There's a researcher I stumbled across recently who has a novel theory about 2012: he thinks we have the start of the Mayan civilization wrong. He believes that based on similarities, the Mayans and Egyptians were contemporaries and both (re)started their civilizations at the same time after a great flood (note that both have origin myths/legends along those lines).

The fascinating part is, if you move the Mayan calendar origin to match the Egyptian Zep Tepi (beginning), then the end of that calendar no longer falls in December 2012 but exactly at the threshold of the Age of Aquarius.

That's funny. The first words out of this philosophy teacher's mouth were, "If you knew when and where a black hole experiment was going to take place, what would you do?" First day of class, first class of the day, we all just sat there. It was one of those Simpson's silent moments. He then told us that we of course would do everything in our power to destroy it. I personally don't think self preservation beats apathy every time.

If 2012 means anything, it means a transition. It most certainly (IMO) does not mean the end of the world or of civilization, etc. But it might mean the end of the present era and the start of something new. I don't expect anything abrupt, however. Just a gradual phase change, with this point in time being significant, but in a subtle way.

Gotta learn how to tap into the wisdom for this stuff to begin making sense. The intellect is too limited.
