First of all, Great job on your testing and feedback. Much thanks. I am patiently waiting too since I left the WinMo world. I quietly hoping it will come soon because I WAS SO CLOSE TO SMASHING MY N900 while navigating with OVI map. I guess I am spoiled by GARMIN.

Anyway, you will likely file the file structure using xterm. Use "cd" to change directory and "ls" to listing items OR you can install the app emelFM2 (not sure from which depository) to help you locate it.

By the way, keep up the good work.:D

ok I am looking around with xterminal. any ideas in what directory it is likely to be?

Re: Sygic announces world-wide turn-by-turn navigation for Maemo

Since they are complaining that the free space is low - probably in /opt/[sygic or something]. This partition is limited to 2GB.

I don't quite understand why they are not using the bigger partition, maybe because its vfat and deb packages don't like it. Well, we can always symlink them in there if the space runs too low.

I like the separate packages though - this way I won't have to pay for countries I don't plan going to anytime soon (and I can pay afterwards if I need to go there).

i think even ovi maps uses the bigger vfat partition for map storage... They'd be a bit silly if they don't use the vfat partition...

For the australians and new zealanders I see that when you go to buy now the option for australia and newzeland doesn come up.

That is good news indeed!

Re: Sygic announces world-wide turn-by-turn navigation for Maemo

Ok for the Australians out and about thinking of using this.
This is the responce from Sygic, I really was hoping they would have done something that makes the standard maps available to all devices.

>

Hello,

Maps from Australia are not available at this moment. Nokia N900 is selling only in USA and Europe. As soon as it will be available in Australia we bring Australia maps.

Thank you for contacting support and for your interest in our products.

Best regards

I was really hoping to grab this for Australia :(

wooot?

What does it has to do with where the phone sells??
Stupid thing is, most of the time i dont need to use navigation in my own country.. sometimes it is nice but the times that i use it are spare.

When do i use it... if i am on vacation or on a bus.trip in another country.

For example this year i will go to South Africa for the WordCup i need navigation there.. But N900 is not being sold there so no navigation? Why??

DaSilva 2010-01-21 09:52

Re: Sygic announces world-wide turn-by-turn navigation for Maemo

Yeah, I think the same.

btw: I wonder who will be the best word team in the world this year at the WordCup ;)

3 Attachment(s)
Ok, the structure is in opt as someone mentioned earlier.

It has 3 directories
Drive, Maps, Res

Forgive the commands (Windows user here) as I attempt to display the directories. I have taken screencaptures instead.

Thanks cardiff-blues, it looks like they use the same format like for every other platform. Is there a big irl.pak in /home/opt/sygic/Maps/irl ?
How did you get the application? As a single .deb file?

So disappointing!! :(
Maybe OVI maps will be our saviour after all.

Well like someone mentioned before,
They now have Australian maps listed as available when its released.

So I have no idea, told one thing and I see another. :p

I'm still happy it has Australia listed :D

Re: Sygic announces world-wide turn-by-turn navigation for Maemo

I also wrote to Sygic asking about Brazil maps and they answer the same thing: as long the phone officially starts to be sold there we will make it available.

I replied mentioning that they commercial advantage is exactly to be the first company to launch Voice Guided GPS SW for N900, which current owners can mostly be classified as Early Adopters. I guess there are many others like me that imported the phone before it sells on their countries. I also completed that they should cash in before Nokia launches Ovi Maps for free.

Judging by today announcement that Ovi Maps services will be free worldwide, BUT no plans for N900 so far, I guess Sygic already knew that...

I really hope I am wrong, but all facts suggest that Sygic will be the ONLY alternative for N900 owners that need a decent GPS guidance SW, at least during this year.

Re: Sygic announces world-wide turn-by-turn navigation for Maemo

Quick update.
When I was applying some updates to my n900 earlier a sygic one also came down. Over 220 MB. Quick observations and it I think there may be one or two enhancements. Something I don't remember being there under settings was a Radar alert. I'm not sure if that is just a stationary speed camera alert or mobile as well.

I'll test tomorrow to see if I have any further lag issues or other.

jcompagner 2010-01-21 23:17

Re: Sygic announces world-wide turn-by-turn navigation for Maemo

sygic logic is really twisted if you ask me.
I guess somebody should tell them that navigation is mostly used by people who dont know directions in the area they are in. And when does that happen the most if you are on vacation because then you are in an area that you dont know..

So to say that the N900 must be sold there before it supports it is a wrong assumption/conclusion.

On my E90 i used Nokia/Ovi maps 1.0->3.0 the in many countries and continents over the last 2 - 2.5 years. the usage in my home country is very low compared to the other countries...

cardiff-blues 2010-01-22 19:20

Re: Sygic announces world-wide turn-by-turn navigation for Maemo

I couldn't test today because after the update a map update came down this morning and it doesn't successfully load into the application so I have no maps in there at the moment.

Re: Sygic announces world-wide turn-by-turn navigation for Maemo

that's too bad....you should contact sygic and straighten this out...it would be a disaster if this update was pushed to ACTUAL user.

Good to hear that the gps application is coming to the n900. Initially I was dissapointed that ovimaps prob isn't coming to the n900. But I can live with this app if the price is right.

Just waiting for it to come out to make my choice as to weather I buy the n900.

Did you have lagging problem like the other tester? The other tester experience lags when the app announce to turn left or right (so the driver may miss the turn already). Let's hope that is just a single incident. Thanks for that screen. Looks awesome. Can't wait.

VeR 2010-01-23 01:04

Re: Sygic announces world-wide turn-by-turn navigation for Maemo

I had no problems like lagging etc. But what I miss in this version, is button to minimanise sygic (for example in top left corner). Searching is fast, such as track calculating. I was very supprised, when my N900 has full GPS signal in less than 15 seq. Nokia have done their homework ;)

Some more Screens :

http://img412.imageshack.us/img412/4...0012221085.png

And this is like it should be in my opinion :

http://img145.imageshack.us/img145/826/sygic1.png

1. I Need this button
2. Some of options are not corretly translated to some languages.

Re: Sygic announces world-wide turn-by-turn navigation for Maemo

GPS signal in 15 sec...NICE!...but I imagine that's with network location (you have data service)?

ANyway, looks like it is shaping up to be quite nice. As for the minimize app, have you try the CameraKeyd app....use the camera key to switch between app...see how well those two works....

VeR 2010-01-23 11:06

Re: Sygic announces world-wide turn-by-turn navigation for Maemo

AGPS (based on network) was turned OFF! Thats amazing :) Cam key works, i can switch between app, but it's a bug - not something that is made by developer of sygic. There should be something on the screen to easily tap it and change apps.

what do you mean with not something that is made by sygic?
If a program goes into full screen then it is the programs responsibility to create that button.

VeR 2010-01-24 14:53

Re: Sygic announces world-wide turn-by-turn navigation for Maemo

i think that sygic should make any button to switch between apps. We shouldn't use camkey or powerbutton.

Just got an email from them and they said they will be releasing Australian maps :) and it should be out very soon :D

Good news all around. I'm pretty happy this and other commercial vendors are looking at Maemo as a viable OS to sell products on.

Update:

Just noticed a new update of the software in the last few days and in Route Settings you can now have a Pedestrian Route or a Bicycle Route.

A nice touch me thinks as I was only trying to use it last Friday in London to find a location while walking.

cardiff-blues 2010-01-25 11:41

Re: Sygic announces world-wide turn-by-turn navigation for Maemo

Another update:
You can now set a Maximum Speed warning notification noise. That is very useful indeed so that you do not have to keep looking at your speedometer while driving on the motorway. The default setting is 62MPH. (Yeah right!)
