Some thoughts about improving:

1. Make horizontal sliders smaller and more transparent or even hide them. Horizontal swipe anywhere on a screen can change primary parameter, two-finger horizontal swipe can change secondary. Vertical swipe is for manual focus.

2. Make manual focusing slider more informative. Hyperfocal range (blue segment) will be very helpfull with such small sensor.

3. Make mode/focus/raw-jpg/flash modes collapsible so they won't block viewfinder.

4. If possible make shutter speed of 1/30 minimum visible (i mean in viewfinder) to user. So we can compose on longer shutter speeds.

And here is also more "serious" and "meegoish" icon, maybe you like it better:

1. Make horizontal sliders lighter or hide them to free viewfinder. We can change primary parameter by swiping horizontal anywhere on a screen, two-finger swipe will change secondary parameter, vertical swipe for focus.

2. Make focus slider more usefull, with scale and hyperfocal range (very usefull on such small sensor)

3. Make minimum visible in viewfinder shutter speed = 1/30, so we can compose on slower shutter speeds.

Also i made a new icon, more "serious" and "meegoish" :) maybe you like it better:

@grenka Nice ideas. 1 & 2 will be considered, though #1 will conflict with point focus.
#3 will remain as is, maybe there could be an option to cap it, but I think the current behavior gives you a good idea about when you are holding stable.

The icon will also remain, but you can submit your icon to the alternate icons package maintainer maybe they'd like to include it.

@soryuuha It is already available in apps4meego testing repository and as a paid app in Nokia Store for anybody who would like to contribute.

Borrowing the image made by grenka, here is my idea on how pcam capture-UI could look like:
1. place ISO and shutter on two sides and use swipe gesture instead of slider which means swipe up or down on them would increase or decrease the value above.
2. Bottom placement for the manual focus, the thumb can easily reach this area when phone in landscape.
3. Each item on top acts as a switcher, tap to change to the another or there could be a drop-down menu like in default camera app.

4. the capturing part will auto-hide while user configure settings and slides in 0,5-1s after user lift his/her finger from the screen.

There could be some illogical parts in this but hope you find something useful from this for your app :)

Nah, slider is more convenient for both fast, and slow-precise adjust of values. I don't like idea of emulating touchpad with "swipe areas" - swipe ui is enough pain as it is, no need to incorporate it into somehow productivity-oriented (as opposed to candy looking sweet cheerleader'ish UI oriented things) application, in my opinion ;)

I have been trying all day to fix the bugs that rawcam has (it doesn't close cleanly). I resulted in a little bit better code but the bugs are still there. It's not fun trying to nail them down anymore so I decided to let them go and focus on new features. I won't check out the vertical lines either, sorry PsychEinside but as they don't affect the photos I think it's minor.

An what about overlay bug? Did you managed to fix it? It's the only thing that prevents me from using rawcam.

Unfortunately I can't find it. I've checked and re-checked the code that defines the overlay but I cannot find anything wrong with it.

The even more frustrating thing is that the bug now happens the *second* time that I open rawcam after a reboot (that is why I thought I fixed it). Also google does not provide any info about N9 and video overlay (funnily enough rawcam is the second result of "harmattan video overlay" google search query.

I also tried CameraPro N9 (link) because it offers features similar to rawcam - manual control of exposure/focus/iso/flash plus DNG capture. I definetly can say that rawcam is better than CameraPro at many aspects, but CameraPro doesn't have overlay bug. Maybe you could contact the author of CameraPro and ask him how he managed to prevent overlay bug? I think he uses somehow the same technique as you in his app.

Please do the following test:
1. Reboot
2. Open rawcam and take a picture. Closer rawcam
3. Repeat step 2
4. Open video player (overlay should be dimmed)
5. Open camerapro. Close camerapro
6. Open videoplayer.

Is the video still dimmed?

Nah, it didn't help - video is still dimmed.

BTW, now I'm using KMPlayer+MPlayer to watch videos and overlay bug causes video in KMPlayer to be not dimmed but comepletely black! Didn't go over the whole thread, but could it be that the overlay changes the xv color key. Maybe reset it to 'auto' on exit

It does chnange the color key, but I'm saving the old one into a variable and restoring it upon exit, but still...

I haven't seen an auto option though, do you have a code snippet or reference page handy?

Atom xv_atom = XInternAtom(mDisplay, "XV_COLORKEY",False);
XvSetPortAttribute( mDisplay, xv_port, xv_atom, vo_colorkey );

and vo_colorkey is probably NULL as far as I grepped for CK_METHOD_AUTOPAINT and vo_colorkey.

Update with some googling, it should be XV_AUTOPAINT_COLORKEY set to 1

I think I fixed it, I think I fixed it! Please test so It's not a third false alarm...

(as the bonus, there is 16:9 aspect ratio support too)

Note, it's only for the N9. 16:9 is of no real use on the N900, (you can just crop the image) and on the N900 there's no overlay bug. (There's a bug with the default camera which I haven't solved yet)

Overlay problem seems gone with 1.0.2, but new images taken with ρcam are not shown in gallery app. New images taken with the default camera app or images from older ρcam versions show up fine.

@ladoga on 1.0.2 if you quit right away after snapping photos are not being saved. Here's a 1.0.3 with that problem resolved.

On the other hand, your problem might be unrelated, see pages 6-7 of this thread.

1.0.3 also has image stabilization :) please test and comment.

Burst mode takes 8 pictures and keeps the sharpest (just like FCamera). Accelerometer mode waits for your hand to stabilize before snapping. If you take too long to stabilize the threshold increases so that it eventually takes a picture.

The values might need some tweaking but it seems that it works as expected though I haven't tested it in real life.

So today is my first try of rawcam and im really impressed :)
man you did a very good job, Well done ( the images size jumped to 3 MB :D ).
let me just say : i will only use the stock camera app for videos only ;)
btw is it possible to make rawcam take widescreen photos ?

It is possible, it's already here for the N9, but on the N900 it's kind of pointless as the 16:9 picture on the N900 is just a cropped version of the 4:3 image. In general I am trying to keep rawcam have only features you can't do later. So don't expect things like filters or effects in rawcam. The 16:9 feature is an exception and will probably land in the N900 for the sake of consistency.

After some real-life testing, accelerometer mode works only in very low light, as the accelerometer produces values at maximum 100Hz. Thus when the shutter speed is fast enough, the difference between two consecutive frames returns zero and the photo is snapped right away. I will try to fix that.

Very interesting stuff, thanks a lot for this. I wonder, are there any things, that are present in fCam (Maemo), yet lacking in rawcam? Also, do you know "lowlight" - a fCam derrivative, that takes low-light images, by shotting two frames, quickly - one with low exposure and high iso, and one with opposite setting - and combining them?

I think, that accelerometer stabilization mixed with above method could produce even better results (or not, if time between frames would be too long). What do ya think?

Edit: Same applies to "HDR picture" - another fCam derrivative, that takes few frames and combines them into HDR image. I wonder, if it could benefit for accelerometer stabilization, too? Both are FOSS, BTW.

Yes I sometimes noticed this and I was debating if I should crank up the exposure a bit before capturing, but that would affect various devices differently. In normal conditions this difference shouldn't be too big, so I'm inclined to say, learn your device and adjust likewise, or later in software.

This happens even in professional SLR's where the screen (or various computer screens as a matter of fact) display the image a bit differently.

The accelerometer stablization hasn't made it to the N900 yet but it will (as soon as the autobuilder is back up). Also you can expect some more stabilization options too.

Fcamera still has some features that ρcam doesn't, like hdr capture.

Remember I told you about these weird lines I had before? Well , I'm almost sure it is the result of some kind of software conflict with your app and another one (even though I'm not using any).:confused:
The app works fine for a couple of days and then these horrible lines appear again. :mad:

The only solution I found was to reinstall the app.
Do you have any ideas what could cause these artefacts?

It's really weird, please try to pinpoint it, as I won't be able to look into it if I can't reproduce it. You say that uninstalling and reinstalling fixes the problem?

Maybe try deleting the .rawcam folder from /home/user rawcam.conf file from /home/user/.config/oob/, (settings will be reset)

ρCam does nothing but save new pictures in jpg and dng format in MyDocs/DCIM (no API calls or anything, it would be the same if you just copied a picture there yourself)

It is possible that the existence of dng images in DCIM breaks something. If disabling DNG save from settings solves the problem then I can change the location that the DNG files are being saved

On the other hand the breakage might occur every time a big file is written and tracker tries to read it and create a preview.
