If other people have the same problem please report it there...

Anyway, if you want, you can send logs file placed in /opt/fastsms/data

I haven't installed fastsmsevo yet and have seen this issue a few times after PR 1.3 upgrade.

I hope soon...Now I'm quite busy with university exams, but in a pair of weeks I will be back. There are some things to fix before it hits extra-repo...

if you open conversations and it flips to portrait, its hard to get your vkb to show, then the txt you type doesnt go into text box after closing vkb. appreciate your hard work, look forward to any updates.

who needs nokia? :D

Re: [ANNOUNCE] FastSMSEvo: system virtual keyboard T9/Qwerty

Oh, I don't have the bugs reported within the CSSU thread involving this vkb. If opening the vkb in a portrait-locked app, as per the CSSU forced rotation (not exactly auto; but close enough) it does get stuck in portrait, but you say you already fixed that). Realsportcars: are you already upgrading the the CSSU yourself, or do you still want me to dilligently report any bugs if I do get any (none so far, hence my silence in this thread).

I think the idea of disabling the keyboard in landscape (or portrait, if you for some odd reason wanted to) was included in the initial pages back suggestion that realsportscars liked about making it a settings option to have landscape/portrait each be seperately set to default qwerty/alphanum vkbs, or disabled). No need to make it default tho.

Re % symbol suggestion: There's currently a bunch of repeats in the vkb in the Shift+123 and 123 key sets. Namely, these symbols repeat:
, ! ? - _ @ : ; " ' #

Of these, ! ? and , already exist within the normal and Shift key sets, and - exists twice in the Shift+123 set, so they can probably be removed, giving 8 free key slots. Removing one each of the remaining duplicates means 7 extra slots. % could easily be one of those replaced. Another symbol I'd suggest is the degree character °, and, well, up to realsportscars what he wants to do from there. A "Tab" key would be nice too.

Meanwhile, I have two other usability suggestions: Make the Backspace key (delete character to the left of the cursor) become a Delete key (delete character to the right of the cursor) for 123 and 123+Shift key sets. It's one of those things you barely notice when you don't have it, but find convenient when you do (I mapped Delete to my Fn+Backspace character).

Also, I still think you should move the space key over to more of the keyboard center in Qwerty and move the enter key over to the other side of the space bar (basically switch space and enter keys). I routinely accidentally press Enter when I mean to press Space when using the vkb with my left hand. (Right hand is fine, but it's unsymmetrical, and while it can be gotten used to, I think a more centered space bar is better.)

Re: [ANNOUNCE] FastSMSEvo: system virtual keyboard T9/Qwerty

I've a little update that solve problems related to CSSU 12.1 but I can't upload due maemo.org seems to be down...

This fixes also the problem related to portrait/landscape autorotation when you close the vkb.

This works ONLY if you are using CSSU 12.1 or above and if you have forced-autorotation enabled!

@Mentalist: I will prepare a list of improvements for future updates and also a road-map based on community suggestions, so I don't risk to lose some good advice like yours :)

Perhaps attach the built package so it can be tested?

This solves focus returning to the window automatically when using VKB in portrait mode with CSSU 12+ forced rotation?

If i understood what you mean, yes: if you are in portrait and close the vkb, UI don't returns to landscape.
However now meamo.org is up and I just commited last package...

I need a feedback specially from people that uses a custom theme with a custom transitions.ini file

Did you reboot (or kill fastsms) after the upgrade???If yes, please go in /opt/fastsms/data/fastsms.log and check in first lines something like "Autorotation is ON" or "Can't find transitions.ini"
A video could be very helpful

Thank you. This is a quite delicate moment due to big and hard works done by CSSU so every feedback will be appreciated :)

Re: [ANNOUNCE] FastSMSEvo: system virtual keyboard T9/Qwerty

wow... erm... noticed that the bootup for the vkb takes EXTRA long now... or maybe this is just situational... only for the first time around though...

besides that, no issues (tested via conversations) i.e.
1. able to rotate while vkb is on with text without losing text
2. able to touch outside the screen and text inserts to conversations normally with whatever orientation.

basically, no abnormalities at the moment and everything seems fine

Just the FIRST start up takes a realllllly long time... sometimes, I thought it would never pop up

Re: [ANNOUNCE] FastSMSEvo: system virtual keyboard T9/Qwerty

Seems to be sorted. Is it possible to draw the overlay smaller or placing a button that will suppress the VKB? When in portrait mode in a Conversations daughter window, only the top title-bar is active to get out of "edit" mode.

:) I think that extra boot time could be situational: I only add a check on transitions.ini file. No more than few milliseconds are needed for this parse, but, perhaps, if your memory is busy by another process, this could requires extra time...
Anyway I've experienced that sometimes first boot doesn't works well if performed in portait...

No, not in my intentions. Read my answer to Dark_Angel85...
However, for first run, you can start it from icon, than minimizing it (don't close) and then use normally tapping in edit-box.

Yes, I think that a smaller text field is possible, but I'm curious to know what is the problem about this...

LOL!
I think you know this but you don't need to reboot all the phone: simply open fastsms from the icon and then close it from there...

hawaii 2011-02-23 01:06

Re: [ANNOUNCE] FastSMSEvo: system virtual keyboard T9/Qwerty

The reason behind a smaller input area is for ease of use in portrait mode and reduce the small area one has to select in order to exit the VKB.

You probably have a bunch of stuff that runs/loads in the background at boot.

I have a somewhat heavy clock style for advanced clock plugin, and it takes a full minute for my status area to actually load when doing a boot up from completely off.

ALSO, I just realized something, for a week or two now, I've been getting a bug where "killall hildon-desktop" would result in some completely blank black pop up appearing and not going away after Hildon Desktop finished loading. Just now after updating to the fixed autorotation CSSU and fixed autorotation FastSMS, I got the same bug after finishing the update and doing the "killall hildon-desktop" command.

Normally, this bug means I can still enter text into the window under it. However, killing hildon desktop again would just cause the same thing to pop up again. However, after this update, I was able to randomly mess around with it, until suddenly, the mysterious black popup finished loading and turned out to be the FastSMS VKB, at which point I was able to click out of it, and no reboot was required. It made me pretty happy.

Now that I know it's this VKB related, I'll report on here if it keeps coming up.

Meanwhile, not seeing any bugs during actual use now with these last updates either.

Re: [ANNOUNCE] FastSMSEvo: system virtual keyboard T9/Qwerty

Also, Realsportscars, I am about to post this in the CSSU thread too, but:

/etc/hildon/theme/transitions.ini is always the current theme's transitions.ini file, if it has one.

Basically, /etc/hildon/theme is always a symlink to the current theme. So if the above path transitions.ini exists, then you can use that command the hawaii posted to check if they have rotation forcing enabled. If that file doesn't exist, you then drop to checking the 'main' system one. As far as I know that covers everything - but for all I know theme customizer does something wierd with it's own transitions ini. *Shrug*

Re: [ANNOUNCE] FastSMSEvo: system virtual keyboard T9/Qwerty

Hey,

Been a great fan of your work, since the FastSMS days. This virtual keyboard replacement is truly a godsend especially now with the added system wide portrait work done by the Community SSU.

Here is a little bug report plus a future request :)

When using TwimGo your keyboard doesnt seem to function properly. Sometimes it inserts the text and other times nothing happens. Not sure if its a Qt bug but hopefully its fixable, being able to tweet with one hand would be perfect :)

For the feature request, I was hoping you could add the option to enable "Touch Screen Vibration" (haptic feedback) when using your virtual keyboard.

The reason for this is that I hate touch screen vibration apart from certain places and the virtual keyboard is the main place I desire this feature. It makes it easier to know when you have pressed a letter ect, but I dont like how in maemo the default setting turns the vibration on EVERYWHERE :(

Would it be possible to enable a little vibration feedback when ur keyboard is open and then disable it when your keyboard is closed?

Thanks for the awesome apps! :)

Re: [ANNOUNCE] FastSMSEvo: system virtual keyboard T9/Qwerty

It's definitely possible, FWIW.

Mentalist Traceur 2011-02-24 03:51

Re: [ANNOUNCE] FastSMSEvo: system virtual keyboard T9/Qwerty

It would be possible, though I think it should be kept outside the vkb package... Perhaps the tactile package, or something CSSU-side, can help implement some soft of tactile-feedback detailed settings?

hawaii 2011-02-24 04:22

Re: [ANNOUNCE] FastSMSEvo: system virtual keyboard T9/Qwerty

I suppose it would be possible to disable and enable it upon VKB display, regardless of the loaded plugins.

DBUS seems to pass an Introspect member? But it doesn't send it once the VKB is hidden.

Download last version from devel...

@godofwar424:
I know that in the last CSSU there is an option to enable use of "tactile". I didn't tried it yet, but perhaps this is what you are looking for. Is it?

EDIT:
about TwimGo: I don't know if it is the same app, but some times ago I read a thread about a twitter app that lose text also with standard keyboard. If it is the same application I can't do anything. however I will try to install and test it. What repository I must look?

I am using the 'tactile' option from the CSSU but that does not work when using your keyboard. Theres is no feedback when using your keyboard :(

I cannot find a thread for the development of tactile plugin either meaning I cannot ask the developer to implement it in your keyboard, I was hoping you could allow users who desire this function to enable it, in a config file in your keyboard?

For TwimGo the developer created a newer version using Qt and it can be downloaded from here.

TwimGo

Thanks

Numbers are in last position. In this way you can insert they simply pressing "prev".

What do you mean with "and vibe when only using your keyboard ??" ?

I've got an idea for you: either write your own app so that it meets your precise need OR you can modify /opt/fastsms/data/plain.txt and ad any symbol you want in what ever order your heart desires...
