SHOWTIME v1.2

1 Attachment(s)
Keeping the feedback in mind, here is the improved version of Showtime now.
Showtime v1.2 has the following updates now
  • Current Mode :: this modes show the tv channel listings for all selected channels running currently ( current time +/- 1hr )
So now you have 3 modes to use the app
    • daily mode
    • search mode
    • current mode
  • You can select as many channels you want and hit the GO button just once to get all the data.
Seems like many users wanted this option as they didnt want to click on GO for each channel seperately :). Pls note there will be an obvious time lag as now we will be reading mutliple xmltv files and not just one. Ive added a progress indicator to help know the progress.
  • fixed the issue of special characters being blocked out for sweden, poland, netherlands and some other regions.
  • some other minor updates, like typos, programme end time offset for UK, etc.

Screenshots are here

Note::all your settings and files will be removed in this update due to the enhancements. However for future minor versions this wont happen.

Some effort has been made to make a lovely colorful user guide (attached) ;), please please go through it before using the software. If you still have questions or need clarifications I'm happy to answer/clarify them here.

Thanks to all those who gave feedback and tested/voted for this app, but the more the better so we will have even more coming forward to test/vote.so keep the votes coming please :)

Finally special thanks to all the people who appreciated the effort and made a donation towards the project.

I used the MSN scraper to check out the XML file that it created. It does so by Postal code.

It seems like you would have to do a lot of these to cover multiple Postal Codes?

It also produces just one XML file for the Postal code, is that correct?

Great update dude. :)
It' almost perfect now IMHO.

Would it be possible to include a filter so that, for example, only movies, series or shows can access them? Furthermore, it would be nice if in the settings an opportunity to change the language there.

I want to install this to check it out. Can someone give me some SAT TV info as if I were in London to use as Setup info?

I'm trying to cobble the stuff together here to be able to use this in the US.

SKY UK is one of the major providers in the UK.
you could refer to their website for channel listings.
Or even Virgin Media another provider.
see if that helps ?

Suggestion: In current mode, show which channel the program is airing on. Also, will you make something like a TV-guide with 5 programs listed vertically in the future?

The detail info ( 'i' button )provides the channel name.

I wont promise this, but Ill see if it can be done.
during my development I had tried enabling vertical and horizontal scrolling but it was very difficult to scroll and operate in my opinion and there was considerable lag. The option you say will load the n900 quite a bit and it would collect less points for usability, ive tried my best to keep the app as fast as possible.
However, i'll keep the request in mind, and if I find a way to change the layout for the better I will :), but you should know that means its a redesign of the complete GUI, lot of effort :(, I could put that in for another exciting app ;)

Yeah, I guess. I pretty much watch five different channels only so a fixed-height list would do the trick for me.. But it would be the best to do a variable height list, I guess ;)

Thanks for a great app.

Assuming you have a TV-card in your computer you should be able to use Orb to watch live TV. I have never tried it though.

+1 (to "showing which channel"). Could do it with a smaller font below the show's title or in the time info part of the row.

Looking better and better by the way, liking the way this app is going. The "favourites" feature for channels works much better since the most recent update btw.

There's still a bit of UI ugliness (well, could be better-ness) about some things, I'm making notes as I notice things/think of ways to make it better (without just creating a huge list of new features that "would be nice").

Weekly/daily series would be great to have repeating reminders in the calendar for btw, but thats all Im going to list for "new feature" ideas.
  • IMO, there are too many buttons on the app menu. 10? Really? Who needs to use "Region" more than once ever? It should go in the Settings dialog, which it should prompt you for at first ever run (does it? I forgot). I also think "Clear Cache" will be used rarely enough (once the app is stable) to move into a subview/dialog, or cached stuff should be cleared automatically (with a setting for how long to keep it, maybe.. if desired enough).
  • All the "daily mode"/"search mode"/"current mode" strike me as things that should be more easily accessible in the main screen without opening up the menu, particularly "search"; but I dont use this enough to feel strongly about it.
  • Some of the screens have the "return to main screen" back arrow as an arrow on the screen. eg "i" program info (which I havent seen working yet). Surely for the N900, in a hildon style, that "return" arrow should be in the top right where the 'X' normally is.
  • Can it please remember what channel selection and mode it was using (including if it was on "favourites") when you start it up next time. Including, if it was in "current" mode, an update to show the current time's shows not start off at the day's 1st listing info like it does now.
  • The red text that says there's no data, (temporary text Im sure) should perhaps be centered in the display with a button below it to click to clear the cache/reload (although reload is already there with "Go" to its right, new users might not think to look there tho).
  • You could remove "PICK" text for the buttons "Pick date" and "pick channels". If there are buttons with just "channels" and the current date on them, it should be obvious (not just to me I hope!) what pressing them will do.

Some part of me thinks even having the "Go" button is extraneous; if I select a date/time/channels, I probably want to see the data so it should just load it. Reasons against this? (apart from accessing data without an explicit request). Then could just have a "reload" button (even placed in the menu, maybe, if its less needed, or an online/offline status-bar like indicator).

In short no, not yet. My post #1 is always updated with latest info, so you neednt read the whole thread for features/support. :)

les_garten also from Florida( I think, from his location) is trying to setup xmltv files for the US.
He has managed to do it for his postcode I think by scraping msn.
Maybe you can work together with him to setup xmltv files, then I can integrate region USA as well.

I couldnt find any free sites that provide xmltv files in the US.

Hi, very nice program and fast progress. Would it be possible for Favorites to include stations from different regions? Croatian stations (HTV) are often viewed in Slovenia.

sure I can, just let me know if you know of a weblink from where xmltv files can be downloaded for channels broadcast in Ireland. Ill try to look around too when I find some time.
Btw, ive seen some channels in the UK region like BBC Ireland, but I suppose you already had a look and it doesnt have most of them.

Quick question, when Meego is released, will you make a version for that too? (And eventually drop support for Maemo 5, if Nokia pushes an update for the N900 which change the OS to Meego).

EDIT: I realized that people still might use Maemo 5 even after that... My bad.

Ive been doing all my applications keeping Meego/Harmattan in mind.
They are all QT4.6 based so they should run on meego with no issues AFAIK. :)

thanks a mill. all of the irish channels are already there such as rte 1, tv3 etc. the only thing that needs to be implemented is the record via text number. this should be 53759. also if you could put the irish channels on the top of the channel list, that would be great. the irish channels are rte1 rte2 tv3 TnaG and 3e....
thanks again!

Ive had a look, seems like the source doesnt have BBC2 Wales :(.
Sorry not much I can do about it, but Ill think and see if I can provide some workaround along with the next minor update Im planning which is soon.

*EDIT* the old source which I had used for the UK had it, but the new one which has a lot more channels for the UK unfortunately misses this one out. Have to see how the app can be made to support multiple sources generating data on different dates and frequency.

Showtime has been updated ( v1.2-2 ) with a few changes and some feedback implemented.

Summary of changes for Showtime version 1.2-2.
* Added Ireland to the list of supported countries.
* Added a default operation mode in the setting ( screenshot attached )
* Added the channel name to the current mode listing.

Ive updated the first post with this information like other updates, so you will find the consolidated feature list on the first post itself.

You can click on the thumbs up here to vote if you have tested/used the app without any issues.

Thanks for voting and providing feedback.

Do you mean show the details of the programmes in a different language ?
Whatever information the data sources have is what you get to see for your region, unfortunately the app does not translate this into different languages , that was not the intention :).

now repackaged for PR1.2 and promoted. http://maemo.org/packages/package_in...howtime/1.2-3/
Please test/vote by clicking the link above to promote this app to extras.

app website : http://showtime.passiongarage.co.uk

P.S.
I tried repackaging the old version that has enough votes to make it to extras.
But due to unexplainable issues with the repository Im not able to repackage simply by linking to the PR1.2 qt libs and Ive lost all the votes now !
Ive mailed the debmaster hope I get some replies for that.
The newer version above has many more features and performance improvements.

thanks.

Holy cow, I don't know why I haven't seen this app before, but this must be my favorite app of them al already. It does exactly what it should do, it does it fast and easy, and best of all: it supports Belgium!

When I go to the page where I should be able to vote, it displays the message that promotion is blocked. Is this normal?

New version 1.2-4 uploaded to the repository.

Added support for 2 additional regions
Slovakia
Czech Republic.

Thanks to Pavol Palaj who provided the data source. I dont know his maemo talk id.

Also as mentioned to Pavol already, this data source contains many funny characters, Showtime displays them as it is.
Showtime downloads data for slovakia/czech from http://frantisheq.sk/xmltv/sk/CET_sk.xmltv

If somebody has better data sources Im happy to update them.

Request users who have already used this app to vote here, 5 votes needed to push this to extras.
Thanks to those who have voted.

for those who havent tried the app, details are on its website

This app would be better if it connected to the internet and provided us with the air times of a specific tv series in that country and then we could just add it to the list and it would update automatically if the air date and time changes.
Forget adding the times and everything urself, too much work. Apps should do the work for you!

In meantime im gonna pass on this 1

I'm looking for some new testers for getting more votes and cleaning the testing QA queue, so I've created a "starting list" for newcomers with some apps to test, and I've inserted Showtime, because I think it should be easy to test and to use.

Hope that will help testing and improving this nice app. See my signature for the testing list, we are looking for new testers!

had fixed this issue, dont know if there are still issues with the data source Im using. I'll need to check on this later and I'll report what I see.
Its perhaps something to do with the daylight saving which the data source doesn't cater for .

http://www.xmltvepg.be/rytecxmltvuk.gz is the UK channel listing source.

I'll have a look later in the day today and let you know what the issue is and when it can be rectified.
