kind of. due to it's primarily open source nature, we dont need custom firmware, just custom packages - for example, the custom hildon-desktop packages that are floating around the forum, advanced clock plugin, swappolube, replacable icons/themes, theme customizer.

in a way, the minute you enable extras-devel and extras-testing, you're building your own custom firmware.
