hi first post ever and probably first stupid question.

I've managed to get carman running on my N900 but cant seem to get it to connect to the internal gps could someone please help me as i want to test the maps on a trip out this weekend

can this thing eventually calculate average fuel consumption and mileage left assuming there is a way for me to key in the estimated amount of fuel left in the tank when i startup carman?

Reading the required values through obd would be quite cool to have in Fuelpad. I am not sure if it is possible but if someone shows that it is and also sends me a bluetooth obd reader, I might take a look (I am the author of Fuelpad) :)

do i need to put anything else in xterm when i type this?

ie sudo gainroot or somthing as when i try this line of code it says /home/user/.carman/carmand not found?

Ah, I love your app. Not many of these fuel apps can take care of my needs and do the conversions for me (metric cluster and mileage but use US fuel/vol/mass).

I think the previous version of carman for Nokia 770 could do that as it was giving information about hundreds of OBD sensors. This version doesn't show many things.

Successfully installed Carman on my N900 (10.2010.19-1),
but when Carman starts up, it gives an error message about "No plugins found", and then goes in a mode where the only choice that works is exit. It doesn't allow me to configure my OBDII device or anything...

Any ideas/suggestions?

Look back in this thread, as there is a fix, I rebooted before I saw the fix and that worked for me.

You will also need to edit /home/user/.carman/carmand.conf and change the line gps=none to gps=internal before you reboot.

I installed Carman this morning (then rebooted!) at breakfast over tea and toast, and paired it with my odb bluetooth dongle, and it ran perfectly for the hour long commute to work.

Only issue is the onscreen overlayed switcher icon/button thingy does not work, so I need to determine what the keboard shortcut is to bring up the taskswitcher/dashboard.

Be nice if this could be looked at as an issue. Not sure where to post (if anywhere) as a bug though.

For the GPS problem, that it stays on after you close Carman, I found that if you go back to Carman and disconnect from the GPS it will actually stop the GPS so no restart is required.

i used the vi text editor in xterm to edit ths file, but that's probably a bit too linux hardcore. if you fancy a go though....

open xterm and enter the following commands
vi /home/user/.carman/carman.conf

use the arrow keys to navigatge to the start of the text you want to edit.

press the x key to delete each character one at a time

press I (has to be upper-case) to change vi into insert mode. the cursor will go to the start of the line.

use the arrow keys to navigate to the position

enter the new text, then press esc on the toolbar to exit insert mode

enter the following characters :wq (colon, then w for write/save and q for quit)

vi is daunting at first but is ok once you know what is going on, and is on just about every unix system there is so kis a very useful skill to have.

Thanks for the reply gaz, i tried this before i read your post, but didnt save it, and now carman wont open at all on my phone? should i uninstall it then follow these steps or just go ahead and give this a shot?

Edit: i tried,

Sudo gainroot
ls -a
cd .carman
vi carmand.conf

edited the text and then, saved following your instructions.

tho i still cant access carman anymore, it tried to load then dispears.

Any ideas?

sounds initally like a typo in the file somewhere. recheck it carefully, and if you don't see anything, copy and paste the file contents.

also try stafrting carfman from the command line inxterm, by typing carman, and copy and post the results.

Just to report that I bought this device on eBay and works fine with Carman. The code is 1234.

hi just wondering i have installed carman and changed the line of code to internal. rebooted my phone and it worked fine however once i exited and re-entered the app it no longer connects to gps or allows me to select the gps to turn on manually any ideas? was working fine first time. cheers in advance

i cant install or remove carman from my n900 now, it comes up...

Thanks, I edited the file with FileBox, and check after editing: it's correctly write "internal" when I open the file again, but when I reboot, it's come back to "none" after launching Carman, or if I try to configurate the gps, it only allow me to check blutooth devices around me and that's all!
And after that the line in the file become something like this: "gps_device=00:21:04:B8:49:58"!!!
What should Carman propose for "configurate GPS"??
And there's a mistake in post 178: it's the file carmand to edit, not carman, correct?

Edit: editing the file with vi worked today!!!:D
And my GPS fix now!

i'm curious, other data like boost pressure (for turbo engines), fuel consumption, etc - are these not available from OBD? can we modify carman to read more information from the bluetooth dongle?

i've seen some python libraries that were written to talk to bluetooth OBD interfaces...

Have you tried starting the engine? Although it should not be necessary, in my Renault Scenic 2000 it would report strange and fluctuating values before starting the engine.

On my Ford Fiesta 2001 it works well even with the engine stopped...

I tried with engine on, engine off contact on, contact off: same way...
My car is out for the week (paint...:rolleyes:) so I tried with a loan Ford Fiesta 2010 diesel: doesn't work anymore, but arrows on screen didn't disappear, as on my car...:confused:
I think this OBD2 don't work with Carman...:(

None at all. It works fine so far in both cars.

My only "concern" is what I mentioned in this post: http://talk.maemo.org/showpost.php?p...&postcount=193

But it's IMHO more a car problem than a device problem.

Hi,
I did a clean install of PR1.3. I'm installing all my fav bits but carman reports broken packages.
Is this something I need to change on my end or is it a PR1.3 thing?

Hey gyz very interested in this app for my n900,
i work on cars alot (apprentice Mechanic) and find that this may be helpfull wif tuning
i feel kinda stupid for asking but i have tryed to find carman in the apps manager (i have disabled all but Extras devel) and am unable to find it...
i am currently using my bt obd/obd2 to y laptop but it bulky as...

where and how do i download/install this??
not particularly worried bout gps functions

Taito how did you get your gps working i have followed the
Sudo gainroot
ls -a
cd .carman
vi carmand.conf

and i get alot of text but nothing saying gps=none were i could then change to gps=internal any help guys would be great
