Yeah, that's a good point. If I ever get to that point of understanding, I'll surely do that. The wiki is already lengthy, but I think with a good table of content, it would be easy to navigate a good deal more information that I could surely have used instead of spending the past several hours messing around with the setup.

OTOH, do you think it's off-base to create a new thread just to ask my question? (I would like to get some help and clarity before I go around making new wiki pages, especially since I'm inexperienced in the wiki and just registered now.)

This easy-debian thread is particularly high in traffic, and I'm afraid my questions are going to be lost in the flurry.

What does it mean that the keyboard works well yet you cannot type Russian? Can you explain more precisely what the problem is?

And what did you do exactly in configuring Easy Debian? Did you follow all the relevant instructions in the wiki?

It means "generic" maemo keyboard layout switcher does not work in Easydebian, thus making national layout inaccessible.

All done on the instructions in the wiki.
Keyboard "Fn" + Up, Down, $, etc. work correctly.
LXDE, OOo entirely in russian. Made dpkg-reconfigure locales.
But applications can enter text only in English.
I can not switch to russian, to write.

I wonder what's the crucial difference to German, Italian, Spanish, Norwegian, Danish, or Polish, where localization seems to work. How is it on the Maemo side, when you just have booted. Is the keyboard then already Russian, or only after you switch language? Do you do that by Ctrl+Space perhaps? That might get disabled by using xbindkeys unless you remove the corresponding entry from /home/user/.xbindkeysrc.

Xbindkes staged in autostart. Remove from xbindkeys switching ctrl + space.
The terminal can write in Russian. In LXDE can not.

So can you write Russian when you start GUI applications such as openoffice through debbie instead of LXDE? That's not too bad then!

Do you have to switch to Russian by Ctrl+Space initially? If so, perhaps it helps to open XTerminal, type "debbie-sue", switch to Russian, and then type "debwm".

In the Debian Chroot I write in russian.
If you run OOo, without running LXDE, it is only in English.
In LXDE only in English.
Ctrl + Space toggles language only in Debian chroot.
Maybe in .xbindkeysrc:

"Wmctrl-r: ACTIVE:-b toggle, fullscreen"
m: 0x4 + c: 65
Control + space

instead of "fullscreen" to write something else?

I can answer this one!

The short answer, unfortunately, is "no".

It is technically possible to mount the Maemo file system in the Debian file system, like a weird set of nesting dolls where the outside doll is also inside the inner doll, but that's pretty advanced stuff, and I don't recommend it. But maybe if you're savvy with the mount command, you could give it a try and report back...

I can't answer the questions about Russian keyboards. :(

I would anyhow suggest to replace the above entry in .xbindkeysrc by
Code:

"wmctrl -r :ACTIVE: -b toggle,fullscreen"
  Shift+Mod5 + space

so that for full screen you have to press Shift+Fn+Space, thus preserving the standard Control+Space for language switches.

But since OO outside of LXDE is also only in English for you, this is probably not the issue. I suspect you need to install Russian localization for OO. For this you should first upgrade OO to the version in squeeze as described in the wiki and then additionally do
Code:

apt-get install openoffice.org-l10n-ru

Hey guys,
Dunno where to ask this question which I have been waiting to ask since sum time now.

I have had a hard time trying to set the MIME type.
Ex. I installed a bit torrent client and in the desktop icon, i specified the MimeType = application/torrent;application/xbittorrent.
But still when I reboot my phone, It doesnt associate torrent files with the torrent client.

Am I doing something wrong?

Thanks

Hi, I had easy debian installed and had the .ext2 of 2GB but after I uninstalled easy debian and deleted that 2GB .ext2 file, my available memory in MyDocs is still the same. To be more specific, conky was showing 13.17GB available when I had easy debian installed and after the removal of easy debian it still shows the same availability. Any suggestions? Thanks

Did you install it in MyDocs or on the memory card?
Is the file deleted?
What does df -h say?

It was installed in MyDocs and I deleted the file from File Manager and it no longer exist coz I don't see it anymore :) and df -h says the same thing

Is it still mounted though?

Reboot and see if the space has been unallocated. You can delete the file but whilst something (eg the loop mount code) has the inode open, the inode stay allocated.

You can also install "Storage Usage" to easily see what is taking the most space on your system.

I again restarted my device but no changes. mount doesn't tell anything about it or its me who couldn't figure out as I'm not sure what exactly it would be like coz whatever it prints seems they belong there. df -h tells that I have 12.8G used and 14.2G free in MyDocs, however, DiskUsage tells me that 10.2G is used and same 14.2G free in MyDocs out of 27.0GB.

Thanks qole I think I'm very close to getting it back as now diskusage also says that I have 12.5G used and fsck.vfat -fy has created 45 files from FSCK001 - 45 with total of almost 3G in MyDocs, can I safely delete them?

Re: Easy Debian Fremantle Beta Testing

jaeezzy: I think it is safe to delete those files. The generic names mean that they are blocks of unknown data. I think we can safely assume that they're actually the remnants of the "deleted" image file (and other deleted files).

Re: Easy Debian Fremantle Beta Testing

Hi there everybody.

I hope I'm posting this in the right place. I installed the easy-debain
app and ran the image installed. The xtrem opened and downloaded the 300MB
file. Then extracted it, 1/2 way though it failed with a error I missed.
Then I noticed my /home is 100% full. I can not find the original file,
something .ext.deb or something that is suppose to extract to the 2gb space
needed. I did an "du" on the /home and saw that the "." is 302MB, but I can
not fine anything to delete there?.

I uninstalled 1 or 2 appes, but it did not clear much space.

Can someone please, please assist? Where is that dam big file?
Thanks very much!

I was told about this post here:

Easy Debian installs in /home/user/MyDocs. Open XTerminal and do
Code:

ls -l MyDocs/*ext2*

"dpkg-reconfigure locales" didn't work for me with the karmic image.
But i changed LANG in /etc/environment and used "localedef -i de_DE -f UTF-8 de_DE" to get rid of the language related warning.

Unfortunately debwm/qobi-wmhint-fix give me: Xephyr cannot open host display. Is DISPLAY set? xephfocus/set-focus is working, but i'm loosing focus when i switch to Maemo. Any suggestions how to fix?

Hi there.

I figured it out. When I installed the image I was in USB Mass storage mode and it did install it in the MyDocs folder, but when I unplugged the USB cable it went back to normal "Phone mode" and did not display the image files that was downloaded there. When I tryed the ls command in MyDocs while I was in USB mass storage mode it showed the 2 files again. I removed both image debain* files and now my /home is back to 50% again. Who would have thought!

Thanks for all the help. You guys rock!! No really.. You guys are awesome. I'm glad to be part of this amazing community!

I've noticed that now squeeze also has OpenOffice 3.2.1-4 which avidscavenger had problems with.

After making a backup of my current image, I've tested this version by upgrading with
Code:

apt-get update
apt-get install openoffice.org-writer openoffice.org-impress openoffice.org-calc openoffice.org-math openoffice.org-style-crystal openoffice.org-style-galaxy openoffice.org-style-hicontrast openoffice.org-style-tango openoffice.org-emailmerge python-uno
apt-get clean

In contrast to the previous version, I had to explicitly include python-uno in the above list, otherwise the upgrade would be incomplete and moreover Gimp would get de-installed. With it, Gimp gets upgraded from 2.6.7 to 2.6.10.

So far I found no problems with the newer version. Both OO and Gimp look fine, and I can read avidscavenger's file without any issues. :D

Hello,

What is the command to enable squeeze? I couldnt get it enabled using the wiki. Also, do I use the debian xterm or the maemo xterm to enable squeeze and update OO and Gimp. I know these may be questions with obvious answers to some but I need help with updating and your successful update has encouraged me to try again.

Thank you.

In the Debian chroot terminal (red swirl icon) open the file /etc/apt/sources.list with an editor of your choice, e.g.
Code:

leafpad /etc/apt/sources.list
and then uncomment the line
Code:

#deb http://http.us.debian.org/debian squeeze main contrib non-free
i.e., remove the "#".

Re: Easy Debian Fremantle Beta Testing

Hi All;

I'm not sure whether or not this has yet been covered (I searched the thread and came up empty) but after the PR1.2 update, the fn key seems to function as another enter key under LXDE, which makes it rather difficult to type in numbers. This is an issue seeing as I can no longer type in IP-addresses in applications such as wireshark and zenmap.

I'm currently running from a ext2 partition on my memory card, and have changed nothing since before PR1.2

Any ideas?

Re: Easy Debian Fremantle Beta Testing

I've found a sure-fire way to make my N900 crash using Easy-Debian. I'll look in greater detail if noone replies but thought I'd write about it first in case it's immediately obvious to someone else is what the problem is.

The thing I'm doing that's a bit unusual is that I'm mounting a LUKS-encrypted ext2 partition on my micro-SDHC card. This is important to me as I want to carry data with me that, for contractual reasons as well as common sense, needs to be encrypted. If I don't mount this partition then I don't get the crash. I haven't tried non-encrypted or other filesystems to see if that helps to isolate the problem.

OK, so on a freshly booted N900, running from a shell over ssh, I do the following to mount my partition:

$ cryptsetup luksOpen /dev/mmcblk1 mmc1
$ mount -t ext2 /dev/mapper/mmc1 /media/mmc1

then

$ debbie
Starting Debian shell...
Chroot dir specified: /.debian
No image file or partition specified.
ls: /media/mmc1/debian*.img*: No such file or directory
Mounting...
using image file: /home/user/MyDocs/debian-m5-v3d.img.ext2
fs type is ext2
Using ext2 file system
mounting /home/user/MyDocs/debian-m5-v3d.img.ext2 on the turbo-loop ;)
.../home/user/MyDocs/debian-m5-v3d.img.ext2 mounted on loop1
.
..
...
....
Updating the /etc/mtab file...
Everything set up, running chroot...
[user@chroot: /]exit
exit

So far so good. Now I attempt to close the debian turbo-loop:

$ sudo closechroot
Closing the chroot...
...closing chroot apps...
Terminated

And my N900 bites the dust....... Any ideas?
