which hinderd my ability to use apt-get. The instructions I gave are very simple to follow and I included one by Schmot that would help newbies like me. I would do first 3 steps with apps you have installed and if you can accomplish those three you should be alright to continue to the other three steps. If you are familiar with linux and especially xterm the whole process should take 40 minutes. Make sure to remove any app monitoring apps they really screw up the process because they are so cpu/memory hogs. Do the simple dual boot first if it goes well you can go back and add ext boot or even USB boot. The beauty of Fanoush's (step 4) and step 7 is they automate the whole process all you need do is hit return after each section is completed. The dual boot is an amazing app. I now have 3.3gb for os! Afterwards I highly recommend doing the USB Hub process I wrote about earlier in this thread. Laughingstok is right that this is so much better than anything apple has. I bought this it as a simple portable internet device and these new apps and os have transformed it into a more powerful multi use computer. Good luck. Dan |

Re: Thumbs up or down for new OS2008 for N800
My n800 has gained new powers thanks to Penguinbait and Pipeline.
If you followed this thread you can activate your usb port and add a hard drive(I added four sdhc cards). Now you can add with the following two apps dvd read/write capabilities and iso image capabilities. On the road I can now access dvd's. Enjoy, Dan dvd app and iso image app are both here. http://www.internettablettalk.com/fo...434#post134434 |
Re: Thumbs up or down for new OS2008 for N800
Dan,
Thank you for the post on the other thread re the "simple steps" to get USB OTG enabled. Can you please just lay out step by step the installs/applications and hardware i will need to get this done? The previous threads jump around a bit much for me to follow and a 1.2.3. guide would help out a lot. Thanks in advance, |

Cheers! I'm now up and running with a 3 GB boot partition and 11.9 GB "Internal memory card". Now to wait for a 32 GB card to drop in price (or fine... another 16 GB SDHC). Only complaint is that I can't mount the internal SD card over USB (because the OS is running on it) unless I reboot to internal flash, but since writing big files over USB feels way too slow, I'm likely to pull the card out and stick it in a reader until I get a big second card. |

everythingsablur,
Glad I could help make dual boot easier to install. It is amazing what you can do with the n800 running os2008. Now I will instruct on how to make it a truly amazing business tool. I was on a trip for a month and the n800 was my only computer! I was able to play videos for clients, had incredible wifi at every hotel I stayed in as well as wifi throughtout the cities I visited. I also for the first time using KDE did actual office doc's! If you followed my simplified instructions above on dual boot I will now show you how to add KDE office quickly and painlessly. Go back to Pronuke instructions and add steps 6(installs tar app),7(installs bzip2 app) and 8(installs/activates targnu). Then send a private message to PenguinBait(do a search for his message) and send him a pm saying that you have successfully installed the dual boot and are running the os2008 from mmc. There are several KDE threads to help explain in detail just do a search. Also PenguinBait has a website that has additional info. When PenguinBait sends you the KDE just follow his instructions for loading KDE or go back to Pronukes instructions and follow steps 11, 12, and 13. On Pronuke step 12 make sure to change in xterm under sudo gainroot the file name. KDE358.tar.bz2 /KDE358.tar.bz2 to KDE358v2.tar.bz2 /KDE358v2.tar.bz2 and SUP.tgz /SUP.tgz to SUPv2.tgz /SUPv2.tgz Step 13 of Pronuke instructions you need to change the following file name /tar jxvf KDE385.tar.bz2 to /tar jxvf KDE358v2.tar.bz2 /tar jxvf SUP.tgz to /tar zxvf SUPv2.tgz The first one will take about 40 minutes. The second one will take about 20 minutes. Make sure to reboot by typing: shutdown -r now Go into extra menu and click on KDE and it will load in about 2 minutes. Make sure to logout from KDE so that you go back to dual boot mmc menu without problems. To use KDE properly you will need a keyboard on n800(I use Nokia bluetooth keyboard) or keyboard on n810. There is an onboard keyboard in KDE when you are in a pinch but it is very small(see screenshot below). There must be over a 30 programs on KDE! :) Enjoy! Dan |

When I upgrade to OS2008, old application can't work properly anymore. The problem is:
Segmentation fault Maybe I have to downgrade to OS2007. But I don't know how. Please help me. Thanks in advance. |
Re: Thumbs up or down for new OS2008 for N800
Jakov,
If you dual boot you can have both os2007 and os2008 on same ITT. There are several threads that discuss how to do this from os2008. I have simplified instructions on this thread for dual boot. Hope this helps. Dan |

I've been following threads and searching for that information and can't find it. I can make a dual boot but the OS2008 side has no wireless and a couple of other things don't work. Can you please point me to the post that has the instructions to make a working dual boot for OS2007 and OS2008 where both OSs are fully functional? All I know is that you have to somehow set up kernel and initfs for the OS you want to boot into from the OS you are currently running, but I don't know how that is done. http://schmots.blogspot.com/ seems to have stuff that might work, but I'm not sure enough of the setup - what files do what - to work out the sequence. Re: Thumbs up or down for new OS2008 for N800
Zebee,
I'm traveling so I have very little time to search, but if you search for fanoush who created the dual boot he gives a very specific instructions on how to have both os's running. As far as os2008 you will need to re-flash if you are having wireless problems. I've read other posts that had that issue and it was because they had a corrupted version even from Nokia site. I and thousands of others can attest to how stable and easy os2008 is. No sd card problems, browser problems, Skype, keyboard, blue tooth, etc... that beset the os2007. Until I installed os2008 my n800 was a toy and a bad one at that. Heck when I took it in to flash os2008 they could not believe how I had the original os2007 which was better than all the follow ups. Read old posts and you will see how bad it was before os2008. Reflash os2008 and you will really enjoy the experience. Dan |

Re: Thumbs up or down for new OS2008 for N800
Bun,
I seem to remember Fanoush instructing someone on putting os2007 on a removable card so that the conflicts were minimized. Zebee why don't you PM Fanoush directly for guidance. Fanoush might have something new he hasn't released that might help you. Bun, still don't get why people still want os2007. OK some apps people customized but with all the new apps and porting of old apps I just don't see the advantages. Hey did you ever get that 16gb card and add 4-5gb of memory for os? I'm going to get the 32gb cards as soon as price comes down enough($150). A little birdy told me that the 64gb cards will be ready by Oct. Several manufacturers have been showing them off to big clients. That will bring price of 32gb to around $150 mark. I hope the next IT has a phone, enchanced camera(5mp) and two sdhc or 2 micro sdhc card slots and keyboard. Dan |

When I reflashed the main flash to 2007 I could boot 2008 from the card but wireless, which had been working, no longer did so. So As I have looked heaps and have not found how to get dual boot 2008 and 2007 with all things working, and you said you knew how, I was hoping you could tell me. Fanoush has given the general principles, that you need to load the kernel and I think the initfs of the OS you want to boot into from the one you are running, but I don't know how that's done and can't find any instructions or even leads. Re: Thumbs up or down for new OS2008 for N800
Zebee,
I don't use os2007 anymore. I remember reading that when you reflash back to os2007 it creates a lot of problems because hidden files get left behind even when you reflash. Fanoush commented that hidden files are left behind so that the process is simplified on your next update. I would reflash to os2008 and then add os2007 on removeable card. I don't know if that would cause problems with PIM software. No easy solution bro. I'm going to probably be in your predicament when they upgrade os2008 to os2009! :( I would PM Fanoush. He created the dual boot. Bun, If you want to get 4gb or more on your 16gb card follow my simple alternate instructions on this thread several people have PM me and put on thread that they have 4gb on 16gb cards running(see previous page) using my calculations. The two main obstacles are calculating the exact memory partition size based on your true total available memory(memory manager) and removing apps that conflict with the install of the dual boot process(osso status bar kept interfering with my install). BTW KDE is awesome now with 16gb cards on dual boot! Bun, have you gotten VNC running? Dan |
Re: Thumbs up or down for new OS2008 for N800
Dan,
I think you must be travelling too much. You should spend energy to help make 2007 and 2008 dual boot rather than teaching bun "to follow your simple instructions" on dual boot. OMG! bun |
Re: Thumbs up or down for new OS2008 for N800
Bun,
If I had a need for os2007 I would PM Fanoush and he would either tell me yes or no and that would be the end of it. I'm not an expert, nor do I have the time to become one. Zebee has a real need with PIM and I feel for him because I will be in that position when os2009 comes out. Zebee states that the developer of PIM will not be porting it to os2008. Not much room to manuever. I'm not an expert so I can only recommend other experts and defer to them. Same with the 16gb partition. My instructions are from experts (Milhouse, fanoush, Pronuke, Schmott and you). I only simplified the instructions that they and you provided. I take no credit other than putting it on this thread for others that may need it. I'm not teaching anyone, pointing out shortcut and tricks that that the experts gave me is all I'm doing. Nothing more nothing less. lol, Dan |
Re: Thumbs up or down for new OS2008 for N800
I have recently got my N800 and I have installed OS2008 on it. Its working fine. I was trying to access my Laptop (windows XP Media center edition) shared files from N800, to do so I have opened File manager and found few other network machines/folder but not mine laptop. I have turned off my Norton Internet Security Firewall (windows firewall is already tured off by default, since its using Norton firewall), then tried it again but could not see my sahred files/folder from laptop. However I can see the same shared folders from other Laptop/Machine (windows XP) and even from my Archos 604wifi.
My laptop is listed in "workgroup" (not in domain), I have full privilges on my user ID on laptop. Could somebody help me to get the network shared files from my laptop on N800. I don't know why its not listing my sahred folders in "file manager". I also wanted to reverse, I mean if I could access my N800 from my Laptop, is it possible? I appreciate your help. Thanks. Arun. |
Re: Thumbs up or down for new OS2008 for N800
arunchowdhary,
If I understand you correctly you are trying to connect n800 to your PC xp. If that is what you are trying to do then. You will need to install TightVNC on your PC with xp, get it here: https://garage.maemo.org/frs/downloa...N800_armel.deb Install instructions are included and very easy. Then on the n800 you will need VNC viewer, install directly from Application manager. The most important part is getting IP address of PC machine and n800. Set up password for both and you are up and running in a few minutes. This setup will not play audio or movie files for that you will need other apps, look in these threads for help with that. I have not attempted that yet. Hope this helps, Dan |
Re: Thumbs up or down for new OS2008 for N800
Thanks Dan,
I am trying to connect my PC with n800 for file sharing only not for remote desktop. I guess TightVNC will allow me to remote for both side, am I right. I want to just share my files in file manager/explorer both side. thanks, Arun. |
Re: Thumbs up or down for new OS2008 for N800
To see and download files from PC to n800 you will need to install x11vnc. TightVNC is only for viewing PC desktop from n800. I have not tried x11vnc but people here like it. Hope this helps, Dan
http://mike.saunby.googlepages.com/x....3-1_armel.deb This thread might help you more on file sharing in windows. http://internettablettalk.com/forums...ad.php?t=14909 |
Re: Thumbs up or down for new OS2008 for N800
There seems to be alot of people all of a sudden wanting to access their PC, MAC and Linux machines remotely and/or to transfer files or stream music.
As soon as I can get all the components installed and working properly I will post a simple user guide and step by step install as I've done on this thread onprevious apps. Dan |
Re: Thumbs up or down for new OS2008 for N800
Dan
I use VNC Viewer 0.6. Its an easy install. It does not let you transfer files, but I use it to desktop to my servers - no problem. |
Re: Thumbs up or down for new OS2008 for N800
I just installed x11vnc and it works beautifully. Give it a try. need to be in red pill(search for threads that show how to) mode before you install. I could not get the icon in extras to load because when I installed I was not in red pill mode :)(read about it after install)so I went into xterm and typed after sudo gainroot and hit enter, 'x11vnc' and then went and open VNC viewer. Then went to PC and open TightVNC viewer and put IP address of my n800 and YAHOOOOOO!!! I have my n800 screen on my PC with XP. It has a file transfer menu on top but it's not active. I will play around and report later when I figure out more. But I think this would help you out.
Hope this helps, Dan |

I use Ultra VNCWin32 on my PC's but when I bring up the transfer menu on the PC while in X11VNC, it says "the connected VNC server doesnt support file transfer". What have you found? |
Re: Thumbs up or down for new OS2008 for N800
TightVNC has the button for file transfer but I can't seem to locate how to activate. Dan

Re: Thumbs up or down for new OS2008 for N800
I updated to 51-3 and couldn't be happier. It's smooth, stable and looks great! I've had my N810 for about 3 weeks and it already feels like a part of me.
I'm still looking for a good, reliable (and simple) way to install AbiWord or similar, but knowing the Linux community, (I'm an ubuntu user) I'm sure it's just around the corner. Thumbs up! |
Re: Thumbs up or down for new OS2008 for N800
PaulRay,
Update the gronmayer repositories at www.gronmayer.com/it/ and download repositories then go into app manager and you will see AbiWord! If it doesn't show look in these forums for the link. I install Abiword it works beautifully. If you really want a full office I highly recommend you install KDE from Penguinbait. Absolutely mind bending port of full KDE. Enjoy. Dan |
Re: Thumbs up or down for new OS2008 for N800
Paul Ray has an 810, so probably OS 2008. Abiword is not yet ported to 2008 in the repositories, I don't think

Re: Thumbs up or down for new OS2008 for N800
I used 7 for about 2 days before upgrading to 8, because I have an 8GB SD Card coming. My impression is that 8 is much better in every way, but this could be confused by my progress up the N800 learning curve.
