List of proposals
1) NITbian
2) SymbiaNIT
3) SymbiaN900
4) Symbiaemo //a bit modified
5) Maebian //too
6) NITSymbian
7) NITymbian
8) SymNIT
9) Symbian4N900
10) Maebian
11) N900bian

Tell which really suck, tell which are the best, as I wann a leave 4-6 good proposition.
If you think yours was great and should be in this list (some such as symo are not so memorable - I'd associate it with "sumo" :D)

You have two Maebian, one should be Maembian.

I vote for 1, 3, 8 and Maembian :)

Nokia abandoned Symbian...
Nokia abandoned Maemo...
Nokia says that will not launch more devices with meego...

Why would you want to port a dead platform to N900?

Why not porting EPOC instead?:eek::rolleyes::p

NITdroid can already get Whatsapp working. And I too have no idea if this thread is serious or not. Nobody's actually you know, done anything. Maybe marmistrz is distracted by planning for his 13th birthday or something.

ok why not instead of being a troll just go ditch yourself instead? If it's happening or it will fail then it will be. At least someone made a freaking effort doing this than the likes of you filling up maemo's vbulletin database with 3 kilobytes of your useless replies.

There are a number of reasons why would anyone want to run symbian on n900. One of the main reasons is so we could run all the thousand apps from symbian on our n900 admit it symbian has a handful of apps compared to n900. Nobody can deny it.

If you still insist then give me ngage & garmin maps on maemo ;)

If you consider coming up with a list of 10 possible names "effort" than you & I have a difference of opinions.

Guy, stop that! I'm older! :D
I DIDN'T SAY I'LL DO IT ALONE. I NEED SOME PEOPLE TO COLLABORATE! AT LEAST A SYMBIAN SPECIALIST! then it may come real but alone it won't

Well, please do not start a thread with "Announce" unless you've got something to release or atleast until sufficient work is done.
Please take a look in the forums and learn how this forum works.
I've noticed that almost every thread you open begins with "Announce". This clearly shows that you're new to the community and dont know how this forum works. Moreover your other statements in your previous threads suggest you're new to maemo too. And you have even clearly mentioned in one of your posts that you dont have any experience with Symbian and havent even used it once.
If you've already started work on your project, you can let the community know it with a thread starting with "WIP" or Work in progress. Announce it only when you've got something to show off to the general audience here.

Now coming back to topic, just because you got the source code doesnt mean that its just a matter of compiling it and voila! Its done!
Its not like coding in school. Just because I learnt C & C++ in school and learnt how to compile basic applications like a calculator doesnt mean compiling an OS works the same way.
There are certain hardware elements which are closed in the N900, for example, the telephony. Thats why we are still dont have phone calls working in NITDroid when everything else works as it should. The devs are still trying to figure a way out to make use of these closed components.
Then there are certain constraints in Symbian, one being, till now it was designed for nHD screens ie, a resolution of 640*360. Hence certain UI elements need a rewrite. And Symbian 3 is more or less designed for capacitive screens but I guess we can get past that.

So, in short, compiling your source code would theoritically do nothing. There is a lot of work behind an OS. Like hardware adaptation for example. Feel free to check out the Meego & the NITDroid threads and you'll get what I'm saying.

Till then, my best wishes on your work and I'd like to see you reaching your goal. I was a dedicated Symbian user before I switched to N900 and though I personally dont see any benifit of porting native "unhacked" Symbian to N900, it would be great knowing the N900 can boot one more OS.

Cheers! :)

I saw that faenil, a well known symbian developer had been registered in the meego.com forums. Maybe he would be interested in the project if someone lends him a N900, try contacting him.

Yeah! Found an instruction how to build! Runs on Linux... But what a shame Nokia officially supports only Windoze server 2k3 or XP :PP

Re: Symbian^3 on N900?

What are the goals of this project? To have a Symbian OS running on the phone as it works on say, an N8? Because you have to know that this is impossible:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0uuqoOATm3E

That is Symbian running on a beagle board, if all you want is to boot it up to eshell, then that may work. But I don't know of a single free open source UI you can use on top of Symbian to make this project worthwhile.

i would also want symbian dual boot. you know why. well ovi map for india good support.

the most impostant is that symbain is the only os to support native video chat(over network min) well i didnot ment skype or google talk.

i ment gsm phone to gsm phone without internet. it so so lam that country like usa is not know to such teck.

well for video call over net is important.

undersatnd the important fact.

to use video chat you never need to connect you phone to wifi or gprs. it just like calling voice call. plus this way i save batrry drain.

daaaaa i have to carry two phone now. one n900 second n8. well now i tell my friend to buy only symbain mobile with fornt cam to use this beautiful native video call.

PS i know skype and gtalk but i guess it good on labtop. but why dont i use native video calling feature when it is for free of cost in india.

Sorry. It overwhelmed me. I overestimated my abiliites.
I cannot do it now.

Sorry for giving you hope...
I really thought it's such an easy job: only compile, copy and run ;)

Re: Symbian^3 on N900?

It would more useful to have any kind of binary emulator in order to run Symbian applications in Maemo. in the same way as Wine.

As most of the libraries are already open source (Qt) and the OS source is also available, it should be easier than creating a full emulation layer such as Wine only by reverse engineer.

You're right! If something like that is started, let me know, and I'll surely wanna help! (I doubt I can start it - I don't even know where to start ;) )
