Re: Modest Beta for OS2008 Now Out

It seems strange that so many people are having so much trouble; I saw where the Internal Error happened, but as long as an instance of Modest was open, it worked fine. Now with W12, it seems to work fine entirely. I'm using GMail IMAP, SSL IMAP4S, and having no trouble.

And for people who think that fat scrolbars on the default client would make it fine, maybe, if you don't use GMail at least, it would be. But I used it a little before, and I think Modest is much improved. It's beta, of course, and so there are some troubles, but it's already better than the built-in one and improving (in stability) despite the odd glitch along the way.

Thanks for your instructions. I am using them with every new release of Modest. The "Internal Error" message is killing me.

Me too. But, like you, I keep hoping and I keep installing... then uninstalling...

But I want to start Modest, go to fullscreen and use Modest the whole time in fullscreen. This doesn't work.

I use the latest Modest version.

Re: Modest Beta for OS2008 Now Out

Reflashed and reinstalled the latest version

1) SSL error on connection to imap.gmail.com that I never got before.

2) Neither read or deletions appear to actually carry over to gmail.

3) The LED indicator often does not flash even though I have new mail. On occasion it works, but most of the time not.

4) Background checking doesn't crash... but doesn't appear to actually work either. ( Might be related to #3 ).

Re: Modest Beta for OS2008 Now Out

I just installed modest 1.0-2008.12-1 (first time) and it works smoothly. I hope they will improve features and get this working for everyone else, but I have a couple questions. I'm used to thunderbird and gmail imap for my pc, and I was curious if there is a way to get the folders to point to local folders on modest.

For instance, if you click delete on a message in modest, on the server it just archives (only seen in all mail) unless you use the file menu to move it to the [Gmail]/Trash folder. Is there a way to customize the folders to work as it does in thunderbird for the spam, trash, and sent mail?

Other than that, I'm just hoping this can replace the default map so I can remove that one, but luckily i'm not the only person waiting for that...

Re: Modest Beta for OS2008 Now Out

Just some little feedback from me:
I use Imap via SSL with a rather big mailbox (~20000 mails in 20 folders).
After I entered my account information, everything seemed fine and the only thing I misses was a feature like "default imap folder for all sent mail" instead of a local copy.

After I closed the first instance of modest, I re-opened it. It started by telling me, that my username/pw was incorrect. I entered the same as before and got a pop-up window which wanted to check the supported authentication methods. Unfortunately this one locks up immediately.

I will return to claws again and check back when a new version becomes available

Re: Modest Beta for OS2008 Now Out

any progress on figuring out why the ssl error ALWAYS comes up when using gmail IMAP or POP???

qole 2008-03-28 17:35

Re: Modest Beta for OS2008 Now Out

For Gmail IMAP, I have the following working settings in Modest under the Incoming tab:

Incoming Server (IMAP4)*: imap.gmail.com
Secure connection: SSL (IMAP4S)
Port: 993
Use Secure authentication: UNCHECKED

Re: Modest Beta for OS2008 Now Out

just installed version 14-1.
guess what...internal error is back.

someone please: i'm running an imap configuration with serveral subfolders. claws-mail isn't really an alternativ for me. modest would be great what was the last working version for imap handling?
version 10,11 keeps crashing
version 12 doesn't collect my mails

what about a previous version - any suggestions?

oops...some typos

alephito 2008-03-29 00:36

Re: Modest Beta for OS2008 Now Out

I just installed version 14-1 and apparently my "Internal Error" is gone.

What about you, Qole?

EDIT:

Well, I spoke to soon. "Internal Error" is back. But at least now I think I know what is going on:

I use Modest with two Gmail accounts. One POP and one IMAP. The POP account works well with the automatic updates. No problems at all. But the IMAP is the one causing the crash.

With version 11 I did not have the error messages, but I did not have the automatic updates messages for the IMAP account either. So now I disabled the IMAP account (I will check it with the browser) and will stay with version 14.

I hope in version 15 the problem with Gmail IMAP is finally solved.

qole 2008-03-30 01:09

Re: Modest Beta for OS2008 Now Out

With version W14, I have noticed that Modest gets far fewer "Internal Error" messages now. Almost entirely gone. No more clicking through a stack of 10 error dialogs in the morning, just the occasional error every couple of days.

alephito 2008-03-30 03:51

Re: Modest Beta for OS2008 Now Out

Lucky you. My Gmail IMAP account started with the errors less than an hour after the upgrade. And every single incoming e-mail ended in an error.

Apparently there is no pattern, right?

osofast 2008-03-30 03:53

Re: Modest Beta for OS2008 Now Out

I put version 14 and I no longer get the internal error dialog.

alephito 2008-03-31 21:54

Re: Modest Beta for OS2008 Now Out

Well, I decided to try version 14 again. I have to say that I received only one "Internal Error" message in the last 24 hours. A nice improvement. But sometimes there are e-mails that do not trigger the automatic announcement.

macr0t0r 2008-04-04 16:34

Re: Modest Beta for OS2008 Now Out

Well! Version 14 is holding up quite nicely! It hasn't crashed or given me the internal error dialog for an entire week, now! I've "come back" to the Modest Beta app. However, I think I'll be a tad more hesitant about updates in the future.

Now....I have a feature question. I'm using imap. I have it set to download the entire message and attachments. My max size is 5000kB. Yet it STILL won't download the full message in my inbox. Every message gives me the "receiving" delay before opening. There is the menu to download the rest of the message, but it is grayed out when I have multiple messages selected. I have my Modest cache folder linked to my SDHC card, so I truly want to have it download the entire Inbox so that I may read it offline.

So: imap email ignores the "download entire message" option. Bug or Feature?

on that note, im using pop with headers only. but i just noticed that i could still read mails that i know are no longer on the server. still, they where downloaded with a older version. i have yet to test with the most recent.

Re: Modest Beta for OS2008 Now Out

what do i do , once uninstalled , to clean all traces of modest from the filesystem? and also... those that have gmail IMAP working , do you have the built in client set the same way , if at all.... trying to get some other details to try to track why im getting the cert. error

brontide 2008-04-08 18:13

Re: Modest Beta for OS2008 Now Out

munky261

I just did a clean install and I get the cert error as well. It also doesn't check mail in the background and tendes to get locked up occasionally "receiving" to the point where I have to killall modest in a terminal.

So it's not just you.

munky261 2008-04-08 18:23

Re: Modest Beta for OS2008 Now Out

you and i are having the exact same problem! mine doesnt check in the background either , and it also does the lock up thing occasaionally. any ideas on what causes this cert problem? are you by chance using macchanger to get more trials on the wayfinder app? i am and i was wondering if this had any effect on the certs?

edit: does using the rtcomm update have any effect do you think?

brontide 2008-04-08 19:05

Re: Modest Beta for OS2008 Now Out

I am using rtcomm beta, but honestly neither should have an effect.

Failure in the background checking is probably because of the cert error. Getting stucks seems like a failure to recognize network changes... trying to check the source, but garage.maemo.org is being flakey again.

munky261 2008-04-08 19:06

Re: Modest Beta for OS2008 Now Out

OMG a maemo site not working correctly??? NEVER!!! LOL

pixelseventy2 2008-04-08 22:10

Re: Modest Beta for OS2008 Now Out

I get the same, background checking doesn't, and it sometimes hangs on receive. I don't have the rtcomm updates. Plus I can't send mail via my smtp server with tls; I think that is because I have a self-generated certificate.

Re: Modest Beta for OS2008 Now Out

Modest W15 is out, and the two most annoying bugs seem to be fixed:
1) No Internal Errors (yet)
2) Mail read in Modest is marked read on the Google IMAP server

Interestingly, after installing this version, I ran Modest and got a dialog about trying to connect to Google IMAP with an unauthorized? unknown? (I forget) certificate. I clicked on "yes" or "OK" or something and then it downloaded my e-mails. It also didn't start doing background checks until after that, too. It was only after I had cleared the dialog that I realized I should have written down what it said to report here.

The release notes for this version specifically say that they've fixed some background checking errors.

Interesting, I've tried to run Application manager 3 or 4 times and I'm still not seeing a -15 update. ( 8am EDT 4/9/08 ).

I have been running version 15 for three or four days and still receiving a couple of Internal Errors a day.

This happened to me too. But after accepting the message, everything worked as expected.

Dumb...

I've been running 15 as well.

1) Cert errors

2) No background checking

3) Receiving lockups

And this is on a system just reflashed with os2008 51-3

Re: Modest Beta for OS2008 Now Out

So, this is the e-mail client that is coming on the new OS, and it isn't even working? I just installed 15 and its useless to me as my site requires a SSL connection. It won't even connect and download e-mail! I'm pretty surprised they would release a client that is this broken from the start. Are we missing something? Is there some secret bit of advice somewhere to get it running? I'd be very curious, and grateful to know.

That's why it's a BETA, so we get a free preview and they get testers to help them make it better.

Besides, it seems to work fine for an awful lot of people (I'm among them)—just because it doesn't work for you doesn't mean it doesn't work period.

If you have a valid bug, then go to http://bugs.maemo.org and file one. Be sure to include as much information as possible and the steps required to reproduce the issue.

It's a BETA, the point of a beta (despite what google seems to believe) is to work out all the bugs so they don't make it into the final release.

Hello,

I'm also having internal error with this new version as also on previous releases.

pixelseventy2 2008-04-10 08:29

Re: Modest Beta for OS2008 Now Out

I've never seen the internal error, and w15 runs happily in the background, but it's still hanging occasionally on receiving, and has to be forcibly "kill -9" before it works again.

Also, and I'm not sure if this is me or not, but when pulling email from my IMAP server it seems to be saying everything is unread if it's new for the device, even if I've read it elsewhere.

Apart from these few niggles, I'm very happy with modest. A HUGE improvement over the built in client. Having looked at creating simple IMAP clients in the past, I know what a b*tch the spec is, so kudos to anyone who can implement a working client.

mscdex 2008-04-10 19:03

Re: Modest Beta for OS2008 Now Out

I've only had the internal error happen once a long while back, but haven't since then. Just the other day it notified me of new mail and downloaded the messages no problem. I have the latest version (w15) running on 50-2 (the one prior to the latest OS version).

Navi 2008-04-11 00:27

Re: Modest Beta for OS2008 Now Out

I'm getting "Error while retrieving email" when trying to open an email from the notification.

brontide 2008-04-11 12:58

Re: Modest Beta for OS2008 Now Out

Ok, now It's not checking for new mail even when it's in the foreground ( even the topmost app). Clicking on rescan usually finds the new mail assuming it doesn't sit them saying receiving until I killall modest.

brontide 2008-04-11 13:41

Re: Modest Beta for OS2008 Now Out

Oh and also with 15, messages are no longer marked as read on the server.

I'm going to try a complete uninstall, reboot, and see if a reinstall will fix it
