I think NOKIA's budget devices have a very limited future because of the dumping of Symbian, Meltemi and Qt. Putting the swipe interface on Series 40 has undoubtedly made the Ashas more desirable than previous incarnations but I don't see many people choosing a J2ME only device now.

Maybe you don't see it, but remember that we're still talking about a price advantage, and sales in markets where the even cheapest phones are considered very expensive.

In the west, budget phones have no appeal, I'll grant you that. But even in developing countries, most people despite the growing middle classes are still very poor.

There are phones that cost £30 without a contract. There won't be an android alternative to that for many winters yet.

The new Ashas are not going to be £30, they are going to be around £65 before taxes, that makes them at least £80 in the UK.

My daughter just bought a new Galaxy Europa for £40 from 3 and she paid them another £15 to get an unlock code.

I think you'll actually find budget smartphones are a significant percentage of sales in the west, according to Kantar Worldpanel most growth in European sales of WPx devices is down to the NOKIA 610 not the higher end devices.

When I Iook around my friends, family and work colleagues the ones that aren't really interested in smartphones have devices such as the Galaxy Europa, Galaxy Ace, Desire C, etc...

I was going to offer a purile comment to Specc and Lumiaman over the current stock about writing an app called iGloat but the fact is it just saddens me that a company with such a great past as Nokia has been reduced to begging for scraps.

Even if the spawn of Nokia/Microsoft/Oracle can compete and try to become the third ecosystem the best they can hope for is a small fraction of the iPhone market share and that closed ecosystem is already shrinking.

Too little too late and no innovation.

And then Microsoft Buys ORACLE ...

Loving this rumor about Microsoft planning to release their own WP8 phone. Is it just some institution shorting Nokia stock or a real plan? Either way, so nice that Nokia put all their eggs in the WP basket..

That was a huge mistake. Microsoft has never played well with their mobile strategic partners. They've undercut the other manufacturers for tablets with their Surface tablet and now it seems like they're going to undercut Nokia and even HTC with this upcoming rumored WP8 phone made by Microsoft.

That's the cost of doing business with Ballmer. He's going to screw you.

Well, you said budget phones, the Ashas aren't Nokias low end.

The Galaxy i5500 is, as far as the local pricewatch can tell me, a £80 phone, not a £40 phone. So, 3 has a low fee to break a contract - that's really not relevant to the actual price of the phone. That's compared to i.e. the Nokia 100, that goes for about £18 locally. Without having to sign a contract and breaking it.

But I see that there are cheaper android handsets than I thought.

Sorry, I should have said 'budget smart devices' for clarity but seeing as I was responding to your comment about the Ashas I thought it would be clear that's what I was referring to.

It's a PAYG phone so there is no contract. I think £15 is pretty much a standard charge across UK carriers for unlocking a carrier locked device, it's also what I paid O2 to unlock my iPhone. Is the UK market unusual in that regard?

Anyhow, China has a plentiful supply of < $99 Androids, also I've read > 45% of the Indian smartphone market is already served by indigenous brands like Micromax, Karbonn and Lava which offer Android handsets starting at around £45. NOKIA is going to face tough competition from Android devices in the markets they are targeting with the Ashas, I think leaving their budget 'smart' devices stuck in the mud with J2ME is not going to help them compete.

Re: Let's talk Nokia stock. Really.

Samsung has phones that cost as little as £9 here, but that's probably unsold stock. Many, many people in Asia and Africa would buy a £9 phone over a £39 phone. Lowest end is traditionally where Nokia's been the strongest. So it's real money for them. But as it is, Nokia's losing fast in the lowest end too.

Anyway, half way through the week, this is the status for NOK1V/HELSINKI:
