oh epage ;) You won't have to "maintain" a sip application. Once it is written, its done as SIP does not change (protocol). Just think of how well configured you could make it for google voice ;)

Just one comment "HA" :)

BTW I'm just checking in as I have not used TOR in a few releases. I always seem to have device instability when it is installed. Still using dialcentral and loving it :)

What kind of device instability? I've not seen any on my device.

presumably has something to do with my university connection. it requires me to be connected to wireless then to go to a web page and log in. When I connect to the wireless, telepathy attempts to log in and sometimes locks up my system.
I was also having duplicate and triple contacts that was a bit nerve racking.
Oh yea and my AIM was having issues logging in if I remember correctly. (I'll look back in the posts as I believe I mentioned it previously)

"sometimes locks up my system"? That sounds kind of bad and surprising that TOR would be at fault. Reporting of these things and providing log files is a big help so they actually get fixed rather than ignored.

From my recollection the duplicate and triple contact thing is from manually entering contacts which gets into Nokia land and I have little to no control over that (I think). I never fully knew what it would do and either hadn't recommended it from the beginning or until you and others ran into issues

Depending on what issues AIM was having, it would be an issue with that plugin that those authors would be much like to know exsts so they can invest in fixing it, like I've been doing and I believe Skype has too.

pgs 35, 36, and 39 have my problems commented. I noticed you have upgraded TOR since then so all may be well and good. the status of my AIM contacts was the last straw so to speak ;). I am willing to give tor another run if you can tell me how I can ensure all the previous installs/contacts of TOR can be deleted before I upgrade to the latest.

For TOR files, its just "~/.telepathy-theonering". For addressbook, good luck with that one. A script could possibly be made to do that.

Maybe next time you'll be a bit more careful of extras-devel and wait till its in Extras ;)

epage, have to say you've been doing awesome work, now that I finally have cellular data service I might not use it quite as much for the SMS side, but I will definitely use it for the Google Voice calling. Is there a setting to have it never check for SMS messages since I'll handle those with SMS messages from GV directly to the phone now instead of through the app?

And as far as reliability, I think TheOneRing is tops, though one kind of strange thing did happen, I use ActMan (the Desktop Activity Manager) which lets you set "activities" like Home/Car/Work and store different widgets/shortcuts/contacts/bookmarks on the desktop. When I switched between two profiles, the one I hadn't used for a couple days, then TheOneRing went out and (re)fetched all the old SMS messages I had received in those couple days. Is this simply Conversations doing that work because it doesn't cache the messages on disk to share between profiles or does TOR not have its own store of messages/timestamps it has retrieved?

I don't understand the use of this or dialcentral.

If it made VOIP calls, that'd be great, but both programs just inform google voice to call me right? In that case, it's still using my minutes :(

How does the texting functionality work? Does it text google voice who then texts the recipient?

If you setup a SIP account, then you would get free calls (starting a call from GV could then be directed to your SIP account). For example, you use to be able to setup a free SIP account at Gizmo before Google bought them.

The texting is like sending an IM. Texting from TOR is like going to the Google Voice website and sending it from there.

Ok, so texting is free, but why the need for a separate SIP account? You mean something like Skype, right? I heard using 2 VOIP providers together can introduce lag into the call.

Skype is a VOIP (though not SIP, SIP is a standard open protocol).

Why the need, because TOR has no built-in functionality for it. It's simply a way to initiate calls without going through the GV interface. Even DialCentral is just a specialized GV interface.

GV on other platforms is similar (Android for example). You still need a SIP account if you want to get free calls. Otherwise it uses Verizon minutes.
