The 2 ribs are light wight plastic. I am sure you could use a heavy duty nail cliper to remove them

The metal cover will be ready soon. The manufacturer purchased a N810 so they can get a better fit.

Maybe but so far its fun.

I must say though prior to adding the memory card adapter to my N810 I did not have much use for it because I was use to my N800 and all the memory. Now I have a 32GB installed and the cover have storage for one to 2 more.

I have also tested many memory cards including the Sandisk 16gb extreme III. It is the best but also the highest price. The time I use to to wait for card directories to show up in Xournal or file manager is now less than half of what it was. The music players scan the music much faster.

Also I am not sure of this yet but the battery life seems to be much better. This may have something to do with the fact the the card draws much more current when it is being accessed so the longer it takes to scan the more power it uses. I am not sure of this yet. It takes many days to test this on the tablet.

It would help if home up time kept a log file between turn on and off.

I am also working on some more exciting products so go on and get that N810.

A Google search tells me that this card advertises a 30MB data rate, as opposed to the Class 6 minimum speed rating of 6MB. That is really fast! On the other hand, I just bought a 16 GB Class 6 SD card for my N800 for less than $40. You stated that the 30MB/s card is only approximately twice as fast in practice, and my searches suggest that it is more than 4x the price... I guess I'll keep waiting.

I have only tested the card using quick observations so it may be much faster. There may also be a limiting factor in the tablet. I do not know this. I also have 2 Adata 16GB and others and this card is the one that makes the file accessing more tolerable to me. I will do some more exact testing in the near future. The thing I tested the most was the different current draw of each card. This is for another project I am working on.

Clearly the price difference will keep most people from buying this card but this is the way I educate myself and make sure I know what I am talking about mostly since someone asked me to write about different cards I have used. I was also very curious what the difference would be with this series of card. By the way I had to pay $130.00 for this education.

I am hesitant, because I use my tablet very often in my car, to play music, using the Nokia supplied "car mount".
Sorry, I may be wrong, but you did not answer my question once (the answer may be obvious, but :): the cover you make, makes the N810 unmountable in the car mount, right ?
It would be soooo cool, if that was'nt true...

Ummm.... If you are willing to invest in 96 GB of memory cards, and 3 adapters, would it really be that difficult to buy another car mount? There are multiple threads on car mounts that work with the N810.

Looks awesome, but I just bought a microSD card for the tablet. Oh well...

Yes, with stock tablet linux kernel maximum speed is approx. 7MB/s and with high-speed SD mode (48MHz) it is approx 12MB/s. So definitely 30MB/s is not possible. Also 30MB/s is not possible for SD even in theory. SD communication is in 4 bit mode and maximum defined bus frequency is 50MHz (SD specification). This gives 25MB/s maximum bandwidth of SD bus. Real maximum speeds are lower, see e.g. http://www.hjreggel.net/cardspeed/speed-cards.html#sd2 - Transcend 150x 4GB gives 21MB/s

On our tablet maximum SD bus speed is 48MHz (OMAP2 MMC clock 96MHz with integer divider) but CPU power and linux kernel and sd/mmc driver overhead reduces this to far lower speeds mentioned above. Also those are raw block device speeds, filesystem layer adds additional overhead too.

My initial guess is that he meant that 2 additional spare cards could possibly be stored inside the slightly larger cover. Just as the T3 cover has 2 pockets for spare cards.

No only one 32GB Sd card the cover just holds up to 2 more.

No you can not use the car mount with the adapter.

If enough people want this in the future I will make a adapter for the car mount to allow the bottom part of the current car mount to work with a new holder half. I gave this some thought since I do not use the current car mount and woud possibly want to mount the N810 near the future.

there are those USB pins in the space next to his card adapter so in theory anything USB small enough with <100mA is possible, maybe there are small usb cameras?

craves1, I wonder if that SD socket PCB of yours which is already tightly screwed can be extended to USB contacts with some pogo pins pointing to the bottom to provide easy usb solder points or pins on your PCB for various usb hacks?

I am making a plug system for those connectors. When the plug is ready many thing are possible.

I have also searched for the best things that will run with the tablet. My engineer is looking into a accelerometers, Tilt sensor, IR remote control, IR receiver, extra switches, The cover will also make these possible.

I have already tested several additional options that uses the "USBCONTROL" program to turn them on and off.

I have been working to identify which addons uses the least amount of current and is turned on the easiest and do not need any additional drivers.

I will also be making a small SD card reader made just for the Tablets. There will be no need for a adapter plug. I have already tested the best chipset for this and I am waiting for delivery of the parts.

By the way fanoush thanks for the SD card speed post. I figured it was a limitation of the tablet and also the hackers version of the adapter will be ready in a few weeks. Enough people have asked for them.

The pins are too close and all stock pins are too wide in diameter but I will solve this problem. Any connector will have to fit exactly or it will short.

I also purchased this card for testing and to use in my cell phone. The time it takes me to copy files to this card made it a limiting factor for me. I ended up making a 16GB card for my Nokia 770.

It is ok for this since it is class2 and the N770 only uses 1 data port to read the card any way. But even there it takes a long time for the directories to update.

You also can use this card with a Full Size SD adapter since there have been posts of problems with the Mini to Micro adapters. You then can also have faster cards to go with it, class 6 16GB for $40 or less.

I paid $99.00 for a class 2 16GB Micro SD

I find the camera's fixed position in the "wrong" direction the biggest failing of the N810. There's one solution that I've not seen discussed. Namely a a small view finder that slipped onto the top of the N810. It could be optical or even a wire frame viewer.

The Version just for people with the MUGEN battery cover will be available today.

The metal covers will not be ready according to the manufacturer until October 31st.
This has been the only holdup.

BTW, since usb drives are less than SD cards, how about finding a way to install the guts of a 64gb flash drive inside the N810?

I have not only found a way to install the "Guts" of a thumb drive in the tablet but I also know how to install a second SD card. Second SD card or thumb drive not both in the same cover. It uses the USB port under the cover. The thumb drives are not always recognized and do not all work right away.It seems the larger the drive the less it is recognized. On the other hand the second SD card using the chip-set I have identified seems to connect every time. I am working on this now. Also with the second SD card it can be removable. The only thing is they depend on the USBCONTROL software. This allow the second card to be turned off the save power.

The use of a thumb drive would be nice since they draw less power than a second SD card, about 10 to 12ma less

OR maybe I will just offer both?


This is a expensive overall project so how much further I go will depend on how many I sell.

Would I be correct when saying the USB port under the cover is the one available with the external cable? That would impact the use of the USB cable for transfer and other use.

craves1, would purchasing the current sdhc adapter allow for easily upgrading to your proposed internal usb thumbdrive or secondary sdhc card slot? i just purchased my n810 and your research and development and final product are just superb and I planned on purchasing this without hesitation; however, with your recent discovery that you just mentioned, i just wanted to be sure that purchasing your current adapter isn't a stopgap for a newer adapter, i.e., would have to buy both.

I am working on several products and the first one will be ready soon. Will they all be compatible? I hope so but thing are changing in the designs currently and there are no guarantees that they will work together. There will be at least 4 versions of what I am calling cover add-ons. They will be as simple as storage for additional SD cards, a LED flash light and as complex as a tilt sensor, ir receiver, second SD card, or flash drive and more. I plan to poll to see what devices work with the tablet’s USB port that is thin enough to be built into the cover

But you should understand that how much I sell of the current design will determined if I mass produce any other devices. The current solution with the metal cover is the main focus right now and when it is finished and if I do not get a good response I may move to my next project which may not be the N810.

Either way I am prototyping the Second SD card design over the weekend but it will take about 2 more weeks before I have the completed design and know how well it works and how easy it is to install. It will also be determined by my ability to make a safe connector for the internal USB contacts.

Also I will offer upgrade discounts if we get that far.

Keep checking the site and in the coming weeks you will see some devices with my help and the community's help that will make the N810 the one device I (you) crave the most.

Thanks much for the response. After I wrote my post, I realized that, exactly what you said, no matter what you end up doing, it pretty much all depends on the sales of the current sdhc adapter. So I went ahead and purchased one last night. I meant to check to see what form of shipping you used. Hopefully if it's USPS there is a chance I could get it this weekend eh? Just in time for the arrival of my n810. :) Anyway, looking forward to more of your awesome addons.

P.S., the thin metal cover you mention as coming soon on your website, will that be available separately from the kit? I ask because I haven't gotten a mugen extended battery yet, I was going to cut up the original n810 one and extend it by that small amount with some fiberglass/filler and source some paint to match the stipple pattern and color.

The unit will go out today by USPS Priority mail 3-5 business days. You will most likely receive it sometime next week. Send me a PM with what name you ordered it under so I can check.

Also do not cut the metal cover that came with the N810. The metal covers will be available sometime next week.

The cover will be able to be purchased with or without the adapter kit. This way if any one want to make their own project or need a replacement it will be easier to do.
