Re: N900 shipping delayed

Just found this on a seperate forum

http://www.nokiausers.net/forum/noki...athrow-t5.html

Summary below, I will update you when I have been down to the Regent St store next week and tried it for myself

I've also just come back from the Regent Street flagship store. Only one demo N900, in the hands of one of the employees there, who watched me like a hawk in case I drop it or break it in some way. I was never a big fan of the N900, just not the right type of phone for me, and what I saw did not change my opinion at all. Too big for me and at the same time surprisingly light and flimsy to the touch for its size - I personally did not get the feel of solid quality build, especially with the screen covered in prints, which I had difficulties getting rid of even after extensive efforts to rub them off with the sleeve of my fleece. The impression I am left with is of a grubby plasticky cheap feeling handset which I could hardly wait to hand back to the anxious sales rep. An hour later I met up with a friend who has an Omnia HD - completely different class with regard to the visual and tactile aspect when handling it. After handing back the N900 I went off to have another look at the E75 - it was like night and day, why can't they give the N-series the same feel of quality like the E-series ?! I have to say that for my next phone I will not be quitting Nokia, but I will be giving up on the N-series. Sod the large touchscreen if it feels and acts no better than the 15-pound throwaway Samsung I have for lending out to visiting friends and family from abroad.

I specifically asked whether the unit is with the final release version of the firmware and they said yes. Well, sorry guys, but it didn't feel any faster going through the menus than my 5800. There was even the embarassing moment of waiting for a game (I think Bounce) to launch for so long that the screensaver kicked in and the display went dark. I didn't really fiddle that much with it, since I was never too interested in it in the first place, plus my first impressions were not very positive either (in case you didn't get that so far - ) so I'll leave that to Micky and others who will have the actual phones in hand - soon I hope.

What might be of interest to the forum members is that apparently the N900 will be exclusively available only the flagship stores in conjunction with Mobile Phones Direct for at least two months after release (which I was told would be "any day this month") - no handsets will be offered neither direct by networks nor by other merchants like CPW or P4U. So whatever contracts will be offered by MPD, that will be it until some time in January 2010. There was even a MPD rep in store, who confirmed that.

"Time will tell.".. well it has been months now, and time hasn't told anything.

Maybe they should put that on the nokia shop "time will tell" instead of End of November.

What has nokia become? a fraud company? not a single word from them for so long makes you wonder wth is going on? You either tell us when you release the goddamn thing, so we can go on and check other options. BS if you ask me.

In the end you will have the better device :D Thats all you can ask for ;) It might be 2012, but hey... maybe Nokia will give a free cookie with it... Then you will have the better device, AND a cookie!

But seriously... Lets wait till tomorrow...

It's not Nokia UK, it's the company that is out sourced to deal with the website for Nokia UK.
That said it is the most likely to be accurate, well we shall see very soon....

I registered cos i was told to by someones post!

i cant wait to order my n900, had it pre-ordered from MPD - 18 month contract £30 a month from t-mobile. but cancelled it once i found out about the fair usage limits.

got a couple of questions:

1.Is 1gb much for an internet phone? is there a good chance i'll hit this? (im a internet whore)

2. If the only thing im interested in is cheap, web access whats the best plan? contract or PAYAYG? I dont mind tying myself into a contract if it means cheaper bills

N900 is gonna rock.

I will probably be making some programs (Im not calling them apps!) for meamo 5, looking forward to mounting my network shares and running an SSH server from my phone!

As I have mentioned earlier T-Mobile's fair usage policy barely exists. You could easily do 2GB a month for your whole contract without them caring.

I used to break the limit constantly with my G1. I tethered 3 computers via wifi for a few weekends at a friends (no landline.) A few played WoW whilst I played Trackmania, all through my G1.

I even downloaded the beta of Windows 7 (4 GB) through my MSDN account.

Whilst pure data sims don't have terms & conditions regarding Skype & Tethering, they are expensive (£15 for 3-5GB.)

Re: N900 shipping delayed

Well, I'm hoping for good news tomorrow, but now I'm sat here in a desert, surrounded by camels, and hoping that my device ships to my home in the UK from Nokia UK.
Had a chance to cop a feel of the wee beastie in the Nokia store at Heathrow earlier. Having not had any sleep, I wasn't on full geek form, but my impression was one of being underwhelmed, it seemed smaller than expected (too much like a phone) and lacked a robust feel.
I'm hoping that these feelings go away when my own one turns up. I trust the code, but still have reservations over the form factor and the compromises that have brought us from the nits to this.
Happy Monday.
fnord.

Re: N900 shipping delayed

So when exactly tomorrow are those who pre-ordered from Nokia gonna know whether it's shipped or not? 6? 7? 8? Basically, I want to know when this thread is going to go bananas one way or another ;)

(I've preordered through MPD, so I'm assuming mine won't be coming for another week or so..but knowing that retail devices are out there will certainly be encouraging)

noobmonkey 2009-11-08 22:24

Re: N900 shipping delayed

i'd assume anytime after 9 - staff have to get in.... set things in motion, then start from the first pre orders?
So payments may not start going out till well gone 9am?

Hmmm I ordered from Mobilephonesdirect - so i'm assuming mines not coming till next week :( at the earliest.... :(

thanks, some good advice. Does everyone else agree that if a user is only concerned with web access t-mobile are the way to go?

also T-mobile do a £1 a day max thing with some of there sims, can anyone elaborate on this?

also does anyone know where i can get a t-mobile contract from? the MPD site has dropped all t-mobile deals!
