Re: [Announce] ApMeFo (beta 0.9-5) - Create custom folders in your Application Menu

Thank you for this application! This is a real life-saver and something like this should be builtin... I cannot really express how much I think ApMeFo rocks!

Then, to not just praise, I have a suggestion (which may or may not have been suggested earlier, didn't read all 17 pages...) for the application:

- When adding applications to a folder (with the "+"), applications that are already in that folder, should not be listed in the add-dialog, to avoid double (triple, quadruple, etc...) adding. Also, saves time from wondering whether I have XYZ already added to a folder, when it is not shown in the list.

Thanks!

After uninstall the application, All application icons are still grouped in ApMeFo folder.

If I install the ApMeFo again, N900 will throw exception as "Package Conflict..."

Please advice how to restore to the original settings.... Thanks...

Re: [Announce] ApMeFo (beta 0.9-5) - Create custom folders in your Application Menu

@cmsjkung . try rearranging the application icon position.

app Menu-> long press on an icon

tap on a new position.

done

This should revert all the changes done by ApMeFo.

@ must4get. I am able to create folders and see them in main menu. but not able to add any app to a folder. when I press + after selecting a folder it does not show any application list. I have tried many different versions as well. Actions which I have done.
1) Install it
2) activate it
3) created few folders
4) select a folder and tried + for adding apps
I dont see any app list to select.

Thanks

I hope you have figured how to add folders inside other folders. If not I can tell you, because it is easier to manage menus with this.

How can this be done through apmefo.I have setup the following layout by custom modifying the menu file:

Attachment 13036
Attachment 13037

If this can be achieved through apmefo then I will switch to using this app.

Are the icons used by Catorise/Application Manager usable and if so, where can I find them?

selvaarun 2010-08-18 13:18

Re: [Announce] ApMeFo (beta 0.9-5) - Create custom folders in your Application Menu

Yes it is usable. you can find the icons at /usr/share/icons/hicolor/48x48/hildon/

If you want different icons then copy them to /usr/share/icons/hicolor/48x48/hildon/ then you should be able to use them using Apmefo.

I am still having same issue that I am not able to add any apps to folders. I am able to create folder. I have installed Catorise and uninstall them before installing apmefo but I suspect Catorise is messing something up. I read somewhere saying Catorise use System wide hildon menu and apmefo uses user specific hildon menu.
I have manually edited the submunus (http://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php?t=37874&page=11) now.

My menu look like this :)

@Metalov did you uninstall Catorise? if so then icons also will be removed as part of uninstallation. If you want Catorise icons then you have to install it and make a copy of /usr/share/icons/hicolor/48x48/hildon/ to user space (/home/user/MyDocs) which will have Catorise icons as well. then uninstall Catorise and copy the icons back to original location, now you will have Catorise icons. hope this help you.

@cmsjkung Try this
have you got rootsh installed? if not installed it first.

open xterm
sudo gainroot
apt-get remove apmefo
apt-get clean
apt-get autoclean
apt-get upgrade -y
reboot

then after reboot:

open xterm
sudo gainroot
apt-get install apmefo
apt-get clean

hope this would work.

I didn't uninstall Catorise, no. I've browsed throughout the whole folder on my desktop PC a few times already and didn't notice those icons. Would you be so kind as to provide their names if you can see them there?

What would a collision have to do with not being able to find the icons? Besides, they're also used by the default application manager which means they're somewhere there by default.

In my opinion it is always a good idea to post how you have solved a problem if you have asked before. Perhaps someone else will have this problem, too.

I am waiting for ApMeFo author to return from vacations so he will be able to send me real sources of application so I could improve UI a bit.

Sources which are in extras-devel contain generated files but no original *.ui ones.

I have also problems with apmefo which can't add applications in folders any more. Purging and reinstalling was unsuccessful.
I also erased /home/user/.config/menus and /home/user/.local/share/applications/hildon/*.directory - but still apmefo can't add applications.

Same error messages, but it only started happening after I install Gas-Balls. Probably take a look later at the python code to see what is wrong...

Follow-up from my previous comment.

After uninstalling Gas-Balls, I could edit folder again in ApMeFo. Gas-Balls probably change some part of hildon-home that confused ApMeFo. Maybe file a bug to ApMeFo and let author decides what to do...

Edit: lol there's no bug tracker....

Something wrong with Gas-balls itself. Just removing its .desktop file makes ApMeFo working well.

Re: [Announce] ApMeFo (beta 0.9-5) - Create custom folders in your Application Menu

Has anyone managed to figure out hpw to put folders onto desktop yet? It would be so handy if I could just have a folder with some games in, one with some apps and web links or something, and one with other mis stuff in. This would save cluttering up the desktop, just like apmefo saves on cluttering up the app menu.

Sorry if this is old news or has been answered ages ago. I couldn't find anything else about it& I'm on my lunch here at work :)

I'm curious, what exactly about the ApMeFo UI do you not like / intend to change? I personally like it just fine right now.

Quote:

2. Just an odd question, but why, when -entering- a category/folder, the graphic is zooming -out-, not in?
This was brought up a few pages back, I just wanted to address it - simply put, this is just how Maemo does things. When you press the top left icon on your desktop to go to the running applications view (or just to the menu if you have no running apps), background zooms out. When you go from running applications to menu, background zooms out again. So when you go from menu to a folder created by ApMeFo, it just does the same thing.

I really don't think this is an issue with the app. In fact, I would love it if it stayed the same by default - though I am a fan of apps giving people choices, but perhaps this might be better addressed through transition customization in themes?

(If you want, you can simply think about it differently - you ARE going 'into' the folder, it's just you're 'looking' backwards, so you drop into the folder back-first, and thus the background, outside the folder, zooms out.)

Make it more finger friendly, drop usage of non standard font sizes. re-arrange some elements.

What would you rearrange? Also, is there anything other than the ^ and (down arrow button) and the + - buttons that you consider not finger friendly?

What a pity! After updating PyQt4 (4.7.5) this ApMeFo and many other apps stopped working. Is it casuality? I tried the code at the begining of this thread (python /opt/ApMeFo/Main.py) and I got a message error related to an API v7 when requested v8 (sorry, I'm too ignorant about this ...). I'm really inloved with this ApMeFo app. Hope it works soon again!!!

  • Horizontal tab bar translates poorly to mobile applications, especially in landscape view. If a tab bar is really necessary (it's not), it should at least be vertical
  • [Text Box] [Select] is fairly awkward for choosing whether to edit or create a new folder.
  • [Text Box] [Select] is really awkward for choosing an icon. It's unlikely I'll be able to choose an icon by just typing in a name, even if I'm going off of memory. And using text to describe the icon takes up more space than just showing the icon.
  • [Text Box] [Select] is really awkward for choosing a folder to delete, because I can't even use the text box.
  • Selecting an icon is somewhat difficult, due to the large number of icons to choose from. A grid of icons would be preferable to icon - name list
  • Having separate buttons to actually create/edit/delete/update folders after already selecting a folder to create/edit/delete/update is redundant. If the UI is intuitive, there shouldn't be any need to confirm that I actually want to do what I was trying to do. (As for preventing accidental deletion, that would be better served by a popup warning if the selected folder contains apps)
  • When choosing applications to add to a folder, applications that have already been added to the folder are not filtered

My general idea for reorganizing the app would be merging the Create, Delete, and Add App tabs into a single listview. + and - buttons on one side for adding/deleting folders from the list. 3 columns on the list, with Icon, Name, and # of Apps. Tapping a row in the list would allow editing the selected column for that folder. Once the app is considered stable enough, the activate/deactivate can be removed entirely (or activated by default and moved to the app menu).

Edit: Oh, and one more thing. I'd recommend using the existing hildon.menu as a starting point for the layout. If I have already spent time reorganizing the menu without using folders, and just try to use ApMeFo to stick a few unwanted icons into another folder, I'll find that all of my other applications have been reordered, while I would expect the current order to be unaffected.
