I think the point is that what Nokia have done with the N810 is unnecessary and entirely avoidable - in fact, I'd suggest that if possible they change where they put the security sticker during manufacture, or change the sticker so that it isn't of the "security" variety and doesn't break apart of leave the silver foil behind when removed (Question: what "security" does the sticker provide anyway? It just had my WLAN MAC address printed on it)

If Nokia must use a security sticker and must put it on the screen, then consider enlarging the easily removed silver tab and place the security sticker on top of the tab.

It's not that we're cheapskates and don't want to buy a screen protector, but some of us clearly feel (and have physical proof) that the supplied shipping protector has a several month lifespan beyond shipment and this decision to make it immediately unusable is just head scratchingly stupid.

It's like someone had this conversation:

Nokian #1: "How can we really piss off the users [even more!] at no extra cost?"
Nokian #2: "I know, let's trash the screen protector with this silly sticker! Apparently some of them actually protect their screens with it."
Nokian #1: "Genius! Take a bonus next year."

Thanks for the suggestion but too late for me now! :(

If I'd thought of it sooner, I'd have tried removing the silver foil with white/methylated spirit, but I've no idea what that would do to the underlying plastic protector (probably would be OK, I guess).

Well, the good news is that they still have protectors, but the bad news is that they don't have any N810 ones yet. The N800 ones will give you better coverage, anyway.

On the one hand it is a joke, but then on the other hand it's not... maybe the shipping screen protector is only supposed to be used during shipping, but it's obvious that it can and is used by many 770/N800 users well beyond shipping which just shows a complete lack of understanding within Nokia of how their users actually use Nokia products. At least, that's how it appears to me.

Doesn't supplying the device with a screen protector imply that the screen is not robust enough to withstand normal use and so is somehow inferior to screens on similar products, e.g. iPhone, iPodTouch?

Would Nokia marketing department approve of that inference? Definitely not.

Also Nokia lawyers would insist on a security tab to permit safe removal of the shipping film. By puttinhg a tab on it there is no need to resort to the toolbox.

Imagine the warranty claims if customers damaged the screen while trying to pry the film off with a chisel? Or even, heaven forbid, damage themselves with the chisel while under the influence of Ronsonol - it is not used for what you think on this side of the lake.

i peeled the 'shipping' film off my 770 the day i got it, and i haven't used the slip on plastic cover either, except for a very short time after i got it. i peeled the plastic film off the screen of the 800 the day i got it and never used the silly pouch that came with it. i use the two devices every day, usually carrying them around in a pocket. i try to use the uncomfortable styli on them, but sometimes they go missing for a day a two and i have to use a pencil or a ball point pen, or, when a pencil is too far to reach, the end of one of my small philips (cross) head screwdrivers.

neither screen has the least scratch or scar on it.
