Here in Oulu it's raining like we're... well, in Oulu. So what better time to go for a walk with Jolla. I'm impressed of how well the touchscreen works in the rain. A couple of drops made my previous phone unusable and wiping didn't help much. With Jolla there's no problem and gestures work perfectly. I'm sure the phone will have permanent water damage before touchscreen problems. Next stop... sauna!

Some said their Jolla is running hot. I guess it's relative since compared to my Motorola Milestone or even ZTE Blade, the Jolla is like a brick of ice.

I've been watching some clips with the Gallery video player. Unlike the audio player, it doesn't continue to play in background. MP4 files work well (I love the Finlandia nature film). I tested one MKV file which played ok but I couldn't use the time slider. An FLV file was recognized as audio file only.

Audio player supports lossless FLAC so I'll have no problems filling up my microSD card. I formatted the card using SD Formatter 4.0 on a laptop.

I had audio badly out of sync with the YouTube app. With Android web browsers not so much, but still noticeable. I'm going to test more media players for my great headphone review...

My previous phone was Xperia Z and yeah, Jolla is like a brick of ice compared to that :D

I only had minor out of sync at some point and later on the video pretty much no out of sync, seemed kinda random.

Shame that Chrome won't work...well, it starts and seems daaamn smooth but wont load any pages :( I don't know if it works with all the google stuff installed but I only sideloaded the APK's of chrome and other apps.

Just how small are some of you guys hands? I keep hearing how the phone is borderline too big. By all dimensions, this phone would be dwarfed in my hands. The N9 was far too small, I had to be far too accurate on that small of a screen.

Is anyone using the first one ambience? My ringtone changed when i switched to it even though it still shows up as the default ringtone in the settings. The ringtone I have now is one of the most joyful songs I've ever heard and I absolutely love it. You all should try it. :)

@gerbick: Actually I think the phone should be bigger. It is a bit too thin and too light to be used comfortably. I was thinking of adding some of the smaller rim weights inside the other half to fix the lightness issue. :p

As far as I am concerned the phone can be smaller or bigger. There is an advantage to any form factor.

The industrial design shows a typical cost saving form factor built around a screen showing little intrest in matching human anatomy and providing comfortable ergonomics.

For this and of course for the added complementary features I am thinking of adding my slightly rounded 808 to the back of the Jolla as the other half. :D

@gerbick: for reference my hand measures 21 cm from base of palm to top of ring finger.

Ambience is profile. It changes the visuals and sound tones so it is a feature what you are experiencing :) From Settings app you can change the default sound tones and ambiences can override those defaults.

I tried Aldiko Android eReader. It installed but I couldn't open any books from UI, even the example book coming with Aldiko. Tapping books only highlighted the cover for a fraction of the second. Long tap activated multiselection.

So I removed Aldiko and installed FBReader for Android. At least it opens ebooks.

I haven't tried but I have understood that you can only edit ambiences that you create yourself, at least through UI. You probably can go under the hood with Terminal app and edit ambiance configuration files.

If I understood correctly your question: You can uninstall Android apps in three different ways:
  • From Android store you used to install it. Select "my apps" or similar and uninstall from there. I have successfully uninstalled apps with Yandex.Store and Amazon appstore.
  • From launcher: long press any app and then tap the X on the app you want to uninstall.
  • From Terminal app. First locate installation directory and then use rm -r DIR to delete the app directory and its contents. Be careful.

I hope somebody can throw in a technical explanation to prove the contrary and show us that Sailfish is not a data grabbing playground for Android applications on the loose.

My question: is there a mechanism there to protect the data from Sailfish apps?

I mean, if I can write a simple Flashligh app that grabs your emails, smses and contacts and sends it to me, would you notice? Could you limit your apps some way, like in Android (especially like PrivacyGuard in Cyanogenmod)?

For all those Mac owners having difficulty in transferring files it may be good to know that a Sailfish Dropbox client has appeared in the Jolla store. It works well but is sadly lacking a thumbnail view of pictures at the moment.

Great to see some Sailfish OS apps arriving through.

I've got another tricky thing to test, aimed for all former/current N9 users.
If you have/had an N9, and used the email application, preferably with a custom IMAP4+SMTP server, preferably with dovecot as the IMAP4 server, have you noticed that email sync stops working every now and then and you have to delete the database in ~/.qmf/ to resolve it ? If so, this post is for you.

Did you manage to replicate the same issue in the Jolla? :-)

Has anyone done a good camera comparison test vs. some flagship phones like ip5 or sgs4 and such? I know it isnt maybe fair to test 400e phone against +600e phones but still would like some. I only have done some small testing against Xperia Z and there it is really not that huge dirrefence...Xperia Z's camera was a disaapointment tho and I find it pretty sucky afterall, atleast with default settings.

There is normal unix security to protect the data.

Sailfish protected data are in privileged group, and normal android applications don't have access to that group, as android apps run as randomuid:nemo-group. So they only have readonly access to nemo users dirs (if group has +r). If you make sailfish application, and chmod g-r on the file, then android application cannot read it.

But yes between sailfish applications both are running as nemo, there is no read access restrictions, but ofcourse you can encrypt your sailfish applications data files. And even normal nemo user sailfish applications cannot access the data from Jolla applications privileged group dirs (like facebook contacts etc are protected).

Not that I've seen but I've started taking some shots. The camera isn't bad at all, it is pretty good in normal light, colour balance is good and its macro works. My attempts to take pictures on a gloomy day were almost all exposed wrongly and its performance in the dark is what you would expect

If you would like to see some of the pictures they are in my flickr feed currently the first 7 pictures are all ones taken with the jolla

With the help of a friend who writes qt programs, i've been trying to install the Tweetian beta. Unfortunately my friend is currently in Sydney which is a hindrance since I'm in the Uk. We have installed the qt dependencies need, but keep hitting the rpm.lock, and that won't delete either

Any ideas? what is the default password for su?

I think its a marvellous effort. I just know my way around the android app. The android app for example lets me one-touch install an apk - I tap on it and it installs. Sailbox requires firstly a transfer into the transfer box and on downloading seems to do nothing with the same file, until I spent some time, I didn't know where it had gone (entirely my fault I recognise)

That sounds like huge criticism and please don't think it is. Probably its been too long since I played with harmattan for real and so I'm looking at it all wrong. I have no background in programming *at all* and I can tell it has had a lot of love to get that far, I just think with what looks to me as a small bit of tweaking it could be so much better so please take this is constructive criticism - I'm very happy to help as much as I can

My alarm clock woes continue

The alarm is set to go off each day at 6:44 (OK it says 7:44 but we have covered that)

On screen it shows me 07:44 under which there are 5 illuminated lines, then a gap then 2 dark lines (sorry not got chance to screenshot and in a hurry)

Yesterday and today the alarm hasn't gone off at all - it is definitely supposed to go off every day - can you feed that one back too?

This. Thanks for beating me to the punch.

I get no iPhoto support - in fact, I welcome the lack of support for that application.

But as it stands, it seems as if you cannot use the Jolla phone for mass storage nor transferring unless you (perhaps) mount via terminal and/or sftp/scp over anything to it. And I say perhaps because it's not been confirmed as fully working in this thread.

when you create google account on device, there is sync option on there, it syncs contacts from server side to device. Currently there is only one way sync, hopefully in future it syncs both ways.

And hackish alternative way with developermode, you can export all contacs as one big vcf from google mail, and you can run as nemo "invoker --type=generic vcardconverter bigfile.vcf" which will import all the contacts into the device.

Jolla phone doesn't show up in Finder on OSX for me. I haven't yet tried to solve the issue with terminal.

But Im running a triple booting hackintosh machine (OSX, Win8, Linux). Could be somekind of quirk caused by not running an official Apple machine, altough all other mass storage USB devices work no problem in OSX for me.

I truly doubt that's the problem. Even most Hackintosh's have no problem mounting even the most difficult of things - trust me, even though I run authentic Apple devices, I've built quite a few for others and they all worked with whatever I threw at them.

Even my N9. This is something different it seems.

Again. Atm we do not support mass storage. Only MTP. This is due to a huge number of technical issues with mass storage that are not easy to deal with/solve. Even android dropped mass-storage in favour of MTP.

OS X does support rndis with the horndis driver an then you can transfer files over sshfs/scp/sftp

And this was not a question of not supporting OS X, this is rather OS X being broken. Afaik one of the only working mtp transfer programs (android file transfer) also got recently broken by Apple. So in short it is rather Apple making support impossible.

However as stated some kind of mass-storage support might come. Exporting the SD-card or a virtual fs on the device.

Note: The device might sometimes claim to be an EMPTY mass-storage device. This is a trick to make sure it charges correctly if no enumeration happens otherwise. This happens when you select charging only, or do not make a choice when the USB selection menu pops up.
