Not in Microb, but a few changes to the X server have been put in place. May be some helps speeding up rendering and / or scrolling .

For sure Xournal benefitted from those changes.
Writing on it, is much more fast and accurate now.

Looks X is better in keeping up with the number of events when drawing/writing with the pen.

Re: SSU 5.2008.43-7 is available

It seems that after the upgrade the "ghost lines" problem in mypaint became worse.

When I lift the stylus in mypaint and put it down somewhere else on the screen, both points are being connected with a line.

This did happen before, too. But only oocasionally. Now it happens almost every second time I chage the position of the stylus in mypaint.

Can anybody confirm this?

Maybe this is related to the X server changes?

If this is causing a problem for you, the best thing to do is force a downgrade to the maemo version:
Code:

sudo apt-get install libxcomposite1=1:0.3.1-2
I didn't actually use qwerty12's updated version of libxcomposite1 myself, and transparency worked fine.

Thanks for that, it worked. Then of course I got the 'not enough space' error.

Just wondering when the news will make it to the front page, like all previous updates? Reggie?

Some people might find it reassuring, especially since this time around there seems to be very few if any failed SSU updates. ;)

(Besides, the flashable image of this update is available from Nokia's download site; something that wasn't apparent to me until I found a message about it in this thread)

Re: SSU 5.2008.43-7 is available

well, it's gone badly for me. firstly, I had the bluez problem, but a manual "apt-get install bluez-utils" removed the bluez-utils-test and fixed that.

Then it complained about osso-icons-default not being upgradeable - no repository found containing it. I checked /etc/apt/sources.list.d/hildon-application-manager.list and a backup copy I'd made and re-added the line
Code:

deb http://catalogue.tableteer.nokia.com/updates/diablo-2/ ./
That fixed that. It still didn't install the update from app mgr, saying lack of memory which I know to be wrong, so back to the command line. This is what I have at the moment:
Code:

# apt-get upgrade

No, it just outputs that because you've updated it from the CLI using APT. If you close that terminal you won't see these warnings and errors anymore.

Maybe you editted the specific rc script. If it is editted it won't be touched by default during upgrade. Purge mediaplayer-daemon and install it again.

no, this time round, I've not tweaked the tablet much at all, but your idea's a good-un.

--edit-- there's a huge dependency tree under mediaplayer-daemon. however, because I marked it and a bunch of other things as requested for delete and then unmarked, it allowed the dpkg--configure to work its magic. Hmm, well, App Manager reports nothing available, and apt-get-upgrade now reports nothing new, am still on 4.2008.36-5 :-(

Re: SSU 5.2008.43-7 is available

ok, after much ranting and messing about, using dpkg-r to mark packages for removal and then reinstalling them with "dpkg --reinstall install xxx", I finally reached the point where nothing was blocked upgrading and nothing was (autoremove) was going to be removed by accident. Couldn't remember what package it was that would actually do the version upgrade, so searched for rx34 and found it, did "apt-get --reinstall install osso-software-version-rx34-unlocked" and it's all done.

phew!

BTW, my apt sources looks like this:
Code:

# more hildon-application-manager.list
deb http://catalogue.tableteer.nokia.com/certified/ diablo user
deb http://catalogue.tableteer.nokia.com/non-certified/ diablo user
deb http://catalogue.tableteer.nokia.com/updates/diablo-3/ ./
deb http://repository.maemo.org/extras/ diablo free non-free
deb http://packages.collabora.co.uk/maemo diablo user
deb http://reg.fring.com/repository/ chinook release

is that correct?

Re: SSU 5.2008.43-7 is available

There is a problem with /usr/sbin/invoke-rc.d which is run by metalayer-crawler upgrade (and supld, and most other daemons) in the debian pre/post inst/rm scripts. They can't stop/start the daemon and fail so it will constantly say it isn't configured.

https://bugs.maemo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=3938

and

https://bugs.maemo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=3948

explain the problem in gory detail, but within the script it is doing a "ls -Q" which quotes the filename, but the busybox xargs leaves the quotes on, so instead of testing file xyz, it is testing "xyz" (with the quotes as part of the filename) which fails.

I can think of several fixes, but I don't know if it would work across all calling scripts and packages.

Re: SSU 5.2008.43-7 is available

Keep in mind a custom kernel you might have installed is overwritten, so such might also influence (perceived) speed of the device.

tz1 2008-12-22 16:30

Re: SSU 5.2008.43-7 is available

After some more checking, having a real "ls" can break the install (not just the xargs).

If in an xterm you can type "ls -Q" and it returns a list of files in quotes, it will break installs. If it gives a usage and bad option message, it will work (it is still broken but in a way that usually ends up working).

Updated my n810 without any issues, however when I dug my n800 out and tried to update it, it complained about some docs package that I've never heard of being required.
Looks like the update has a dependency on one of the previous OS updates, which is annoying. Guess I'll just re-flash this one from scratch, nothing on this device anyway.

This came right in time for me to clean install as opposed to update. And it worked like a charm that way. In fact, the battery life has improved from my last update, as well as it seems about two steps faster in the menus and browsing. And I thought the last update brought the speed up a bit.

I didn't restore from backup, just installed much less and so far, so good.

Yes, xserver optimizations from 5.2008.43-7 improve fonts rendering speed and graphics blitting operations. This results in some small performance improvement practically everywhere, and in the browser too.

But the application which should benefit the most is fennec browser from mozilla. It should get a huge performance boost once/if they switch from 24bpp to 16bpp rendering.

Since you've been out, let me fill you in about this 43-7update.

If you want to be absolutely sure, you can try this, http://www.internettablettalk.com/fo...ad.php?t=25673.

So far, I gather, the SSU update from 36-5 to 43-7 is fine on N810. However, if you have 30-2 or even earlier version, SSU will make you go thru each one of them, apparantly, you cannot jump version. And sure, I have 'phobia' about the version that requires user manuals document (36-5?). (I could be wrong on this one). There are sporadic reports that SSU update on N800 is NOT that smooth. Again, depends on how you look at things.

So far, my update is fine, I go thru flash, but now I gained more than I want. I need to plug my N800 2X a day, the battery would NOT last for more than 12 hr. I switched with a brand new Nokia battery, no dice. same problem :(

Reliability is not hardware-dependent. N800s and N810s will both update just fine as long as people don't screw around with their installs.

All osv's prior to 43-7 depended on the documentation.

Well, I speak from what I read. So far, ALL the reported SSU problems are from N800s, I have yet to see even ONE from N810. Can we say N800 owner 'screw around' more often than N810 owner? Or simply there are just MORE N800s around than N810? Anyhow, my N810 is still running 24-13, and I am NOT interested to go thru 30-2, 36-5 then 43-7, especially the reported 'reboot loop', I guess reflash is my only option.

Yes, preinstalled-documentation-rx*4. It weighs in at around 20MB and would cause SSU updates to fail when the system ran out of space while updating.

For better or worse, SSU wont even allow you to upgrade, "SSU features upgrade ..... RX44 documentations missing."

My N810 is running 24-13 on int flash and dual boot to 43-7. I made a clone from my N800 and stuck it in the N810. Interesting, uh?

Not particularly, no. They're the same hardware running practically the same software, of course swapping that software from one to the other will work.

I feel that battery life has improved. Visiting relatives, over the last few days I would have been bored to death without it*, so I'd be online from about 11am (using jabber/googletalk), rss reading, a bit of web browsing, and battery didn't run out till 9pm. Wifi set to moderate power saving, and wifi signal strength very good so I guess it was able to throttle back.

However, when I watched a few videos on videocenter the battery died within an hour!
