Ops, you are right. Conversations are not a huge problem for me, but sharing my address book is another big reason for not using whatsapp. I would need to have a separate address book for it, wich is more difficult to happen. Long live to gtalk!!! XD

Although it would be nice addition for many users, but I find no advantage for having the password chosen/entered manually (yet).

Whats the point of binary coding (I'm assuming this is base64) the stanzas first?

Are you sure it's not just GZIP compression?

BTW - impressed with the client, it looks basic, but impressive non-the-less.

EDIT:: Google talk video calling is also available on the ovi store.

Well one advantage is that tags and attributes are maintained mainly on server and client side. And so you'd only send and receive references to these data to use to reconstruct a stanza. This means less data transfer over the network..

Will this end as a proper Pidgin or IM plugin, or do we go the Android/iOS route with individual "apps" for every function/service? (not that i will use it, just curious if there's a change in approach for Maemo)

Whatsapp has some features which aren't going to be available or utilized if implemented as a plugin. For example; message delivery to server and delivery to friend indicators. It might eventually end up as both (a standalone app and a plugin), however, my priority now is a standalone app.

just a quick question, does it support push notification?

dcastrog 2012-03-02 03:57

Re: [WIP] Porting Whatsapp to Meego/Maemo (N9, N900)

well, in my opinion a plugin looks like a cleaner option for MeeGo/Harmattan, but the "received message" confirmation is a core feature of whatsapp, something that might only be achieved with the stand alone app. I will use either app :)

Can we also get the whatsapp info integrated into the system? That would be amazing, like a vibrate function for messages and a message on the lockscreen? For the N9 of course. OMG.... YES!

Re: [WIP] Porting Whatsapp to Meego/Maemo (N9, N900)

WhatsApp will have a new mechanism (DIGEST-MD5-2) to be used in the login process.
The new mechanism will depend on a challenge string to generate a response and send it to the server for authorization.
I think the current procedure which was mentioned earlier will be deprecated soon.
I tried to decompile the latest copy of android's version to identify the challenge string but it's obfuscated.

Re: [WIP] Porting Whatsapp to Meego/Maemo (N9, N900)

LINE (http://line.naver.jp/en/) is another cross platform messenger just like Whatsapp. It also have voice call over data network like Viber. And it's free (not like Whatsapp, it's free for first year and then charges US$0.99/year). So in my area my friends usually have both Whatsapp and LINE and that make the switch between them very easily (not like ebuddy XMS that almost none of my friends are in).

Lately LINE claim that they will provide PC/browser version really soon. I think this is good as it can be accessed at least from browser for the devices (e.g. N9) that are not supported by the nice company (e.g. Whatsapp company) (and maybe it can be integrated into extraplugsin from PC version just same as MSN and ICQ?? my greedy hope :p)

In my area LINE is quite a strong competitor to Whatsapp and I hope this move from LINE could help "pushing" Whatsapp to do the same thing. Or the PC/browser version of LINE could help providing more ideas of how to port Whatsapp to non-support device (again N9 for example).

As for communication with the server, XML stanzas are binary encoded before being sent, and received data are decoded into XML stanzas.

Right now it's only a matter of completing the UI. And I think this will be real soon ;)

last i heard it was only the matter of compiling been checking this thread every day i really hope to see the result of the progress :)

The nicknames they recovered by WhatsApp security issue are indeed funny... so we know it's not the most secure service, but a lot of people use it, so we have to deal with it... even if it is then possible that some stranger laughs about your nick, jeje...

Once there is a working framework, we can tweak or insert fuzz codes to make detection harder if not impossible. :)

Re: [WIP] Porting Whatsapp to Meego/Maemo (N9, N900)

First of all, tgalal and other devs working on this, thanks a lot for your effort, great job!

Maybe I am a bit naive here, but has ever someone asked Whatsapp Inc. if they are interested in a cooperation?
I assume the only reason why there is no official app is that they think it is not worth the effort creating a Harmattan client.
If someone (e.g. one of the devs working on this port) would offer them to develop a client for them more or less for free, why would they decline this offer?
Wouldn´t this be a win-win situation?
Whatsapp would be present on another mobile platform and get more users, the devs would get all relevant information without reverse engineering and the community would get Whatsapp...

(ok, I understand the devs here might like the challenge to do it without the official support, but in the end, isn´t a full featured, nice and reliable app what we all want most? ;))

I E-mailed them that day and I got the exact same reply from them they are totally not interested in making an N9 version which I really couldn't understand.

Did you ask if they will release a N9 version or did you ask if they are interested in a cooperation with community devs?

From a business perspective, I think there are reasons that make it totally understandable why they don't create an app for N9 themselves.
But I don't see why they would reject an offer where they would get an app more or less for free (unless there are political games going on I don't know of).

Re: [WIP] Porting Whatsapp to Meego/Maemo (N9, N900)

i mentioned cooperating with them and they sent me the exact same replay, the thing is that they seem to have a specific reply to any thing regarding the n9 as they replied me with the exact same text mentioned above more than one time with several different questions. It could be just an auto reply of some sort.

The question is why would a developer offer them an app that he created, for free.
