I haven't seen any alternative suggestions recently in this thread.

It's been a fairly small group of us discussing this. I'm sure plenty of people don't really care one way or the other, but we might get more input if someone posted to Planet Maemo.

To be honest, the raccoon is too cutesy/commonplace for my taste, and it's not exactly a popular animal (in places where they live). They eat garbage and maim people's pets.

Also, I think there's something to be said for having a mascot be a more unusual/memorable animal. I much prefer my narwhal idea :) but maybe qole and I are the only ones.

While I'm not opposed to the raccoon... I would definitely vote narwhal :D

OK, we'll have a vote some time next week on all the suggestions. (If that's okay... sorry, didn't want to sound like that was my decision, just thought someone should organise something.)

I actually don't have any preferences at this point. The "tube sock of the whale family" would be an easy plushie to make, though!

Is this official? or unofficial? Council???

If this is official, there should probably be submission location, and it should be raised to higher visibility. Additionally there would need to be some time to allow people a week or two to come up with some ideas submissions. This should not be decided by a few people in a thread, after a week.

If this is an unofficial mascot, I still want to finish my owl, so can we vote like in a week?

Raccoons are known carriers of rabies, canine distemper, encephalitis, histoplasmosis, trypanosomiasis, coccidiosis, toxoplasmosis, tularemia, tuberculosis, listeriosis, leptospirosis, roundworms and mange. They are also infested with fleas, ticks, lice and mites which are known transmitters of disease. Children and pets are particularly at risk.

Narwhals, meanwhile, are known to be made of win.

How about we just shoot the raccoon.

I definitely need more time to make something else.

Man I just got him where I really liked him too..

And personally, I DONT WANT A NARWHAL

I much prefer no logo to a Narwhal

Not official at all, AFAIK this whole process is all just for fun. :-)

Of course if someone in a position of some kind of authority wants to make this official...

I'm OK with the raccoon, even if they make me fear for my cat and made me modify the cat door since they used to come in and eat her food. I think I preferred the raccoon with one eye shut, which disappeared from the drawings a while ago.

I'm OK with the narwhal, too. Probably prefer it. Anyone want to do more drawings of it?

But I wonder, Stupid Little Genius, if you have any inclination to try your hand at the woodpecker.

Aye Aye, a type of lemur

http://images.google.com/images?q=aye+aye

Due to its bizarre appearance and unusual feeding habits, it is considered by many to be the strangest primate in the world. It is the world's largest nocturnal primate.

http://lemur.duke.edu/animals/ayeaye/general.jpg

Aye-Aye's are a nocturnal species and must be provided with things to chew on because of their continuously growing front teeth. Their middle finger is 6 inches long!! Even though they look kind of scary, they are believed to be a bad omen in Madagascar and are unfortunately killed because of that.

Reasons to pick the Aye Aye

1) it is considered by many to be the strangest primate in the world.

No, I think I beat out King Julian there as the 'strangest primate'. Good try, though!

Gnome has a mascot, it should be obvious what it is. You just never see him (you're not supposed to see them); all you ever see is his footprints.

Thinking more about this ... he must be one-legged, or he has two right feet ... I never see a left footprint!

Please consider my Opabinia too! It's a fascinating beast. Also try the Hallucigenia or the Anomalocaris.
I bet no project yet has ever had a cambrian sea animal as a mascot.

I'm not sure what "official" would exactly entail. I'd say keep it for fun: there's no need for the council to "meddle". If it gets used, it gets used - it's not in the council's power to mandate people use it. That'd just smack of authoritarianism.

As for including it as part of the website branding, or other "official"ness, there'd probably be Nokia to get involved as owners of the Maemo trademark. Best leave that battle for another day, methinks.

Yup, totally agree.

This is more of a mascot festival rather than mascot contest. :-)

Nobody was asking council to mandate anything. I think it was more, should maemo have a mascot, should there be a contest similar to the maemo logo contest. I personally would like to see an official mascot, for the project, but thats up to YOU to get Nokia involved if you think it would be a good idea.

So the question went out to Council, should we have an official mascot? (Not will you make everyone use a Raccoon or a Narwhal)

Whatever design you agree on, be sure to let Stupid Little Genius have a go at it !

@ Stupid Little Genius :

Don't let them make you modify your designs to much, they might lose some of their personality.
