My first day's experience:

I check some Google Reader, do some SMSing, and by the time I get to work it's down at least a tick on the battery meter. By the time lunch rolls around, it's basically been online, maybe a snap or two, some showing off and checking e-mails set for every 15 minutes and it's already at 50% on the battery meter. So I plug it into the USB and get it charged by the end of the day of the commute home. I will have to try to see how long it really takes from 50% to 0% through the rest of the day.

Overall, I know it will take some tweaking. I've adjusted the email refresh to every 30 minutes during the day since I'm at work anyway, brightness to 3 with power saving turned on, and turned off the WiFi. We shall see. It's been off the hook (pardon the pun) since 6:30a and I'm on one tick down from the top and that's with little browsing, IM/Skype on and a few SMSes. That's not terrible for 4 hours on this wee beastie.

I love this device! Seriously do. If they come out with a higher-capacity battery I might just get it as the main and keep this original as a spare. But I am sure more firmware tweakings will help this along. Still thrilled!

One thing you might want to try is to disable the phone to hunt for 3G. I haven't tested the difference as I did it the 2nd day I got the phone.

Settings->Phone
mode: dual mode IS GREYED out. Cannot change this setting

I had to put in a tmobile SIM to be able to change this setting to GSM. And once you put back at&t SIM, this setting remains fixed to GSM.

I have no idea if it will make difference to battery (it should if n900 is constantly searching for 3G) but I doubt n900 is smart enough to not hunt for 3G if your network is not.

Please report if your battery improved with this method

FYI, you can change the network mode w/o changing sims, disconnect the internet connection first

I tried this in xterminal but it says not found. Anything else to add in there?

That's an "ls" as in lisa sam. Worked fine on mine out of the box.

Thanks, looked like an I on my N900 screen. Any other useful commands on xterminal without need for root. (stayin safe for now)

Is there a xterminal command guide anywhere online specific to n900 commands?

X terminal commands for the n900 are all in four directories. To get each list of commands, type in X terminal:
1. For general commands:
Code:

ls /usr/bin
2. Additional general commands needed before /usr
is available to system (don't worry about that):
Code:

ls /bin
3. Commands for super user, but might have general use:
Code:

ls /usr/sbin
4. super user commands needed before /usr mount:
Code:

ls /sbin
Just about every n900 terminal command is a standard unix command. For information about each of these commands, google is your friend.

Re: N900 battery life questions, issues, scenarios

Another rant regarding horrible battery life. Have had the N900 for over two weeks now. The battery just doesn't seem to last for more than half a day MAX. Tried almost everything that various people have suggested.
Am on AT&T network. So, switched the network selection to GSM only.
Did not connect to any internet (WiFi or AT&T) Rebooted prior to that.
3 phone calls (2-5 mins max)
Vibration : Off
Notification Lights: Off
Tap vibration: Off
Back light intensity: 2/5
Caller tune: Nokia ~ 50% volume
WiFi/Internet connection: Disabled
Bluetooth: Off
GPS: Disabled/OFF
All widgets turned off.
Only one desktop has any 4 shortcuts: Phone, contacts, Email, Ovi store (still not up for N900 -- but that's a different rant)
The other desktops -- blank.
The only thing I didn't do that was recommended was to change my SIM card (16months old). This SIM card works perfectly well with my N95 8GB and I get atleast a day and a half out of it.

Even after all of this; My phone complains of dying due to lack to charge after 6 hours. Spent ~$600; not using any apps (forget the ability to handle multiple apps);:mad::mad::mad::mad::mad:

Would welcome any kind of suggestions.

Thanks,
Sean.

You didn't mention if you
- installed ANY apps at all
- how you charged your phone (via the charger or using the usb cable)

I'm also just got the n900 and evaluating the battery life on at&t (no 3G).
-I haven't installed any apps,
-I charge using the charger
- display on lowest setting
- my SIM is also about 4 years old
- I have the same settings you except I do let it connect to at&t internet automatically, search 10 mins. No wifi ever
- only had it 4 days and because of xmas, I havent been on my usual daily routine to compare to E71. But looks like

9am - midnight => 20% battery left. 5 mins of calls, Nokia Messaging checking every 30 mins and 2 accounts in conversations. Connected to at&t internet (2G) the whole time. The screen is probably on 15 mins MAX the whole period.

I'm hoping it can be 30-40% at mid-night when I get back to my daily routine... I'll know next week

The only app that I've installed is ForecaWeather. I've used it a couple of times. But the stats that I've given are even when the app has been taken offline. The way you've described your usage, I would love to have that 20% remaining at the end of the day......that would be tremendously better than having to recharge the phone 2 sometimes 3 times a day.

Oh and I charge using the charger. The charging using the USB is taking awfully long.

The 2+ weeks of having the phone, I'm pretty sure I've gone through 30+ cycles of recharging the phone and still do not see any improvement in the battery life.

Hope you have better luck with yours.
