Re: The Ubuntu Thread
Well, as kubuntu 11.04 won't even reinstall from iso on my laptop, I'm currently installing Ubuntu 11.04 to replace it (nice of it to automatically detect and replace the old one).
I'll guess I'll have no choice but to test Unity more thoroughly then :) |

I think the super-key is a revelation, though other aspects of the UI leave a bit to be desired (IMHO, of course). It's not perfect, however. I expect that in time it will improve. |
Re: The Ubuntu Thread
Decent on a small screen. Ridiculous on a large one.
They've tried to appease the masses by offering shiny, whizz-bang features and modeling their UI after mobile implementations, that work half-assed because they have a touch screen for input. |

Re: The Ubuntu Thread
Well, well. Reinstallation failed miserably (I possibly shouldn't have used btrfs in the first place), so I wiped the partitions back to ext4 and reinstalled a fresh ubuntu (all glory to daily backups).
Now, "my hardware is apparently not compatible with unity" and I'm left with the standard gnome desktop. So much for testing unity :) |
Re: The Ubuntu Thread
@Capt'n Corrupt:Good article. Informed me about the Ubuntu very nicely. I am also eagerly waiting for your Fedora 15 Beta review.

I just felt like leaving my impressions because this is my primary work system. I wish I had the time/patience/money to do more reviews as I suspect it would be much fun, but at present my days have been commandeered by other interests to which I've assigned a higher priority. I suspect I should have started a blog. The problem is that I know I don't have the stamina to keep it up in the long-run. So I type here instead. |
Re: The Ubuntu Thread
A couple weeks on, and Ubuntu 11.04 has proven somewhat ok in terms of UI interaction, but has suffered in terms of stability on my machine. I have to restart perhaps once every 3 days and often at the worst times! Sometimes the UI becomes slow to the point of freezing, or displaying strange graphical artifacts on the screen.
I expect these problems will be worked out in time, but I'm still missing Gnome 3. :) |
Re: The Ubuntu Thread
My minecraft server is still running 11.04, and it is the only machine running 11.04, it has not crashed but when using VNC to access it, it has some weird graphic glitches, not on the machine it self, but using VNC only, before i "upgraded" it to 11.04 it was fine and had no problems with VNC.
But hey maybe in the near future, or in 6 months time newer versions of ubuntu will work good again. But for now im sticking with my trusty 10.10. it just works. |
