I went in - and they told me tomorrow/the next day. They really dont know do they!

It's not so much the wait that's the problem as it s the being told things that aren't true.

The Nokia UK staff being quoted are actually MPD staff who are not Nokia, they just run the shops for them. I do however agree that they ought not to be making stuff up but they are salesmen so I think that would be asking the impossible!

The Nokia N900 is now available to US consumers

Finally! I just hope everybody will be relaxed from now on :)
Even that I'm not in US, I'm happy that this will be finally over.

ShopBLT was saying 18/11 from beginning ... well, they were right.

The German Nokia page updated some information about the N900. They are showing off that it is superfast and open source and ready for - guess what - preorder ;)

Shop still says 25th November, but they're making some sort of: "There IS something more coming at the 24th November". Maybe the N920 for preorder? Really don't know...

I think there will be more Android phones by the end of this year than Maemo5 powered devices. A few manufactures have announced they want bring a Android phone to the market but Nokia is the only one who's into Maemo.

Yeah, that's the point... I will most likely buy a N900 because of its Linux and GTK/QT but I think I'll wait till both devices are available and check them both.

This whole "shipping from the factory" is a bunch of crap. I don't care when it ships from the factory. I care when I can give them payment and receive the product in return.

Android is more like a base. I used a HTC G1 for at least 5 months. The new version won't run on the G1, some apps don't run correctly on the G1 cause of it's keyboard and I can continue these problems.
I can't remember any good Series60 phone from an other company as Nokia.
Siemens made something "strange" with its SX1 and well... don't know. When Google will release his own Google Phone Android will run the same way as Series60. The real good ones will come from Google, cause they create the OS for THEIR phones, not for the rest...

Yes that's part of the problem for Android - when you go to the marketplace on your Android device and install an application you're no longer sure the developer tested it on your device.

You can expect Android application compatibility to degrade in 2010. I haven't yet seen any indication Google have their eye on the ball with regard to this problem.

It's out for preorder. What did you thought?! :D

Nokia is creating a new way of running business.
Instead of customers that buy now, and never pay, we now have customers paying now and never get.

That's a great way of making money!

Economics will remember this day for long!

Well Im guessing the idea behind that is so that:

A: Consumers have a definite fixed date to base their purchasing decisions around

B: The manufacturer dont get a constant stream of irate calls to their customer services

C: They seem professional and in control of the deployment of their own product.

So for those reasons, would you not agree that Nokia have been a bit silly, to say the least?

Anyway. I bought a N86 yesterday for the wife. I´ll be content for a while now.

that means ... on their tour to the retailers they drove nearby Area 51 .. but suddenly the aliens came back stole the device and now we all have to wait for the next bunch :D :D :D

Dvorak is infamous for writing inflammatory trollish articles to pump his reader stats

http://apple.slashdot.org/apple/06/06/10/1529257.shtml

"Tech pundit John Dvorak has long been known for his inflammatory opinions. Many have suspected that these opinions are just a way to drive up traffic to his column. Now, we have it straight from the horse's mouth: Dave Winer has Dvorak on video describing his methodology for trolling the Mac community to pump up his stats."

don't forget that before this announcement, lots of people were begging for "any info". Nokia gave us the info. I consider this a very positve thing -- they kept us informed, and i appreciated that.

Any 'big' launch happens this way. iPhones, Wii, PS3 , XBox etc.etc - They were all in many shop store-rooms days before 'launch'. I never said that there's always enough stock at each store to meet demand, however ;)

I called the New York flagship yesterday and was "encouraged" by the smug woman on the phone to put my name on a call-list. As she explained it they already had over 200 names on their list and weren't even receiving that many phones. Although supposedly she couldn't give me any info about them getting the phones other than it'd be before Thanksgiving, but ballparking stock status is OK to try and get me to go on their call-list). I declined this opportunity rather than bothering to explain how *****ic the whole situation and idea of pre-ordering was, especially since she just said they wouldn't even be getting 200 phones.

The thing that irks me is there often (usually I would bet) is plenty of stock, whether its being held back by the manufacturer or by the stores.
