To the naked eye, the glass of those windscreens is identical to other lightly tinted glass. The tint is, however, a very fine layer of metal. This acts as a very effective screen for GPS signals. The same type of glass is sometimes used for office buildings. It also screens wifi signals, 3G phones, etc... 3G still works, because the towers can increase the power to fairly high levels, but reception is markedly degraded. |

The N810 GPS has a huge number of channels and will acquire a fix in less than a few minutes even if you are moving. Usually.

Re: Your help needed in improving N810 GPS performance
i remember reading a thread on this board that if it is a true cold start (no fix w/i24or 48 hours) then the fix time is very long (and i can verify from my experience) if you have had a fix w/i 24 or 48 hours then the fix is much shorter (on the order of about 2 minutes or less).

I tried all those. Put the N810 outside the window and facing the sky, clear bringht sunshine 12 noon, )((*&%%$$###, no fixing. The only think I did not try is to stand still. I finally got it by reboot, still, it took a solid 21 min after reboot. This N810, or any N810s, in general has problems with the GPS. I think I would reflash, and no improve, then return.

Re: Your help needed in improving N810 GPS performance
I've used my N810's GPS on several trips. I find that when it tries to get a lock while moving (I never wait for it to lock on before starting to drive), it takes somewhere between 2 and 4 minutes to get a lock. If I actually stand still and watch it get a lock, it takes 1-2 minutes. These are all very 'cold' locks, in general, since I don't use it all that much, and frequently it's not in the same location it was when the GPS was last used.
The other day, I fired up maemo-mapper in the house, so I could download a route and maps and such for a new trip, and it happily fired up the GPS and attempted a lock. I laughed, thinking no way, because the nearest window was 5' away and has metal miniblinds covering it. Took the GPS all of 90 seconds, TOPS, to get a fix. Go figure. -Jennifer |
