after watching this video of the n8 I see nokia relay need to work on the UI especially the portrait keyboard.

Great app, I think a cursor would be useful, at least 2 arrows for left/right...
Thanks!

Definitely needs arrow keys, a virtual keyboard is virtually *cough* useless without them, if you don't want to use stylus for placing the cursor....
I'm actually waiting desperately for some kind-hearted person (equipped, unlike me, with the necessary programming knowledge) to add arrows to the stock landscape qwerty!
Has nobody else been missing those?

Thank you w00t and frals for starting this off!

Re: [Announce] portrait-keyboard: Portrait-friendly system-wide keyboard

Sorry, I'm not seeing a need for arrow keys. A usefulness, yes, and now that you've brought it up I suppose I can agree, but I feel it's a low priority feature. It does not take that much effort to put the cursor in the desired spot by using just fingers. If I can do it (with reasonable accuracy) on this post while typing from the N900 in the quick-reply box not zoomed in, with my blunt and inconveniently-opposite-of-stylus-like thumbs, I believe that other people can easily learn the skill through just a tiny bit of effort.

That said, I understand the convenience and expedience arrows would add for some people, so I agree.

In the meantime, frals, w00t, eternal, anyone else: How much money would I have to give you to get you to work on this project until it's finished and reasonably usable? I am being reasonably serious here. I feel like getting the N900 to it's full potential is extremely worth it, including paying for it (so long as it's understood that payment is for the service of working on the open-source project, not for the end-result product). Hopefully enough people will join me in this that no one has to spend too much, but we'll see.

So, someone who knows hildon and this keyboard project well enough: throw out a figure. What will it take for you to focus on this project?

I'd contribute too. Not huge amounts of money because i can't afford it, but i'd definitely contribute.

Are the screenshots above how this app stands now? Because i have it installed and i still have the page 1 images i.e. T9 layout not qwerty

No. Some of the screen shots "above" (technically previous pages) are mock-ups, some are what Eternal was working on in his clone (as I understand it) of this keyboard.

The most recent repos version is still pretty much the original package referred to in the first post. If you know how to compile from source into an optified installation deb, you probably could from eternal's clone (it's linked to on the source page linked to from the first post).

Thanks for the reply. I know nothing about coding or developing, but is it possible for the developers of this project to do what you said and have this up and running?

Re: [Announce] portrait-keyboard: Portrait-friendly system-wide keyboard

I think this is so much better than FastSMS and VertSMS. It just replaces the VK without being a separate app like FastSMS or needing you to install MyContacts, it is already integrated with email and SMS, and best of all it works with browsing. I can't see the point of portrait browsing if each new address or field to complete requires going back to landscape.

@developer, little off topic but, can you make the keyboard typing in unicode of different language than en(Nepali in my case) just as in pc (cntrl+shift to switch keyboard)?. There's a javascript which can do the thing: http://www.unicodenepali.com/unicodenepali/v2/, upon saving the page it can be used offline as well but its not comfortable to use it as I will need to switch to the page and then copy and paste the content back. I wish to have it in all the system(shift+cntrl or some shortcut). I might try to create it myself but I have no programing knowledge, yet I downloaded nokia qt(about a month back). the download was partially corrupted, yet it got installed and works partially. Now when I try to install deb created from that sdk(samples provided along with it) it says incompatible(dont remember it exactly). so can't even try to code. i have another wish of creating desktop widget to show Nepali calander in desktop but....

why not to download new version? because my internet is too too slow to download 900+ mb file from non resumable server(partially resumable). it took more that a week to download that curruptrd version.

btw i am sure creating custem calander will be possible, but is it possible to apply that unicode typing support systemwise as I said using qt?

It doesn't appear this is still being developed at all, let alone to incorporate even more suggestions

try to contact this author,
http://tinyurl.com/284fedl
they have the unicode nepali version for linux and multiple other OSes. when i was needing a Nepali Romanized Unicode for my mac, they provided me with all the files needed and instruction as well, now you can simply download it but they didnot have the mac version for download longtime ago when i needed it. i would love to see the localized version of maemo in Nepali. may be they can help since they have a linux desktop distro localized.

if you are talking about ui localizatin, then I don't think its of much difficulty. just translate a text file to Nepali and ask some developer who translated maemo5 to their language unofficially, to use set of string that we have provided. but i don't think many of us will need to use nepali ui but to type.

as I told, if you want ui localization then all you need to do is contact any devs who has unofficially translated maemo into their language, no need to know programing stuff! i have asked mpp devs about unicode nepali typing for maemo, they at least respon well. i have created a thread dedicated for nepali unicode typing, i hope to get something out of it.

Re: [Announce] portrait-keyboard: Portrait-friendly system-wide keyboard

It is shocking that as of now N900 still doesnt have as good portrait support as landscape. The landscape virtual kb may have some uses for the lazy but its really inessential with the exception of the arrow sym command. I was hoping for a system wide consistency (while not riddled with bugs) of using portrait on the N900 but its not here yet.

Even though a portrait qwerty kb might be released for the N900 some programs need to be tweaked to welcome it right? The maemo browser for instance in portrait doesnt even allow changing URL text in portrait etc.

Mentalist Traceur 2010-11-17 00:19

Re: [Announce] portrait-keyboard: Portrait-friendly system-wide keyboard

Well, every app that allows you to use a virtual keyboard will MOSTLY not need tweaks. Back when I tested this app a few months ago, you could still easily use the portrait VKB with any text box on the webpage, so at least you had that (though it was rather buggy, and I don't think it ever moved the text from keyboard input box to web page input box).

But yes, you wouldn't be able to type in a new URL. Which saddens me. MicroB is my favorite browser by far, but it's closed source, and thus mostly useless in so far as us changing it goes.

Re: [Announce] portrait-keyboard: Portrait-friendly system-wide keyboard

question?

so whenever we're running portrait enabled apps (ie. conversations), and are about to write something (which by default will pop the virtual keyboard and ruining the orientation back to landscape), will installing this will make it run the portrait keyboard instead?
but still preserve the original virtual keyboard on landscape orientation?

not that i don't like vertsms, fastsms or other similar apps. but i wish to keep using the original as much as i can :)
so this could be the remedy

Mentalist Traceur 2011-01-06 06:16

Re: [Announce] portrait-keyboard: Portrait-friendly system-wide keyboard

Nah. I wish it did that. But no, it replaces the hildon-input-method vkb (virtual keyboard) with this hildon-input-method vkb. And hildon isn't currently coded to support using different vkbs (virtual keyboards) in different modes.

This project is, well, very very dead. However, there's been talk of portrait-izing all of Hildon in some other threads - the only thing is, right now Qt on Maemo 5 has a horrible segfault-ing bug whenever a Qt app is launched while hildon is in portrait mode. So that's not going to hit mainstream use until that's fixed.

I love the keyboard in FastSMS, would be awesome if you can make it a standalone keyboard system wide. I would gladly pay for it.

Do you think that you just can use it in portrait mode and the standard one as it is now? I use едц a lot and with your very nice qwerty I have too press more buttons, can be annoying in the future, or something! But in portrait mode it would be awesome. :)

You have to press only one key to have access to "едц", like in standard kb I think...Or do you have they in standard layout?

However no, sorry, but it is impossible to have a kb for landascape and another for portrait (in my knowledgement).

When it will be ready I will try to hear all users to improve layout.

Now sorry but we are going really OT so I have to ask to move here http://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php?p=925143 for request and advice :)

Hi,

Is this thread still alive?
What's the status of a new portrait keyboard?
I know about fastsms evo, but I don't like the UI.
is it possible that ther's just a remake of the current portrait keyboard?
I mean something like Neboja posted at page 17

Thanks

Ur not serious??

SEARCH and READ!

If you have a look through the thread you will realise very quickly this project is dead. Nobody is maintaining it due to it being too time consuming..

Instead of clogging up the forum with repeat posts just have a search and read through the results.. Its really not that hard.

I wonder why would a Russian (am I really right?) wants Nepali Unicode in n900. Anyways we've got ukeyboard for that now. You can choose Nepali language in UKeyboard but its only on screen keyboard. Although its a bit hard to use onscreen keyboard for Nepali typing, it at least does the job.
