I've heard of seemingly white babies getting "blacker" as they grow into children. But never heard of a pale teen getting darker without tanning.

I've never heard of this fiasco before but it does seem to be a case of "blackface" and denial. And it's sad that people affix to such superficial points.

'mericans got some mitey big problems with tolerance...doesn't matter the colour...everyone down south regardless of their colour is too quick to start something.
It really isn't something recent either.
Always has been like that too...for a very long time.
