For ping? Unfortunately you need to be root to do this, so you'll have to first install rootsh from App Manager. You can then run:

sudo gainroot
ping server.name

EDIT: Vine server works like a charm. Now I'll just need to experiment to see how happily it will coexist with Apple Remote Desktop. Thanks again
