Getting fvwm2 to run is trivial and it works great, very fast.

The problem running other window managers is:

1. the keyboard bug locks up the machine (not only under other window managers but I seem to see it more because I put a lot more demand on my machine when using another wm)
2. dbus doesn't run properly under other window mangers (don't ask me why). This will keep apps like microb and various others from launching. This is the showstopper because you can't use several of the basic apps.

If a way could be found around the dbus issue, the n800's would be so much more fun. I really don't like matchbox or the hildon desktop. fvwm can be made to be so much more.

The most likely problem is that you don't have a /usr/local/bin/startmaemo, but fortunately you don't need it. If you look at /usr/bin/icemaemo, it first stops the maemo desktop and then starts icewm. Just do the opposite of stopping maemo to restart it afterwards:

Which keyboard bug? Not trying to be obtuse, but there's a passell of 'em, variously affecting various people. I find my BT keyboard experience to be (comparatively) trouble-free.
And I suppose that's definitely worth investigating, when I get to it...

The keyboard bug is a lockup of the keyboard input on the device. I suppose if you have an 810 you might be ok, but with the 800 and screen input you get problems. I've posted elsewhere about this and someone has said that it happens when the machine is under heavy load.

The dbus issue is another matter. I don't see much use in having another window manager (which I DO want) when I can't run much of the software. So I suffer with matchbox :( On another thread, a bounty has set on getting microb running under another manager (KDE?) so once someone figures that out, we'll be free to do a lot more with our devices.

Ah, good to know it's on-screen; I'm reasonably cool with only BT keyboard. (Especially if I can switch WMs readily.)

The nicest thing about doing it up right with a good wm is virtual screens. Throw each app in its own screen and switch between them with one click. Fast, works well, no screen space wasted.

is there a way to install another browser in ICEWM ?

something as complete as microb but that work under something else than hildon ?

10 month later bump !

was discussed in the direct boot to kde thread.

if it's easy to do it so it can be installed in flash like your previous version (I loved it) but use all the nokia applications from Hildon. (like microB to get a decent browser)

I can live with the "manual adding applications to menu" if it keep being as fast as it was on the previous version and involve less valuable time on your side.

the n800 keyboard problem was easy to solve using xkbd or using a real keyboard. the bluetooth mouse was also as responsive as on a regular laptop.

as I remember, the log-out from icewm was taking us in darkness of a frozen device.
