Re: [Poll/Discussion] Are You Going To Sell Your N900 When the New Meamo (6) Device Is Released?

There is no way I will buying the next maemo-based phone if it was released this year!

I spent £500 when I bought the n900 in December 2009.

There is no way I'll be gullible enough to think "oooohhh - new maemo phone this year - I must buy it" and spend another £500 a new phone.
£1000 spent in a year - on mobile phones?
No thanks I'll wait minimum 18 months to a couple of years before I think about that.

However, if Nokia brought a new form-factor - e.g. no keyboard, slimmer and higher spec camera. Then fair enough create a device for wider appeal - attract new users.

I won't buy one just yet - maybe in a couple of years.

If Nokia release a new maemo version and make it painful to port maemo5 based apps to it then it will be an "Epc fail" and people will jump to Android or new iPhone.

I'm hoping common sense will prevail and Nokia will produce a new form factor with an updated maemo-based device.

If Nokia had any sense they would ensure theat maemo 5 apps can run on maemo 6 and grow the application pool.

Also backport some of the changes to maemo 6 to maemo 5 or a full upgrade.

This will help devlopers write software that can run on both versions of the os.
Ideally you write your apps on "updated" or QT-enabled n900 (even n8xx too) - it runs fine on maemo 5 and maemo 6 users can run it on thier devices too. Just by using a single binary.

Over time the volume of usable applications increases making the platform more desirable.

Sure maemo 6 can be QT-based and include refinements to the os - that's fine but if it means incompatibility then Nokia are wasting thier time and will continue to lose market share and we will start losing interest.

I only sell homes, cars and bad stocks. I'm an easy mark for companies like Nokia. I even keep broken stuff. It's a disease, actually.

If I can upgrade N900 to Maemo 6 I will keep it. At least for 2-3 years.

But if I can not I will really consider should I stay with Nokia in the future or should not.

Regards.

Totally agree with you!

Had a N95 and now got a N900, if Nokia launches a new device with Maemo 6 just about 6 months after N900 and doesn't support upgrading from Maemo 5, I will never buy a Nokia product again.

This is not a threat or an emotional statement, it is just that as a customer I can't accept buying a product that should be supported for less than a year. If this indeed happen most application developers will focus just on Maemo 6 and there won't be any new apps for N900 owners. It would be a kick in the *** for the early adopters that trusted Nokia pre-ordering the N900 and acted as beta testers.

I prefer the flexibility of a resistive screen (stylus, finger, nail, pen, etc), and the better resolution for drawing quick sketches etc. I haven't found any compelling reason to use "pinch to zoom" or any of the other capacitive screen selling points.

Since Maemo 6 will be capacitive, with likely similar hardware, there's no reason to trade in my N900.

Re: [Poll/Discussion] Are You Going To Sell Your N900 When the New Meamo (6) Device Is Released?

A quote from a magazine editor about nokias upgrades for internet tablets

Nokia has a policy on the (former) Internet Tablets to offer an upgrade to the following version of the OS, which has been the case on every device since the original 770 was released (back when it was OS 2007, 2008 etc).

We were told at Nokia World (last September) that this would continue on the N900 and its successors. It seems likely that the next two models (one which is going to be a netbook design) will have Maemo 6, upgradeable to 7. At this point, the N900 would be on 6 and theoretically have no further support.

Having said that, Nokia has usually continued support for longer than you'd expect. I suppose with Apple and Google/Android now offering free upgrades on an ongoing basis, Nokia will find it harder to simply say something is end of life as quickly as they have done before.

I hope this helps!

if nokia does the same thing w/ fp1 can't upgrade to fp2 then I'm switching to andriod with the x10. I spend 500 on n900 I expect to have support for awhile.

Do you think Nokia will release any new device with Maemo 6 before 2011?
