Re: ANNOUNCE: Easy Debian Turbo-Charged Edition!

First of all, thanks Qole! You've made me fall in love with my n800 all over again. This is what the tablets should have been out of the box!
A couple of comments:

1)For anyone questioning the speed, I have a fairly recent Tabletkiosk UMPC running Vista, Debian on the n800 blows it out of the water. I've cleaned out my Hildon stuff and leave LXDE running all the time.

2)As regards running out of room in the image file, I've found that running 'deborphan' in a terminal after any changes thru synaptic or apt can produce a significant list of unneeded libs that can be removed. After customizing to suit my needs, this allowed me to remove ~50mb more. Also, as much as I love the Gimp, mtpaint saves you ~45mb more space, works faster and uses the screen realestate better, and has most of the functionality of the Gimp.

Worked like a charm! I moved it into my /home/user directory and uncommented and updated the appropriate line in .chroot.

Thanks for all your hard work on this. You really are a rockstar now! :)

What part of KDE is more responsive? For me, the KDE environment is about the same as LXDE (although it takes a lot longer to start up), but the KOffice suite is definitely more responsive than OpenOffice and Konqueror is generally more responsive than Iceweasel. But many people prefer OpenOffice and Iceweasel and will live with some sluggishness.

True the LXDE environment does load quickly. You are correct about Iceweasel and OpenOffice.. What makes it really bad (to me) is that there is no feedback as to what is happening. I'm used to far more responsive UI's.

I can respect those who have different preferences, but in my so far limited experience, KDE is much better for what I would want to do on the tablet. I suppose the newness will wear off and I'll go back too plain ole maemo.

No. You are used to far faster CPUs.

Firefox doesn't have a splash screen on the desktop either.

Re: ANNOUNCE: Easy Debian Turbo-Charged Edition!

Concerning speed:

I actually originally installed KDE before Debian, but then uninstalled KDE because I thought Debian was so much better (and better includes speed).

And this was after qole's first Easy-Debian release, not this highly refined version now.

Personally, I think Iceweasel is crap speed-wise on a tablet. I never use it; for browsing Epiphany[-gecko or -webkit] or Midori work for me.

Also, I try to stay away from OOo for the same reason; in fact, I usually only use it for reading and editing advanced spreadsheets (it has the best Excel compatibility...).

As for application-launch-feedback, I look to the cpu taskbar applet ;)

This will download and install the big image to the memory card of your choice. It will take about a half hour to download if you have fast Internet connection, and another 15 minutes to extract it on your tablet.

First thanks for bringing my favorite distro to the NITs!

One question though, why require to download one big image file insted of 'debootstrapping' to a directory insted? so you can lower the space requirements by downloading and installing package by package (which avoids TCP starvation by the way), that's the only reason holding me to install: space.

Re: ANNOUNCE: Easy Debian Turbo-Charged Edition!

solca: A couple of options for you; you can install "Easy Debian Without The Apps", which is basically a debootstrap with a bit of tablet-specific tweaking. Or, if you want, you can install the very cool Deblet, which installs exactly as you say, package by package. The bonus of Deblet is that you can boot to it, too!

I decided to backup one of my microSD cards to the PC, now I will try yours and Deblet after I finish partioning this card, now I am wondering why 'apt-get install e2fsprogs' fails under Diablo, it seems the debs are mising at http://repository.maemo.org/pool/dia...e/e/e2fsprogs/
seems somebody forgot to properly populate the repo

Re: ANNOUNCE: Easy Debian Turbo-Charged Edition!

Woah, here's a great discovery:

Pimlico seems to load faster in the Easy Debian chroot than in Hildon. No explanation here... could just be my imagination, but it feels distinctly faster.

Furthermore, the EDS stuff remains consistent between the two environments. My calendar from Hildon's Pimlico is still accessible to Debian's, although only the first Local calendar - none of the others.

Another discovery: I can thus load Conduit and perform real syncing of my Evolution data, which means that Pimlico wins :P (For some reason the Maemo port of Conduit can't talk to Evolution yet).
One problem, though, is that Avahi isn't working for me. I set up Conduit with a network sync but _conduit._tcp from the N810 is not appearing my N810 on my other computer. Will do some poking. For now I could happily sync to an online file storage service.

Edit:
Okay, duh...
Thinking aloud now, but I just realized that avahi-daemon wasn't running on the tablet. (Anyone know of a nice, lightweight GUI to configure services on startup?)
Seems to hang, though. Too bad... may be because Ubuntu and Debian have slightly different versions. Or it may just be that Conduit 0.3.14 on the desktop is buggy :/

Now I almost want to run this chroot as my main environment, albeit with a tiny bit of the normal OS2008 environment underneath. It would be nice if we had something like XDM or GDM on startup with the tablet, because Deblet doesn't quite do it for me. (All that rebooting the tablet to get to another desktop environment is super wasteful considering that they all can run happily under the same kernel).

qole 2008-10-21 16:46

Re: ANNOUNCE: Easy Debian Turbo-Charged Edition!

Picklesworth: Perhaps you need to set up avahi in Maemo. Look for "Bonjour Support" in your list of installable applications in your App Manager. If you run avahi-daemon over in Maemo, I suspect your Debian apps will be able to use it. If not, I'm sure we can figure out what config files you need to copy.

Well, the whole point of this project is to run the two environments together, all snuggled-up and cozy-like. I'm always interested in ways I can bring the two closer together; if you find config files, temp directories, etc, that the two environments should share, I'd love to hear about it. The more seamless the better...

How do I get my regular dialog boxes after I uninstall easy debian turbo edition? when I open my wifi connection from the statusbar, the dialog box pops up at the top left and I have to drag it to the middle.

Hey, sorry it didn't work out for you.

Did you reboot after uninstalling? That should fix it.

(Also, recent versions of the package don't have the weirdly positioned windows by default.)

Re: ANNOUNCE: Easy Debian Turbo-Charged Edition!

Yeah I already uninstalled and did a 'cold' reboot. Do I have any othe option other that reflashing?

thanks

Re: ANNOUNCE: Easy Debian Turbo-Charged Edition!

I'm not sure why the hack didn't automatically revert for you. If a reboot doesn't fix it, we'll do it the hard way:

You need to open a terminal, gain root and enter the following:

Code:

cp /etc/osso-af-init/matchbox.defs.orig /etc/osso-af-init/matchbox.defs
If there are no errors, a reboot should fix things.

I tried that on my vanilla Easy Debian package, and I got the following message:

Code:

There is only 1 program which provides java
(/usr/lib/jvm/java-6-openjdk/jre/bin/java). Nothing to configure.

I'm trying to figure out how to set the available memory for the Java web plugin. Seems you can increase the size to 17MB by increasing the size of the /tmp directory, but after 17MB, it doesn't matter how big you make the /tmp dir. So where's the setting?

Yes, I just noticed that after removing all my other Java packages, qole.
Run "sudo update-java-alternatives -s java-6-openjdk"
That should jump into a longish configuration process that gets it all going.

As for openjdk, it's been working pretty nicely for me. As I mentioned, this is the first time it's been really usable. For example, other jres seem to run quite slowly and hang for ages with the file Open dialog. This one is snappy and seems to display a file open dialog I can use happily :)

Yes, that worked. Still trying to figure out how to boost the max memory... (see this post)

EDIT: BTW, you can run the Debian Chroot menu item and it will give you a root prompt. If you want to run stuff as user, you just have to add "hilda" before the command. ("hilda" is just an alias for "su user -c")

Re: ANNOUNCE: Easy Debian Turbo-Charged Edition!

When I start Debian LXDE, I get the "Log out instead of closing this window" window and then that window just closes. The first time after a reboot the window is open for a little bit, and with further tries it closes quickly. So I think it fires up debian and then fails to start LXDE. Debian chroot works fine. This is after I uninstalled previous installations and reinstalled.

I do not know where to find the source for the Debian LXDE button. So can you give me the LXDE startup command, either for the native terminal (also starting the chroot) or for within the chroot? I can then let you know the error message if the problem is not an easy one. Thanks.

Re: ANNOUNCE: Easy Debian Turbo-Charged Edition!

tda8190: I have no idea what's wrong. Are you running Diablo?

Entonian: It is very important that you download the new image file and delete the old one. The old image file didn't have LXDE installed, while the new one does.

If you are sure that you're using the new image file, then here's how to run LXDE manually:

First, open a (normal, maemo) terminal and run the following to put the icon in the right place:
Code:

sudo cp /usr/share/icons/hicolor/scalable/hildon/lxde.png /usr/share/pixmaps
You only have to run that command once, so that you can run LXDE from a terminal. Otherwise it crashes with an error about a missing icon.

The command that is run when you click on the icon is something like this:
Code:

hostwin LXDE /usr/bin/debwm 'this is a test'
The problem is that there are a lot of warning messages even when things are running smoothly. I guess you're going to have to post everything, however.

Entonian 2008-10-23 04:34

Re: ANNOUNCE: Easy Debian Turbo-Charged Edition!

Thank you, qole. I had my .chroot pointing to the old version of the image file.

Re: ANNOUNCE: Easy Debian Turbo-Charged Edition!

This sounds like what I was seeing when I upgraded from the first version install to the turbo version.

What I did was Close Debian from the menu, uninstall Easy Debian, delete the image file, reboot, and re-install everything.

After that, it worked fine for me. Not sure what the problem was.

Hi qole. Again, you da man!

Sorry if this has been asked (I searched....), but is there a way to install adobe flash player into iceweasel? I'm still very much a linux noob, so I tried to install the flash player tar.gz file via cli, and got "Your architecture...is not supported by the Adobe Flash Player Installer." My guess is that the reason for this is obvious to most around here, but a little help would be great!

Hi,

I just recieved my n810 yesterday and I played around with it and I love it so far and plan on using it as my mobile pentesting box for work. I would like to put easy debian on it. However, when I download the easy-deb I get a error message saying

Any ideas?

Don't yell this too loudly, but....

This version of Easy Debian comes with the Adobe Flash Player already installed. Stskeeps figured out a way to hack the one that comes with our tablets into Debian. If you're having a version problem, maybe you should try copying the new version of libflashplayer.so from maemo to Debian... I'll do some more research before I give details...

I like LXDE so much I'm running it fulltime. Got lxlauncher to autostart with LXDE, now I want to set up LXDE to autostar when I turn on the tablet. I've searched the forums, but can't find clear info on autostarting apps in Hildon. I don't want to brick it with the wrong shell script, which I'm not real good with anyhow.

I am having the issue where I only get the one-line keyboard (when in the Hildon environment), and when I run the xvkbd (in the debian image) the keys all seem to "stick", characters keep repeating and I can't really ever type anything. If I choose the regular keyboard (while running the debian image) it is displayed as the one-line keyboard. Any help would be appreciated.

Re: ANNOUNCE: Easy Debian Turbo-Charged Edition!

Eesh, is there any other way to power off a tablet? I got it installed before but then that whole weird screen line missing came up so I set up everything again. Now I'm downloading or rather installing? the image again and it says it's checked for it, sees it, but it's downloadniing EASY Debian Image file anyway?

And it's been stuck on there, no buttons work, no touch screen interaction (besides turning on the screen when it darkens). Really don't want to remove the battery considering that killed my 16 GB A-Data a few months back.

Edit: wound up having to remove the battery.. sighs.

Anyway, now there's this debian chroot file that's taking up 300+ MB that's apparantly read-only.. I can't get rid of it.
