Re: Are you Ready? F(x)tec Pro 1 HW Keyboard Phone
I gotta say though, after using the N900 for more than 8 years the Pro1 keyboard feels.. weird so far. Then again it was only a hands-on event, at the end of this year it'll be second nature to use it.

For example I was fine with the zuarus 5500 until I used the n900 (I also almost got the 810). So most like the n900 keyboard will feel cramped and strange after some time with the pro1. Personally, I'm most concerned with the size of the device and how pocketable it is and how likely it would get damaged from carrying it like my n900. I NEVER worried about my n900 ... well until I plug it into the usb port these days :D. anyway share if you got more opinions, if not no worries. x |

Wondering if anyone received a positive answer regarding the beta testing phase yet? I guess there will be a NDA, but probably not about just mentioning who participates in the beta test.

I think it depends of the NDA, if it's written then can't say they are beta-tester or not. But I think when all the selected people will have been contacted (not sure about the grammar here :|), we will have some news from Chen about that.

Re: Are you Ready? F(x)tec Pro 1 HW Keyboard Phone
Both types of NDA exist as far as I know. What you're saying is true Catbus, but on the other hand F(x)tec could also see the beta test phase as a way to kill two birds with one stone: getting feedback from beta testers about NDA stuff, while letting them show non critical pictures or situations to get some extra coverage in social media and slowly let the hype escalate.
For instance, it seems that people who attended the event in Germany were invited to mention the Pro1 to friends on social media, in exchange of getting their device a few days before release. No idea what is best, I'm just curious. |

Re: Are you Ready? F(x)tec Pro 1 HW Keyboard Phone
Mentioning a few interesting informations from the posted video (most are already known, I still repeat it here):
- While watching the slide out process I got an idea now, why it could have a curved screen: It might be more comfortable to slide out the keyboard with a curved screen. It looks like it might even hurt a bit if the edges are "too sharp". Maybe someone could confirm this? - The main camera is 12 MP Sony and a second one with 5 MP. The cameras do not pop out of a case. So it is nicely lying on a table. You can see a short sequence of typing on the table at 3min 13sec with two fingers. - If you do not need a second SIM you can install memory up to 2 TB. - Stereo Speakers. - Camera shutter button. - RGB notification LED (I have no idea what I could use this for at the moment). - 10 hours talk time, 20 days standby time - Android 9 Pie installed, upgrade to Q is planned as soon as available. - Unlocking the bootloader will not void warranty. - What I can see on the video: It looks like the keys are sticking out more than in the pictures from the versions last year, so I hope it's possible to actually type faster and maybe with more fingers than seen on the videos so far until now. - Target audience are techies with a love for customization - Easy to repair: Screen can be changed by opening screws, same with the battery. USB charging connection is on a separate PCB, so this could be changed also easily if it breaks in a few years (!) - Next week the company will ask for the money transfer. Shipping from UK will start in the beginning of september. |
Re: Are you Ready? F(x)tec Pro 1 HW Keyboard Phone
Did anyone ever try to do a phone call on this device actually? There are rumours of bad call quality on gemini pda. It would be important for me to know that this device has good call quality, on both sides (caller and called person).

They really went to great lengths to underline how much this device is catered to the people. Any updates on warranties? Last I heard it was 2 years, but unsure if that applies to the US |

[edit] I dig more and warranty actually can be less than 2 years in EU but product liability insurance should be 2 years... I think. Maybe someone more qualified person could tell more... [/edit] |

Re: Are you Ready? F(x)tec Pro 1 HW Keyboard Phone
Is it possible (softwarewise) to put different functions to keys? For example, if I would like to change "up arrow" to be Ä, would that be possible? Or if I change device (Android) language to Finnish will it somehow affect HW keyboard functionality?
EDIT: in a Finnish IO-Tech.fi forum a developer (with experience about these type of things: https://android.onse.fi/finqwerty/ ) has said that he can add scandic layout support for the keyboard if "manufacturer has not prevented it". I would assume that f(x)tec people would not prevent this so hopefully scandic layout support should be possible. |

Re: Are you Ready? F(x)tec Pro 1 HW Keyboard Phone
Apologies if it was mentioned and I missed it, but any comment from anyone who been hands-on on the weight of the Pro1?
I can't say I much care, unless it's got a depleted uranium core it won't be enough to put me off, but I recall the figure was TBD at the beginning and I haven't noticed anyone mention it recently. |

Re: Are you Ready? F(x)tec Pro 1 HW Keyboard Phone
I guess most members of this forum would be itching to install SFOS at the first opportunity (and maybe to feel vaguely icky about using an Android device ;) ) so we probably aren't in the main ideal candidates for beta testing.
Last thing Chen needs in the first beta testing group is a bunch of hackers who are predisposed to hate the OS :p |

Fact is, there are people on TMO that use Android (and you might even find some that want it ). Having it imposed at work is probably a big part of those that switched, though there may be people that are not tech-savvy enough to find/revive/use those devices or yore that we covet here on TMO (after my N900s died on me, I had to resort to buying a BlackBerry... with BBOS, mind you... no full-fledged Android for me, no sir !) You can't also dismiss the fact that nowadays people are very partial to social networks and the whole there's-an-app-for-everything lunacy, and those are harder (if at all possible) to achieve on our cherished devices of the golden age, while it's the bread-and-butter of Android and iOS. Lastly, I'd surmise people just want to get their grubby hands on the Pro1 ASAP, OS notwithstanding  |
Re: Are you Ready? F(x)tec Pro 1 HW Keyboard Phone

I don't disagree with the facts as you state them at all, I was just pointing out why being a TMO member might not make one more likely to be selected in the beta group, perhaps even the opposite. If you're beta testing for obscure bugs in your main OS, then don't select users who are likely to be (a) more interested in some other OS, and (b) preconditioned to not be bothered by minor bugs in apps (because they are entirely used to nothing being quite ready for the big time). And as for your last point, well, I will have to plead guilty as charged :o |
