@araknos: Maybe you did not read first post, but there is already thread for kernel power development. See first post of this thread, there is written how to compile kernel-power.

Thank you for your generous time. I suggest adding some extra human lines in that post for newbies, for actually compiling the "debian way":
1. outside scratchbox, "cd kernel-power-2.6.xx/debian/build/kernel-power" (or might get troublesome)
2. "make menuconfig" if you want to change anything

still i cant see how to actualli build a kernel image
make -f ?
make-kpkg?

Thanks

Then I decided to start fresh and I got the CSSU update. Now, I would to go back to having the kernel power. Is there anyway for me to go back? I tried to install kernel power v51 but when I check on x term, I get 2.6.28-omap1.

Can anyone help or address me to the proper thread? Thank you!

Re: [Announce] kernel-power stable v51 in Extras-Devel

@GreyZeppelin,

Which version/flavor of CSSU did you install? AFAIK only CSSU-thumb requires (comes with) a new kernel (which is actually the same as KP51).

If CSSU replaced your kernel, then please go to the CSSU thread and complain about it! :)

In any case, nothing prevents you from apt-get install'ing kernel-power. What's the problem?

Re: [Announce] kernel-power stable v51 in Extras-Devel

I currently have the Maemo 5 CSSU Package, version 21.2011.38-1Tmaemo5.1

Thank you, I will ask the CSSU thread about it then.

Actually, I've attempted to installed kernel power many time but I still have the same kernel (2.6.28-omap1.) everytime I check on x term with uname -r.

Besides rebooting (the only way to make a new kernel become active, except using kexec() which doesn't work anyway), you might also try to install kernel-power again AND POST THE EXACT OUTPUT OF RUNNING APT-GET/DPKG when you do that. This way we can see if there was any error when installing.

If you, for some reason, don't want to try to install kp again you could run "dpkg -l | grep kernel" and, again, POST THE EXACT OUTPUT.

Sorry for SHOUTING :), but I reckon 30% (if not 60%) of the messages in this whole forum could have been saved if people provided "supporting evidence" of their problems ("flashing doesn't work", "u-boot removed by nitdroid", etc.)

Cheers, and good luck!

See that first post. dpkg-buildpackage -b doing all, it generate deb packages. if you want only boot image it is in debian/kernel-power-bootimg/boot/

@FreemanGordon

Yes, even after reboots or turning off and on the device, no changes happen.

Re: [Announce] kernel-power stable v51 in Extras-Devel

@GreyZeppelin, did you rebooted? Do you have multiboot installed?

peterleinchen 2012-09-22 12:00

Re: [Announce] kernel-power stable v51 in Extras-Devel

Good question pali! That just came to my mind when I read yesterday's posts e-mail, but you were faster.
I would also ask if possibly u-boot installed?
Boot with keyboard open or check via dpkg -l | grep boot

pali 2012-09-22 12:10

Re: [Announce] kernel-power stable v51 in Extras-Devel

multiboot is program which flashing some kernel when device is booted. so it can remove flashed kernel.

u-boot only loading kernel from device (emmc, sd card), so when you flash kernel, u-boot is deleted and nobody will not overwrite it.

in output from GreyZeppelin we can see that kernel-power *was* flashed into nand.

peterleinchen 2012-09-22 12:36

Re: [Announce] kernel-power stable v51 in Extras-Devel

Yep, you are right from your point of view.
But I believ you are not using multiboot, right?
And I experienced that having once flashed a u-boot combined kernel, I could flash other Maemo kernels (with multiboot, so on device flashing) and u-boot was still available.
That was my reason to ask for u-boot too.

But if flashed kernel via USB, u-boot was gone and also having flashed another kernel like nitdroid or nemo erased u-boot. If you have a bit time to explain why this behaves differently?

reinob 2012-09-23 13:20

Re: [Announce] kernel-power stable v51 in Extras-Devel

@peterleinchen,

U-boot can (for now :) only be installed in the kernel partition. Meaning the kernel proper has to be piggybacked on U-boot.

Multiboot flashes kernels. If the flashed kernel already contains U-boot, then you obviously continue to have U-boot.

So when you say "I could flash other Maemo kernels (with multiboot) and u-boot was still available" it means either you told multiboot to flash a kernel that itself included U-boot, or (unlikely) multiboot is doing some behind-the-scenes magic to append the kernel to an existing U-boot if found. Very unlikely.

Sounds like vodoo, eh?
But exactly these are my experiences.
I flashed once a ....
oh wait
... gimme me a few minutes!

Oh, I really feel like the most foolish noob :(
Please excuse me for spreading nonsense.
I just rechecked that again and flashing standard omap kernel also vanishes u-boot (I had that the other way round in mind).
I will try to explain briefly:
I had multiboot with KP47 and I made a u-boot combined KP47 kernel. I added a new item for multiboot with foollowing entries:
ITEM_NAME="Maemo kernel-power 2.6.28.10-power47u-boot"
ITEM_KERNEL="2.6.28.10-power47u-boot"
ITEM_MODULES="ext3"
The experienced user will directly see my mistake.
Kernel name is/was of course "2.6.28.10-power47" for both of my kernels.
So my u-boot combined image did not really boot (kernel name different to given name), but I had to let multiboot start my old PK47 item. And the u-boot remained. Therefore I stated above, as I really thought u-boot had overcome the 'multiboot flash' (which indeed did not happen at all because of same kernel name).
When I changed to KP50 and edited my (multiboot) /sbin/preinit to get framebuffer and rescue console support, I analysed a bit more detailed that code and found my mistake.
I made that change:
Code:

                #peterleinchen
                #if [ -z "$KERNEL" -o "$KERNEL" == "$(uname -r)" ]
                if [ -z "$KERNEL" -o "$KERNEL" == "$(uname -r)" -o "$KERNEL" == "$(uname -r)u-boot" ]

(okay could also just have renamed ITEM_KERNEL) and then it worked/booted correctly. Of course still going back to plain KP will require flashing omap (nitdroid, ...) and then plain KP kernel, as uname -r is same. But mainly I use u-boot now (thanks pali).

I hope someone understood my "palaver".
And again:
Sorry.

-- the most embarassing point is I knew that already, but somehow my FIFO stack head overflow ;)

Is it possible to get smartreflex working up to 1000 MHz or higher?

Estel 2012-10-02 06:39

Re: [Announce] kernel-power stable v51 in Extras-Devel

Possible - yes, if someone would spend high amount of time calculating and field-testing efuse values for 1000mhz, (or even up to 1150 mhz) like freemangordon did for 500-900.

Feasible - no, as 1000 mhz isn't sane frequency to use on N900. Using anything above 900 mhz isn't very wise thing to do RAM limits You anyway, and gain is purely numerological, with unnecessary risk involved.

If You want, You can calculate SR for steps above 900, and test it well - I think that Pali or freemangordon would accept patch for KP, if done properly. But I doubt any of them would interested in risking their devices, to test or do it themselves.

My N900 was not used for a while and it was off. When I tried to power it on, battery was completely dead. And it would not charge. It blinked with a short red light. I thought that battery was garbage.
So, I used a spare battery. I tried again with the first battery. no go at all.
spare battery in.
Then I saw pre-release kp v52 mentioning something about bq2415x and rx51_battery drivers and it was the only reason I gave it a try.
I tried again the first battery and it charges again.
I couldn’t be happier.
Thanks to pali and everyone involved.

Hi, I'm new in this community, I have 2 weeks with my N900 and I learn a lot, I discover all the time how powerful is this "phone" . I recently installed KP v51 successfully and Cleven works fine, the only thing was to redirect to folder with injections kernel drivers the bleeding-edge driver switch and even than cleven says that aren't the right drivers, works fine, monitor and injection. Thanks for all this work ... :)

For people, that are only using kernel-power-bootimg (multiboot, u-boot, etc):

Is promised option of *not* flashing kernel upon installation implemented into kernel-power-flasher, already? As you remember, it is important, as bootimage doesn't provide anything, now.

Just asking, not demanding :)

@Estel, now solution to ask user if want to change kernel (flash to nand) is ready for testing.

Source code is on: https://code.launchpad.net/~pali/+ju...age-update-ask

DEB package is now in Extras-Devel & Extras-Testing:
http://maemo.org/packages/view/fiasco-image-update-ask/

It replace via dpkg-divert shell script /sbin/fiasco-image-update, which is used for flashing fiasco images.

Since I made the first remark about it, I might as well try it :)

It seems to work fine (assuming I did the test the right way).

I had installed KP51 on my second device, and upgraded to KP52.

This is bad malloc in zimage-get-version.c failed. But if failed it returns empty version and script try to use other method to get version string (e.g test if image is not kernel, but uboot).

But if version string is empty it ask for flashing.

is there will be any changes in this version, or it is last one ? because something wrong here with power52 version while trying to boot it with u-boot, tried with 4-1 and 4-3 versions when i try to boot this kernel, phone just shutdowns. In this way i tried to boot it:

after that i reinstall u-boot and update item files. Trying to reboot into power52 kernel and phone just shutdowns while booting. But without u-boot kernel boots fine. After all i also tried to boot kernel-cssu and power51 to make sure if everything is ok with my phone, and both booted also fine with u-boot while power 52 fails...

Did you try renaming item file to something different than "default", like "20-Maemo5-kernel-power-2.6.28.10-power52.item"? (just a silly idea to check;)) And, as you may have seen in the other thread http://talk.maemo.org/showpost.php?p...9&postcount=54 , in power kernel 51 (at least on my device) there is one more line:
Code:

ITEM_MODULES="softcursor bitblit font fbcon"
maybe try adding it?

Re: [Announce] kernel-power stable v51 in Extras-Devel

I solved the problem by redownloading and reinstalling all kernel packages, now boots ok, IDK what was wrong but everything looks the same, and yes i tried renaming before .item file :) after i tried to add your suggested line into working .item file i can't boot it shows that maemo is loading and i waited few minutes nothing, just rebooted and removed that line. I think i something missing to use this line in .item so i don't need it, but would be really interesting to know what it does exactly :) :)

P.S Thanks for help! :)
