DO NOT CHARGE FIRST THEN TURN ON YOUR N900!
Why? I don't think the charger has anything to do with it. Some people said they charged it before turning it on, and their microphone is dead, and others (like me) didn't charge it and the microphone is still dead.

And why would a charger break the microphone, and ONLY the microphone? Doesn't make any sense.

I'm not a betting man, but in this case I would be willing to bet a substantial amount of money on saying that charging the device first will have nothing at all to do with the mic problem. So, you should charge it before using it, thus nicely avoiding the risk of a dead battery before you're even started (and that is a tricky one to get out of, as I posted earlier).

I'm just trying pin point the issue and this seems like the cause from what people been reporting (all I've talked to with defected mic had charged up before turning on for the first time)

Well when yours come, charge it for a while then turn on and call. Prove me wrong ;)

I would go as far as earthing yourself by touching the radiator before you touch your N900. Why do you think the tech guys (fixing laptops etc) wear those equipments to earth themself?

Considering the N900 mainly made of plastic, rather be safe than sorry mate.

hmmm static electricity
brought my memory back to the school days doing this experience
how they asked us to step on a bunch of plastic trays then touch the 'magic ball'

plastic trays you say? isn't the N900 mainly made of plastic? no metal on the body i believe
hmm could static electricity build up and n900 issues be related?

Most of us don't ;)

I would say the microphone problem hasn't got ANYTHING to do with charging, or static.

Never heard of a defect product? :S

I haven't got the actual device yet (still waiting my pre-order from MPD) so I don't know what programs are available, but someone mentioned alsamixer.

Could you check to see if 'alsaconf' is also available, if it is then someone with a defective mic, try to run 'alsaconf' as a root user to see if it's just an alsa configuration problem.

EXACTLY . ONLY stupid people think of something like "charge the phone 1st and you'll mess it up or your phone got "electricshock" from your body" . What on earth are you talking about. Those have nothing to do with N900 issues. IT IS A DEFECT UNIT. They ALWAYS recommend you to fully charge your phone before using it, IDIOTS.

Make sure to ALWAYS wear gloves when using your N900 okay.

Re: N900 no mic audio

Static will damage sensitive devices like transistors and will easily kill some devices like MOSFET. However, it's not that easy. Firstly, when soldered onto something conductive, devices become less sensitive to static because the conductor around them takes some of the punishment.
Also, circuit designers aren't *****s. There is similar phenomena (i think it's called transient state in english) when something changes in a circuit (like disconnecting a load), which can produce similar spikes in current. Damn i'm technical. The idea is the circuits are somewhat protected from discharges.
Furthermore: plastic is an insulator. It shields from static. Sure, when charged enough it will become a hazard, but it's not that easy to do it accidentally. That's why you had to stand on plastic things in the experiment: to prevent the electricity going to the ground when you touched the magic (charged) ball
Even more: the mic is tucked inside. Static has a tendency to jump for the nearest conductive surface. The screen is somewhat conductive (remember that it works by changing resistance, so it can't be a perfect insulator), the discharge would kill it more easily.
Bottom line: it's not technically impossible to fry the transistor/amplifier (not the mic itself - those are sturdy), but it's more likely that evil gremlins dismantled your device mid-shipping and replaced the mic with alien eggs

Anyone have a similar problem or heard of this problem before ?? searched, but nothing.

To resolve Ive tried the following without any luck:-

- Flashed standalone
- Flashed NSU
- Call recorder software does not pickup anything up
- Phone works with headphones
- Mute / unmute doesnt do anything

Annoyed or what. Any suggestions ? Thanks

Considering you're the second person replying to a post that is entitled 'N900 no mic audio' obviously their is another person who is having the same issue as yourself. Seriously dude, you might want to read the actual OP before asking 'does anyone else have this issue' when it is so blatantly obvious.

I think there was two threads that was merged and therefore two posts with simular content. What's the point of your post anyway?

Well, no it wasn't. MaemoExperts hadn't seen this thread, so that post was the first in anew one, which then got merged into this one. So it wasn't obvious to him/her when they made that post. Sadly, vBulletin doesn't edit post content to fit into a new thread.

Do I gather it's been settled this is a hardware fault and needs rplacing? No luch on the software attempts?

Hi guys, thought I'd stop by to say I received my N900 this morning. Just a pity I'm posting in this thread. As you may be able to guess, I've got the same mic problem! Still sounding like a hardware fault then. hmm great fun after the wait. Oh well, such is life I suppose.

Sorry to hear that.

Can you let us know how you turn on your phone?
Charge first then turn on
Or turn on without charging and found the issue immediately?

Re: N900 no mic audio

Well all i did was get it out and begin to play with it straight from the box with no problems AT ALL. The only trouble i'm having is navigating around the thing.

Hi, I decided to just turn it on after the manual said it would have charge & wasn't quite sure where we stood with the best way to try it. Anyway! When I got in, first thing I did was make a call and notice the mic issue. I then confirmed it with recording a video.

For added info, mine is 15415 leaving out the last digit if that is right.

I've just been trying to get through to Nokia Care, but no luck so far - there appears to be a huge queue - with the message "Due to the success of our recent products our phone lines are busy" - or something to that effect.

I assume that must be all the people phoning the support number to congratulate them?!?!

sorry to hear that Ads, I can imagine what you must be feeling after the long wait !

maybe we must all go and make a request to the Nokia flagship shop to have these defective products recalled and replaced with a fresh batch.

Now after I heard that "when you charge the phone" theory is now no saver , this is really dissapointing, for god sakes ! this was supposed to be a flagship product and a new venture for Nokia , they are screwing up big time !

And also from 3 users who can't get the N900 to work?
Nokia never officially say it's not supported 3 when they buy it, only those who read around will find out.

Re: N900 no mic audio

Yeah it's definitely a tad annoying. It'll be interesting to hear Nokia's viewpoint on this. Though I'm not sure if we will.
I got through to Nokia in the end and they have raised my call up to the next tier - I'm assuming a more technical bod.
I take it the others on here with the same issue have gone the same route?
The first guy got me to do a reset to factory defaults and I don't think he could do much more from there. So I'm waiting for another call.

So by the sounds of it, they may be trying to look into what might fix it - or it's the standard route even if they haven't got a clue.

One of the most annoying things about this is the hassle it tends to involve. It's bad enough trying to get the first delivery, let alone potentially sending it back etc!

she actually promised less than 10 working days but she said it should be quicker because they have devices reserved for things like this and it would be more like 2 days to mail it to them 2 days to process and 2 days to send a new one. so if i mail it on monday i should receive the following tuesday.
