Just a small update - it's being reported today that Bell and Telus will be switching on their GSM/HSPA networks in November. The network speed is said to be 21Mb/s, which is nice to see. No info about pricing or frequencies (c'mon, 1700), but coverage is said to reach "93 percent of Canadians in almost 20,000 cities and towns". See the Globe and Mail link below for more details. And while the article is about the iPhone coming to Bell/Telus, they specifically mention Nokia N-Series phones as being an option. Interesting times...

And even better news, the Canadian $ just keeps climbing against the USD, Euro, and Pound, so the N900 is already getting cheaper for us. :)

Actually ordering from the expansys-usa is going to be cheaper than ordering from their canadian web site... but while you can do that it seems to be even cheaper at MobileCityOnline (and they ship here for 25$)

I know that when you buy things from the US there is usually (although not always, I haven't figured it out completely) a customs duty to be paid on delivery (plus the @#$! "brokerage fees").

Depending on that buying south might not be all that cheap. Do you guys know better about that?

I'm in Edmonton, and I am considering very seriously to upgrade my N770 to a N900. :)

If you order with USPS (the Canada Post equivalent) you'll get it closer to your place and at worst pay your taxes...
But at all cost, if you can, don't ever use UPS, from the US they charge insane fees!

You have to ship EXPEDITED to avoid brokerage fees.

Expedited means that the shipper fills out the form for Customs that states the correct code for the item in the package so the proper duty is applied (for example 5% GST, or nothing depending on the item).

Without the paperwork done ahead of time, someone at the border does this for you (a broker) and you get to pay a nice happy service fee for their trouble. Chances are they'll put the wrong customs code on the item anyway.

You may pay a little more for expedited shipping up front (because they're filling out paperwork for you), but the item will spend a lot less time at the border and you avoid brokerage surprises.

The strange thing is that at most i always paid the due tax with Canada Post, at the receiving desk, near my home... Never had any other fees.

While on the other hand, I've had 80$ charges asked for a 100$ item with UPS ! And a lot of people i know too, they are known to be the worst.

I saw the news of Bell/Telus switching on the new GSM system, and I immediately thought of the n900. Hopefully they have the data frequencies for the n900.
