I think in the context of this discussion, dpi and ppi are synonymous. :)
And the iPhone screen has a lower pixel per inch than the N800...
N800 dpi/ppi => 4.1" diagonal, 800 x 480 pixels => 228 dpi (or ppi)
iPhone dpi/ppi => 3.5" diagonal, 480 x 320 pixels => 165 dpi (or ppi)
So if text on the iPhone appears "crisper" it's not due to the screen, more likely the underlying rendering technology. I would expect images to be more accurate/crisper on the N800 screen due to the inherently higher resolution.
