I remember friendly debates with friends about the future of converged portable devices. 10 years ago it was hard to imagine, having no cell phone and an old Jordana, that I would ever want something like the N900. But now I would consider any portable device without a network connection (be it cell or wifi or other) an anachronism, frankly. I'm hoping the N900 will truly be useful as a 'computer in my pocket', and thinking of it in that way was how I justified the price. I will also finally put my unlimited data plan to good use.

Looking forward to participating in many positive discussions as well.

Welcome, Moot-goner. I am eager to read the future N900 posts on this forum!

Hi. 5800 NAM owner here just preordered the N900 off Amazon. Been looking for a phone with good hardware specs and an open philosophy and from what I can see the N900 is the closest thing available right now (or at least soon). Now that I've found "THE PHONE" I'm obessed with trying to find out an actual release date that I can look forward to. Finally registered so I can stop lurking and join the conversation. (I'm rather opinionated lol)

Welcome, dccupp, to the forum. Your opinions mean a lot to us. After you get your N900 we want to hear (good and bad) about it!

Hello, I'm a big technology enthusiast and have followed Nokia's internet tablets for some while. I'm very excited about both Maemo 5 and the N900, I think they're a terrific step forward and will hopefully get one mid 2010 when I can upgrade (if it's available on Orange :( ).

I'm sure you meant N900. N90 is my favorite mobile of all time, though. Tank build quality and ahead of its time features.

Hello friends!
I am a 25 year old guy from Norway, who fell in love with the N900. I was planning on ditching my Nokia E60 for an Android phone, until I saw the (really slick) N900 videos. Hope to put my programming skills to good use on the Maemo platform, and contribute to the society here on maemo.org. I've been lurking for some time now, and figured its time to say hi.

See you around :)

Hello from maemo-noob from Finland. After reading thru 40 pages of a single thread in a row I thought I need to register. N900 will be my first tablet, coming from Nokia 9300 and E90, will be interested to see the new form factor for me. Thanks for having me and I hope to enjoy Maemo Talk even more after registering.

Greetings - this seems a great group - hope to be a useful member of it before too long.

I've been in software QA for years but am a newb on Maemo and recent Nokia devices.

I was patiently waiting for Palm to bring out my next smart phone upgrade, having been a loyal Palm/Treo user for years, (used to test Palm apps way back) but Palm lost me forever with the very disappointing Pre. So I was just about to cave and buy the lovely looking but rather expensive N97. Was going to get StyleTap Platform for Symbian to help transition me off the Treo. Then Nokia had to bring out the N900!

I wish the N900 had the same slide n tilt form factor as the N97, but the N900 specs are mostly so much better. The more I read about Maemo, the more interested I am in trying something new and learning like crazy so I can get involved.

I'm hoping the N900 will run Garnet VM (to wean me off a few Palm apps until more are available for the N900). But my many efforts to find out if it will function at all or if there's any chance Garnet VM will be ported to Maemo 5, have been fruitless so far.

I figure I have to try it myself and see. I can't wait for delivery confirmation from Amazon!

All the best...jow

You can access that section, too, koivjann. It just requires a separate registration right now. They're working on a single log in but it'll take time. Welcome to the t.m.o forums.

Another Newbie here!

I'm an RF (radio frequency) designer, in the past I've worked on handset designs for several companies, and also worked for Nokia on base station designs a few times.

Tried and hated WinMob so dropped back to my trusty Treo.

Acquired an N810 to learn a bit more Linux, now (im)patiently waiting for the N900 to appear!

I'm not new, but I've been lurking for many moons (I've been called an eminence gris a few times in my life...). I have never posted much (If I have nothing to add to a conversation, I don't, and honestly, the way things are around here, a simple search has answered many if not all of my questions before I bothered everyone with my ignorance :)

I am finally moved to put something in here because of what happened in another thread (http://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php?t=32253) which has profoundly moved me, and finally forced me to get off my *ss and do something. The community round here has shown itself in many ways, and none more powerful than this example, as strong and more than capable of supporting itself and its members. Kudos to you all. I fell, after this long time reading and thinking, that I know many of you already, so saying hello is the least I can do. I'd like to do more. We'll see.

It's possible to lurk for a long time, and in fairness I have been on and off with my n810 relationship (n900 ordered though...) for more reasons than just the device. I do have an idea for an app that because of the kickstart to my rear end I'm now actively working toward design and execution of (might take a while, but there you are - I'm not the coder many people around here are).

I'm happy to be able to say hello formally, and just perhaps now start to enter into the community as much as I can (which is all we can ask). Pleasure to meet you all.

Steve

Hello community!

This is my first intro to Maemo. Though many people do not know me yet, I have been reading these forum since day1 touching Maemo. Yet, I am as thrilling as you guys waiting for N900 coming.

There are many great developers motivating me to register, especially OneDotZero is a hit for me! I wish I could learn more from these people.

Open-source community is my long time friend. Debian Potato is my first Linux distro, and involved a few development projects on KDE (just for my joy). And trying to lure some friends to have fun with penguin (but most of my friends are FreeBSD alignment)!

'ow do.

I'm a long time Symbian user who's been longing for a device which can do everything the Series 5(mx) could do, as well as all the modern telephony/network/multimedia gubbins. I suspect the N900 may be all that and more, and will be getting my hands on one in the next few months. I may try my hand at the development side of life next year when some current work commitments permit, despite not having done any programming since some embedded device C stuff for my degree all those many moons ago. Till then I'll be popipng up with my ha'penn'orth on the way forward for other folks' efforts...

Re: New members say hello !

Should probably have shown my face in here before I started asking questions!

I never even heard of Maemo till yesterday. I might well have thought you were talking about a lost clownfish... I was saving up for an SE satio. Then I happened to spot a reference to something called n900.

And now I'm here. I believe in open source - though I'm not (ever) clever enough to be a developer or progammer. I am a great one for dreaming up ideas for what things can or can't do! Being a 'people' sort of person I'm more interested in what a thing can do with connecting people.

A long, long time ago I have something called a velo. Then, after a few pdas I discovered a treo 600 - and that's when I learned what an amazing community the developer network is. I'm glad to be here - if a little lost right now!

Hello from Finland/Ireland!

I have N810 at the moment, but I'm planning to buy N900 when I visit Finland in December. I can't wait! I do some application developement, but I've been lacking a good idea to turn into an application... So many ideas have already been fulfilled! ;-)

Now that i can finally reply to threads i d like to say hello.

I never owned a mobile, as i never really needed one (well thats quite unique in my acquaintance for a 35 year old male).
Following all the linux phones coming up in the last few years i thought there will be the perfect device coming, that will break my mobilelessity (new word i just created :) )

And then i read of the N900, and now cant wait getting it into my hands. I wait impatient for this toy.

Just to make it complete: I am build 1974 in germany, living near cologne.

Re: New members say hello !

A hi from me too. Been lurking on the board for about 2 weeks now, so time to introduce.

Have been a long time nokia fan and have been using S60 phones for a while now. Recently switched to a xperia X1 (windows mobile), bad experience with carkit compatibilty and other stuff too.

Then switched to my current phone, a samsung i8910. About the same hardware as the upcomming n900, killer screen , s60, etc.

Sadly enough, disapointed with the software samsung put on the phone. It's S60, and we know S60 is aged.... but at least nokia does a decent job in making it run well and as bug free as possible. The same can NOT be said for samsung. They hold features as a stupid 3D task switcher as more important then an actually correctly functioning bluetooth implementation or bugs and other irretating features in other places. So sad... but it's got to go!

So... the n900 seems like the ultimate device. My biggest worry with it, it SAP support. Or rather rSAP. I have a built in carkit which is only able to use that protocol and I do really need it. From what I understand in the bluez project, it is beying worked on. Hope to see it soon. Seeying it's nokia carkit and protocol... I would think it arrive pretty quickly. :)

Anyway. Hi there! Hope to make usefull contributions in the future! :)

Re: New members say hello !

Hi,

I've registered a little while ago but never took the time to say hello. So let's correct that.

I'm a software developer, currently living in Ireland but originally from France. I've been an unashamed smartphone geek ever since I got myself a Sendo X back in 2004 (or was it 2005 ? - I can't remember). I spent the last 6 years doing .NET development (some cool projects) in the education and financial sectors. Have also been helping out a few startup projects whenever I could.

Over the last two years though, I started to realize that smarpthone software is what I really wanted to do. It took me a while to bite the bullet (it's quite comfortable to get a regular salary) but I finally gave in and quit my job. The plan is to spend the next few weeks getting familiar with development on the iPhone, Symbian and Maemo platforms (thinking of Android and WebOS too of course but I'll start with the devices I already have), then see if I can find some freelance work while working on my own apps. We'll see what happens.

Bought an N810 a few months ago out of curiosity - this is what brought me here. I was actually pleasantly surprised with what the N810 could do and how relatively easy to use it was. Still definitely not a mainstream device though. The N900 on the other side looks just amazing. This is in fact the first time I've been excited about a new smartphone since the Nokia E61 some 3 years ago (which was my first phone with a proper keyboard, proper big screen, proper web browser and wifi). Spending £500 on a N900 wouldn't be sensible at all given that I just left my job but I'm pretty sure I won't be able to resist... Plus I've got the excuse of needing one to do some development for it ;)

I'll be at the Maemo Summit at the week-end so I'll probably see a few of you guys there. Looking forward to it. Also hope to be able to contribute a bit to the Maemo world.

Re: New members say hello !

Hello. I am adam917 from Philly. I have known about Maemo for a while and though it was cool to see an open mobile OS for once but held off buying any device due to the lack of a GSM/UMTS phone stack & SIM slot. I was ecstatic upon hearing about the N900 that is to be released soon and more recently, I found out that we have a new ISP player in town called Clear that has soft-launched WiMAX here. I am thinking of getting the N810 WiMAX Edition if it is worth getting. I heard a few other cities have WiMAX and so it could come in handy if I can roam whilst out of town.

I now hope to see more Maemo stuff being released in the future. :-)

Re: New members say hello !

Hi guys!

Im adding another swede to the mix :)

Been developing apps for the various smart-phones (iphone, palm, ovi, etc) for about a year now, so Im pretty fed up with all the compromises you have to accept due to the limited format and technology.

But this platform seems to have all the technical qualities I want in a phone (albeit not the openess of android to other manufacturers than nokia), and comes closest to a real computer.

In sum, it appeals to the tech-nerd in med :P

Also, Ive always put off getting into linux but this platform gives me a reason to get into it for sure.

Hopefully I can learn a lot from this community and ultimately become a contributor as well.

Cya around,
- Daniel
