Or did i miss your answer?

It would be possible to do a pdf that prints out in real life size and could be cut to a mockup so people who have concernes with sizes can have a little foretaste.

The quick way is to have a similar sized phone, like iphone plus or whatever... and enlarge one of the ID picture until the screen on picture the same size as the device's screen, and you'll have idea how big the keys underneath.

Let's save paper. :)

How's the UI of android in landscape? In iOS it's terrible, dozen of apps are portrait-only and if they are landscape the UI elements get utterly big. Bought BT slider for my workphone but thing is, almost don't use it because of the clumsy UI and integration.

N900 is still my device of choice for typing mails. Too bad it doesn't support whatsapp anymore, because too much communication happen through whatsapp.

Re: [Brainstorm][Maybe the real one?] Maemo Community Device

Better than on iOS but still far from great (better on tablets). Sailfish is better but some apps are portarit only. On android also. The only phone with proper landscape was N900. Where people complained about the lack of portrait support.

Hi Chen,

This is a fantastic idea. Thanks for all of your work so far Chen :)

Perhaps you could rename this thread to something more appropriate/descriptive? ('IndieGogo campaign launched for Moto Z physical keyboard mod', or something?)

FYI: just placed a link to your campaign and this thread in the forum of a Dutch tech site, Tweakers.net:
https://gathering.tweakers.net/forum...40197#50440197 (it's in Dutch ;))
Hope this helps generate some publicity.

Re: [IGG Live][Slider Keyboard] Keyboard Mod for Moto Z

Anyone of the backers here planning to port Sailfish to Moto Z or do you buy the keyboard for use with android?

@chenliangchen
The IGG site is a bit vague regarding if battery will be included. Can you give a rough estimate on when you think that will be decided? A week? After the campaign has ended?

@chenliangchen
By scandic keyboard you mean ÅÄÖ?

- Regarding battery. We are working with Moto engineers for the prototype. The challenge now is the connecting part - where the metal connectors and magnets are - can't reduce thickness. We are working hard to reduce the top weight and make the mod as slim as possible. This will take about a week from now. Until that part is confirmed I can't guarantee the battery (which is on the bottom). Having it or not will be balanced by overall thickness and comfortness in hand. That is why I did not put 100% confirmed at the moment.

- Yes.

At least the default Launcher on Moto Z supports landscape. And most service I'm using supports landscape (well for typing at least) But Android landscape layout needs to be improved, some useless banners/element just too big.

Hi there,
First congrats to chenliangchen !

For the porting question, actually it seems Moto Z play has a partially working cm13: https://forum.xda-developers.com/mot...4/post69504998

Google Location Provider seem to be the issue, but I assume sailfish does not need that !

Great device !

More crucially, the Moto Mods part of the device isn't working under Cyanogen but I guess middleware will have to be created for Sailfish anyway.

As for how to approach it? jump into the #sailfishos-porters channel and talk to us, maybe someone wants to do it, maybe someone really wants a keyboarded device too and is willing to work to make it happen? who knows its up to those individuals as to how they spend their time.

The other challenge will be to transfer the Moto Mods platform across OS... At lease for the keyboard! :D

Suggestion : compare the size of Nokia N900 keyboard x Keyboard Mod for Moto Z. If possible with numbers and also 2 superposed figures.

As many users here loved the Nokia N900 keyboard, so it is a reference for us.

First off I'd like to say congratulations on the launch chenliangchen! I've already backed the product and so have many people I know. Alot of people are getting excited over this in the forums and irc communities I frequent :). I have some suggestions though if its not too late to add them to the IGG:
I think it'd be nice to add some kind of lower priced stickers perk so that people who are not interested in the Moto Z/Play devices can have something so they can support the cause and let the industry know that we are here, and we want physical keyboards. Shirts or even small accessories would be ever better but I don't want to take away too much time from your focus on the keyboard itself. I think its a good marketing idea and it will help meet your goal because its quite ambitious.

Thank you for your support and suggestions! Really hope this can be successful and the manufacturer in China will have more confident designing/making an all in one slider phone. This is still the eventual goal!

I now think that the space between the keys is enough. Now I looked more closely at the form of the keys. It can be seen in the pictures of the campaign that you chose a "curvy surface", the keys are "curvy comfort keys".
I tried a lot of small keyboards (Psion 5mx, HP 100lx, N900, some small bluetooth keyboards). The best form in my opinion is a flat key, or even slightly curved concave (like the Psion 5MX). Maybe you can rethink this design? It might even make the device a bit thinner.

Not sure if you can share the details at this stage, but if you do, how keyboard connection is implemented in hardware and software for Android? TOHKBD has a daemon which connects to userspace-exposed I2C and GPIO interfaces, reads the keys and in turn creates userspace input device. If it's something similar, the daemon code could be mostly reused.

I would like to try porting SailfishOS, but Moto Z is far from the budget device, unfortunately.

Edit: Found https://developer.motorola.com/explore/firmware. The SailfishOS software will probably need to talk to "Greybus" interface then, unless keyboard is exposed as proper HID device by kernel.

For information, Greybus is now part of the Linux kernel, but only very recently, with the release of Linux 4.9 in last December :
https://www.linux.com/news/linux-ker...t-release-ever

So depending of the linux kernel available for the Moto X (which will probably be older than 4.9) and if the greybus code used for the android version is available in their repository, the job will be to backport some of this to the older kernel, or adding a dedicated kernel driver with minimal greybus-to-keyboard handling code. Not sure of the difficulty of doing this, but probably not a plug and play thing.

Well, tell us more about how the mod is designed !
From the first figure in https://developer.motorola.com/explo...m-architecture I can see USB3 and USB2/myDP do not pass through the MuC (I assume Greybus is between the phone and the MuC). From your own video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z0LChJXj2Dw I see you are using a regular USB keyboard, so I hope you just tap to those exposed USB pins, which is the same result as if you would plug it in the USB-C connector. If it is the case, support across OS doesn't seem too complicated...

Or did you add (yet another) micro that hosts the keyboard, converts to I2C/UART, sends to the MuC ? :D Sounds like pure madness.

I don't know which interfaced was chosen but the HID interface was probably chosen as the firmware already exists.

lets hope for some news sites picking up the story this week. I compiled some emails to heise.de, golem.de and others to raise awareness.

Edit, golem did an early mention a week ago

Thank you Mosen! By today our campaign was #1 in terms of funding pledged!

I am so busy these days with all the engineering aspects. Even with a slider part (which I updated today) a lot of jobs involved with the component supplier, all goes into details! But we will manage!

And hopefully by later this month we have the 1st working prototype, I will try to do something big to attract more attentions (keep that secret for now :)

I did my best to keep the battery!

To maintain a proper and reasonable thickness the battery will be around 1500mAh, but it's better than not having any at all.

I hope pichlo is satisfied....:p

I can imagine creative ways to turn this into a success even in that case.
Let me speculate.
From a business perspective, it would be a bargain for moto to buy out livermorium from a nearly finished product.
Also the other recent moto mods seem to be doing concidearbly less good on IGG and moto most likely needs something to show off as a decent Mod, so further support is not unlikely imho.
Only two ways of thinking positive ;)

Anyone has a clue what is going on with this man?

Certainly he is not the only one in this world knows how to make a keyboard. And he apparantly has no idea how mass production works.

I'm trying to ignore him but looks like he is in a mood of teaching me lesson constantly.

Don't like it! I hope his behaviour does not end up like his product.

I can see where dirk is coming from.
He seems to have real doubt because the way you are doing things differs very much from his experience.
As long as you can answer his remarks as solved for yourself, all should be good.
Communication could solve this but its one of those "ain't no body got time for that" dilemma again...
The worst thing is to put fuel to the fire.
I would advise everybody to stay calm and not draw conclusions on tiny fact basis.

But he is trying to "teach" me for quite a few times in an uncomfortable way.

Normally if the field I'm not familiar, I won't have confidence to write to others in such an irritating way.

I lost my patience (and respect) writing to him in "PR" way, and I'm not a PR!

But I got what you say. We are very close to the first working prototype now. So everything will be clear.

I don't care what he says/moans, he won't change the fact this product will be GREAT! :D
