Thanks PB. KDE Konquer... looks, feels, and functions wonderful. Thanks to a few great developers like you. There are 3 things I would like to know regarding KDE on N800: 1) How can I access on screen keyboard for KDE? Or is there one? 2) How can I print? Any step-by-step to set up CUPS? and 3) Mouse support? A How to would be great.

If anyone can help with questions above that would be great. Doesn't have to be BP. I appreciate what you all are doing. :)

1) As PCQ mentioned the kvkbd is under utilities menu.

2) Open Konqueror and go to CUPS bookmark, and setup a printer. No step by step here, but the internet is huge, someone probably has the same printer and setup as you?

3) There is no mouse support yet, keep your eye on the mouse_poll project, its looking very promising

4) You must excuse me GodFather, I only provide answers to help you along your journey, I hope I have not offended you GodFather, please dont break my legs :)

Re: KDE3.5.8 v2 Beta Testers (Boot from SD users)

This is the error I get when I try to send via the
gmail smtp server (very useful since it works - if
it works - anywhere in the world):

Code:

SASL(-4): no mechanism available: No
worthy mechs found authentication not supported,

My kmail gmail smtp settings are identical to my laptops's,
which can send mail via gmail no problem.

Maybe kmail was built without sasl support? But yes, I can
send mail from home via my isp's server.

Ability to lock the screen, (sorry n800 users have no way to unlock) So do not lock it.

I will pay penguinbait a bounty to fix this (as in, I was going to donate after I got KDE running, but then had to remove my new N800's battery for the first time - and second time after discovering that logging out of KDE isn't good enough)

Being unable to lock/unlock is a deal-breaker, it keeps the tablet from being a mobile device because I can't pack it to take with me (grumble grumble no metal case grumble) so I can't use KDE.

QUESTION
Should I make the lock run as root, and provide roots password?

Or make you set a user passwd ?

ThoughtS?

Also, I would really rather not need to enter a 5-8 character password to unlock the tablet every time I want to use it - the default maemo way isn't great (compared to the 770) but it does work.

I have no idea what you are asking me? You can lock the device using the same way as in maemo? (using the power button) You can also lock the device using lock on the KDE menu, if you are running v2. You can not unlock via the KDE method on a n800 because you have no keyboard to enter the password. You could maybe set the user password to nothing and just hit enter, but I wouldnt recommend it.

Yes, I am talking about "Lock touch screen and keys" but I can't unlock it. I thought that was what you meant before, and it's the problem I wrote about.
I also just realized that it sounds like I was talking about "Lock device" - I just tried that, and has its own problems. That isn't what I meant thought. Sorry for the potential confusion.

I hadn't tried kdesktop_lock. It does indeed work, using an empty password (thank you) (and the fact that I could set it empty means passwd's statement about 5-8 characters is a lie)
However, the KDE lock doesn't do what my goal is: turning off the touchpad and buttons to save battery power when the tablet is in transit.
For that I need the power button screen/key lock to be usable.

With root you can do anything, including making your system insecure if you so choose. Nothing is lying to you ;)

Why is your power button screen not useable? It works on my n800 and n810?

Is your problem fixed, I am still confused?

I can't unlock my n800 after I choose "Lock touch screen and keys" from the power-button menu while in KDE.

When I try to unlock it, I press the power button and it says
"Now press [Square]"
when I then press the square select button it says
"Press the following keys one after the other: [Power] and [Square]"
instead of unlocking. It doesn't matter how quickly I press the keys, or even hold them both down, it just won't unlock from KDE or after logging out of KDE until I reboot.

It works fine from Maemo if I have not yet run KDE since booting.
