Re: Gimmicks you might have missed on the N900

festivalnut: scrolling by keys works in all modes?

kobiblack: you have to swipe from outside the screen into it, the touch screen is larger than the actual screen so it knows when you come IN the screen from the "dead" black zone outside.

If this is news to you, swipe from left to right gives you a cursor so you can select text in browser, email and SMSs. Swiping from right in browser pops you into a thumbnailed, animated history. You are missing on your device if you don't swipe from sides. Also works great with images (though those you can swipe each way), but it's less error prone.

It's safe to delete this folder from the xterm (rm -R /home/user/MyDocs/.Trashes). I freed up about 6gb of space in doing so. >_<

if you empty you bin (while the phone is connected to the mac in mass storage) that folder should also be emptied.
by the way the windows does something similar... recyclebin or something like that is the name of the windows equivalent.

Windows does no such thing. Stop that.

Remote files mounted via SMB and removable drives such as floppy drives, sticks, (mass storage devices) and pre-written or mounted in packet mode optical drives don't get random folders created on them. Files get deleted.

Re: Gimmicks you might have missed on the N900

hmm then I wonder where the folder containing my "deleted" files on the USB disc (connected to an old XP) comes from?!

but you are right, i wasn't able to get that folder on my N900 or the storage card in the N900.

Re: Gimmicks you might have missed on the N900

Likely, formatting it badly, intentional or not. If it was ever configured for booting, installing OS, or an odd FS, it would be partitioned as a USB HDD.

Additionally, some "secure" sticks do this by hiding a partiton until password was correct.

An exception in any case. Normal removable storage doesn't do that. Maybe it was inserted in an old OS or an infected machine. A whole load of silly worms work like that, hiding in recycled folders.

Set files to all visible in explorer. Do you see an autorun.inf?

Re: Gimmicks you might have missed on the N900

On the chance that i get off-topic on my own thread:
One thing that annoyed me most on every mp3 player i bought was, that they force you to have your mp3's organized by ID3 tags. Well i don't because i record them via streamripper from internet streams (yeah i actually obtain them legally ;-).

And one of the most excellent features of the N900 is, that the media player automatically imports m3u playlists. And m3u's can be made by a simple find command.

My structure is as follows: I have a Music folder within my .sounds directory, which contaisn subfolders (Trance, Classic, temp, etc..)
In this folder I simply execute:

Code:

cd Music
rm *.m3u
ls -1| awk -F'dmy' '{printf ("find \"%s\" -type f | grep -v mediaartlocal> \"%s.m3u\"\n"),$0,$0;}' > temp.sh
sh temp.sh
rm temp.sh

Yeah i know, my shell coding sucks, but it does the trick ;-)

In the end, i put this command into creathPalylists.sh, of course, which i execute every now and then. You can use it for every directory where you want to create a playlist, of course....

Hope you can use it ;-)

Thank you! This tip is what I needed.

Great thread by the way.

Just discovered that ctrl+r refreshes the page, and pressing the up and down arrow simultaniously in the browser brings up the adress field

Ok, an old one:

You can easily have "phone", "contacts" and "messaging" icons on every desktop by replicating their shortcuts in “/usr/share/applications/hildon/”

The shortcuts are:
"rtcom-call-ui.desktop" - phone
"rtcom-messaging-ui.desktop" - conversations
"osso-addressbook.desktop" - contacts

And here's how you can easily access those files if you're not familiar with terminal.

yes and no, yes it will scroll up and down in normal mode but is of absolutely no use for what we're trying to achieve here! if you browse using the default theme here on n900 you can try it.

Sometimes I use the power button to exit an application.
Power button => end task.

E.g. When I have over 9000 webpages open.

Also: The quick link for locking the device:
Power button => "Secure device" (?)

Handy when you don't want people nosing through your stuff

In X Terminal, by pressing the volume control you can adjust the zoom (not size) of the font.
This is remebered with the next opening of X Terminal.

Re: Gimmicks you might have missed on the N900

It adjusts the font size. When maxed, it even says "already at maximumfont size"

In PR1.2 you can scroll to the top/bottom with shift-up/down.

Not really a part of the Firmware itself - They're from extras, or exploits.

__

Modify Your On-Screen Keyboard Layouts - Lets you change the keys on the Fn + Ctrl (Sym) menu

Load Applet - Aside from the obvious, it lets you record Screencasts! (Epic feature for me, but still haven't put it to good use.)

__

You can type with the keyboard not fully extended, allowing you to stay in Portrait mode (for certain apps), and type at the same time.

Arrow keys don't remap, though, so remember that.

Have searched to no avail.
How do you 'right click' on the N900?
(in order to get 'properties')
Thank you in advance.

Thank you in advance.

Give the screen a long press. That will give you the context menu.

When you have the program launcher grid on screen you will see that the grid is 3 rows deep by 5 columns wide.

If you look at your keyboard the following keys correspond to the grid positions described above: QWERT, ASDFG, ZXCVB.

Pressing the relevant key will launch the application in the corresponding position, e.g. pressing Q will open Web, pressing B will open Settings (assuming you still have the default positions in place).

Of course, this will only work for the first 15 apps.

Re: Gimmicks you might have missed on the N900

I need to find a simple easy txt list of all these hidden "gimmicks/extras".. if only i had the time to type one out, lol.

Ive just realised for mouse mode that i actually needed to drag the stylus from OUTSIDE of the main screen (the black area) to inside the browser/main screen (usually white) for it to work-not letting the stylus off the screen when I do it, so a fast "swipe" isnt necessary at all. The pen seems to detect any area on the front of the phone-not just the centre used for the main screen.. doh! :) No doubt already mentioned, but Ive noticed if I do it from the right hand side to the main screen area, that it will bring up the history screen.

Use volume keys to change font size in xterm.

I use xterm pretty much every day and I had my N900 for 9 months before I got that one. Felt like a right idiot.

This little embarrassing but I have had some grievance with image sharing and i have thought that how on earth it´s only possible to share one image at time. I have always used sharing icon from toolbar when watching pictures. And then I just happen to watch this video:

http://www.youtube.com/user/Maemo5UI.../5/tGXAVLSyc_E

And now i´m facepalming :)

Open gallery -> open top menu -> share images
Before doing that you can also filter images so you do not have to go trough all of them. And of course ctrl-a selects all.

Bulk email deletion:

Launch email application.
Open chosen folder.
Select "delete" from dropdown menu.
"ctrl-a" selects all messages in folder for deletion, tap individual messages to deselect.
Delete button now deletes all highlighted messages selected.
