But thanks for the help Marcos, I am now finally able to install python, uktube, ukmp on my 770 with os2007HE.

also, a possible explaination is that the repositories were recently updated, but the updates contain errors which are causing these problems.

Hi I am unable to flash my n770 with the software downloaded from nokia using windows. The error message say your UI is in incompatible mode and I can only see my kingston memory card. Can tell me what is the problem. thanks.I follow the instruction but can never get into the n770 inside. Pls any kind soul reply

You need to turn the 770 off. Connect it to the USB cable, hold down the "Home" button and turn it on with "Home" still held down.

It'll show a USB icon in the top right. The upgrade software will now find it.

Finally I can connect by switching to blue pill mode but the os2007he is an invalid file, using nokia update software. can help?sad evry day a struggle to manage n770 but somehow still like to tinker with it.

right. that's version 0.4-10, not 0.4-12. either way, red pill mode lets you install the fix, so all is good.

Sorry, Mike, I got mine so long ago totally forget where I got it from, likely I may have turned on the red pill too. Good to hear you solved the problem, this beast is difficult to tame.....

Just a thought, would installed 0.4-10 via app manager trigger an upgrade to 0.4-12? Or that has been tried?

The 770 shouldn't be booted up, which clearly yours is.

Remove the charging lead. Switch the unit off by pressing the power button and selecting the power off option. Wait for the 770 to shut down and the screen to turn black (no backlight on).

Connect the 770 to the USB cable, which is connected to your PC. Press and hold the "home" key then hold the power button for 3 seconds till the unit powers up. Release the power button.

Release the home button when the little usb symbol at the top right of the screen is displayed (this should be as soon as the screen comes on).

Run the Nokia software, it'll find the 770 and update.

Thank The _FBI I manage to connect to n770 correctly I think my file downloaded from this link may be for Linux flasher. That is why it say invalid file "cannot upgrade". I saw the option to upgrade the oringinal os2006 instead.may I ask you is there os2007he special for windows or only linux and mac? thanks

I successfully installed Python 2.5 version 0.4-12 with red pill mode. Very interesting. However, now, most probably because of this installation, I completely lost the .deb file association. This means when I click on a .deb file in web browser, it is opened as plain text web page and not with application manager. Do you know how to restore this association?

Nothing special needed. Download the 2007HE file from the website manually, then select (browse for) it within the Nokia firmware update application (Start, Programs, Nokia, Nokia Internet Tablet Update Wizard)

Thanks for the great set of posts in relation to the latest Hacker Edition.

Just got my 770 cheap on Amazon.co.uk with the Nokia Nav kit for about £94. Having great fun with the 2006 version, but thought it was abit slow - under the HE seems to bit faster. Am getting envious looks from guys in office. Love the FBreader and the streaming radio.

Not really played with the Nav kit, but FYI : the Navicore Personal 2007 Europe edition software runs under this Hacker Edition. Looking forward to trying this version with Orb - was nice under the 2006 version.

Looking forward to doing moving over to using the mmc for running - give me more space to install apps, too :) .

Speaking of Orb. I installed the new 2007HE and decided to try Orb. I am having a tough time. I set the bitrate to 80, changed the streaming to RM on both the server and the 770 but cannot get video to stream. I set up portforwarding and made sure UnPnP was turned on in my router. I can get audio to stream and I can get video to work when viewing from my laptop, but on the 770 it just opens mediaplayer, then nothing. BTW, I am running Vista on the server.

Any tips would be appreciated.

i've had(am having) the same problem. i did recently install Python 2.5(v0.4.11), but not in red pill mode. i installed microb-browser around the same time, and have been thinking it was related to that. i thought that there should be a way to modify the file associations in the opera.ini file, but that doesn't seem to be the case. i normally don't use opera, just on the n770, so it's giving me a "training opportunity".

The 'association' problem is related to garage.maemo.org server problems I think and not to anything you guys have done. Try opening the same deb file from your desktop pc. It will result in the same text garbage. qed. I'll try to talk to quim gil today of that issue.

thanks for looking into this. however, i was able to download on my desktop with no problems and was prompted to "save to disk or open". a workaround was to just open the file completely in opera(with microb-browser installed) and then save the file. after saving the file, i was able to rename the file from some_file_name_deb.htm to some_file_name.deb. installing the file from the application catalog worked fine after that. maybe it's something to do with the microb-browser??? i've been trying to look into the mime types to see if that just needs to be modified. it should open *.deb files in the application catalog.

I have the Hacker edition installed and it is working great. I noticed that when I charge the battery it never indicates that the battery is fully charged. It just keeps on charging. Has anyone else had this problem? Is this a bug?

Cancel this question. I left it charging all night and it finally showed that it was fully charged.

Version number in the software doesn't reflect the build details (which are correct in the filename). Check the output from uname -a, if you're running the latest OS 2007HE it should be:

I downloaded flash 9 tar and saved it to my "download" folder on my memory card. Where are you supposed to save this file? Will the commands shown find my downloaded file in the folder I saved it in?

It doesn't matter where you save it, just change to the directory where you have saved the file (using the "cd" command) then execute the tar command as specified.

I got Flash 9 installed on 2006os and it was not that hard . it runs fine on it . The HE os 2007 was locking up and rebooting on me to much. So if you like to run 2006 os an still have flash then check out my post. Also this info will help you install flash 9 on 2007 HE .

Short version: I can't get initfs_flash to work properly.

Long version:

I had installed and working OS2006 (on the MMC) and the previous OS2007 on the internal flash. OS2006 also used all of Fanoush's kernel hacks for faster transfer, dual boot, etc.

Then I installed OS2007HE on the internal flash, which removed the dual boot.

Now I want to get dual booting working again. I figure my OS2006 will still be on the MMC and want access to it again.

I still had initfs_flasher still on the MMC card, so simply reran initfs_flash as root. But now I get a long list of permission denied errors.

Do I need an updated initfs_flasher to use with OS2007HE? Something else I'm doing wrong? I used xterm and sudo gainroot to become root so I think's that's valid.

If you copy it to internal flash I believe it'll work. I don't think you can execute things from MMC.

Yup, that works. I'm reversing to OS2006 while all the chatter moves to the N810. My OS2006 is setup the way I like and is very stable.

Well, I can do nothing about the permison denied message. You simply cannot run anything from card by default. I guess at least I can implement check for those who (for some mysterious reason) disable 'noexec' flag on FAT formatted MMC cards or run it via sh. I will also add it to README for those who bother to read it. Also empty file called DO_NOT_RUN_ME_FROM_MMC may be a good idea and could warn people when they extract the archive.

There is no way initfs_flasher will run correctly from FAT formatted card even if you disable the default 'noexec' mount flag. It needs proper unix filesystem for many reasons.

I've searched for this and haven't found and answer. My 770 is working pretty stable on 2007 with stock kernel (fastMMC made it reboot frequently), have the frequent 'desktop' crash were the desktop restarts with no applets running but that happens only when taxing the machine. The problem is when I connect the charger. In anywhere from 15 minutes to an hour at most, the unit reboots.
Is anyone else experiencing the same? Or should I just install from scratch and hope it won't happen again? I boot 2007 from the MMC card and keep 2006 on the internal flash. When booting 2006 I have no issue when charging.

While the memory corruption bug exists, all bets are off - is your device more stable with WiFi disconnected?

Wifi is always off in my case while charging, so I think the issue must be somewhere else, I'll reinstall everything from scratch and see what happens, just wanted to know if someone else had this problem.

A new version of the Internet Tablet OS 2007 Hacker Edition for the Nokia 770 is now available for download. There are two improvements in this released compared to the previous one:

The Mozilla browser engine developed by Nokia is now available in addition to the Opera engine.
A critical bug causing memory corruption under certain wlan conditions has been fixed.
Both improvements carry a remarkable degree of user contributions, big thank you!

The development to bring the Hacker Edition to Chinook levels is ongoing. It's not being easy to make the OS2008 fit in the 770 hardware. We are keeping the plan to offer you a new HE release though, hopefully before the end of the year.

Remember: the OS2007 Hacker Edition is not an end-user ready release and it is not officially supported by Nokia.

I tried and failed. I first had to install Wget. I then ran the wget command line Ok and downloaded Flash 9. When I ran the second line beginning with tar, I got permission denied? It's the weekend...maybe it will work on Monday? When I go back and try it again Monday, do I just gainroot and only enter the wget line again??

Were you the root user when you ran the tar command? On Monday, just execute "sudo gainroot" then, in the same directory as the compressed archive you downloaded previously, execute the tar command.

I entered "sudo gainroot" first as per your instruction. I was root...I thought I read one of your other posts that said you would get "permission denied" error if you put tar file on the memory card?
