy:

in that script, the package manager tries to kill all the instances of fennec using a loop with a sleep and a kill inside; the script is located in:

/var/lib/dpkg/info/fennec.prerm

in order to count the number of Fennec instances still running there is the following line repeated 2 times:

RUNNING=`ps | grep "fennec.*/fennec" | grep -v grep | wc -l`

which sometimes produces 1 or 2 as a result even if there is no fennec running (it should return 0 in that case, and return without errors to dpkg). This is due to the pipe which calls ps that shows lines like 'grep "fennec.*/fennec"' or even the script 'fennec.prerm' itself that are erroneously recognised as fennec instances by the subsequent grep calls in the pipe...

To avoid this problem You can do 2 things:

1. to call the uninstall process (with Ham or whatever method You prefer) while at least 1 instance of Fennec is running, or alternatively

2. to change the lines like the above (there are 2 of them) with the following one (You need sudo or rootaccess):

RUNNING=`ps | grep "fennec.*/fennec" | grep -v fennec.prerm | grep -v grep | wc -l`

#Change version number (optional):
