That's just Dave quoting from the same rules. It doesn't say anything different (does it?)

Is it "Referendum voting will be open for the same length of time as the council elections" which has made people think that it needs to run concurrently; or is it just the current Council's desire to deal with both simultaneously so that the new Council can hit the ground running?

I could live with yes/no options but IMO it's good to have the third protest vote option since those tell you something more than unused votes. for example if I don't find a good candidate in the parliament elections I still use my right vote by voting nothing instead of not voting. Not voting would be a vote for "I don't care".

As for the proposed time frame, I would like to point out that at the moment the majority of community may be on vacation. September/October would be a much more sensible time for debates on both the elections and referendum.

All things considered I think it is good you've started the debate on this, since now it makes things much clearer.

No, your "abstain" vote serves as a proof of legitimacy when comparing total number of votes against census.

For election to succeed you have to determine the census first.

The number of voting tokens sent out is a well known, fixed, finite number based on extracts from the two user databases (Garage & Talk) against the eligibility criteria.

Yes, but that does not provide you with information how many N800/N810/N900 (maemo) and N9/N950(meego)) are there.

The interest of N9/N950 group are not the same as for maemo devices. In fact based on the events here, it seems they are very conflicting.

Perhaps it is off topic, and perhaps it is a sensitive area, since I suppose you were the one who made those rules in the first place... but I don't think the arbitrary, non-democratic declaration that I am a Maemo community council member due to a lack of candidates is a particularly compelling reason to "live by the rules of the body [I] volunteered to serve on".

Indeed, all the referenda to date have been about changing the rules before the next election.
Indeed, though 12.3 ("referendum voting will be open for the same length of time as the council elections") is ambiguous (does "same" mean identical or merely equivalent?).

But since there's precedent and nobody complained we can assume the latter interpretation, so there's no real need to rush the reorg referendum right now.

Community apartheid? Because I've got an N950, my voice now counts for less?

But what about the fact I still regularly use an N810 (and there's another in the house that, until recently, was being used daily); and - sure - I'm now down to "only" one N900. Pfft.

What would you do with such a census? Declare the results of the election invalid if too many "undesirables" voted for the option you didn't want?
