Just tell how they make money on the OS if fully open :O Not even Google do that and they main bussiness is not OS. In Jolla case mainbussiness IS the OS.

They plan to produce hardware, so I wouldn't preclude the possiblity of open UI. What if community would develop a UI that is better than Jolla's. Shouldn't they use it then? Closed UI can't be a cornerstone of the business (it just sounds wrong). RedHat manages to do business without relying on a closed OS. How are they doing it? There are other services to sell - expertise in the system, support, active development and etc. Closed OS is not a hard requirement for success, but if it would be open - they'll have to figure out what to profit from, I agree.

you cant compare server market with mobile market, also if I remem er correct RH has closed stuff.

in case of jollas hw, there is no chance for jolla to make theyr own hw. They have to ask bigger companys to do the hw for them. Its reality.

Noone uses keyboard with qml apps, but the fact Qt is easiest/most portable doesn't mean a QML xterm is going to replace osso-xterm/mrxvt or hundreds of other apps that are best used with actual keys (be it in default OS, or chroot or else)

Surely they won't create their own CPUs, GPUs and etc. They'll go with existing system on chip solutions. Even Nokia and Apple never did such thing. But what stops them from designing the composition of the device themselves using other parts as building blocks? Making original design and unique devices can give them an advantage.

Server market was just an example. It's also competitive if you didn't notice. My point was - closed OS is not a requirement to be successful in a competitive environment.

I'm sure I heard in interviews they are making and releasing their own hardware

Well it has been confirmed that the design will come from Jolla, but they have revealed previously that the phone will be made in Asia by 3rd party. So probably Compal, Foxconn, you name it.
Example in Nokia's case Lumia 800 was obviously all Nokia in design, but supposedly some of the guts of the device was planned by Compal (them having more experience with Qualcomm that Nokia always stayed away).

Seems like Jolla does want to be an open platform:

Also they posted this:

Quote:

Yes - Jolla's first smartphone is to have a screen bigger than 3.5 inches - For detailed specs, you will have to wait till they are announced later this quarter, though. The device itself should be available by this summer.

Summary:
- They will be as open as possible
- Screen will be bigger than 3.5" (N9 is 3.9" for reference)
- Detailed specs to be announced Q1
- Device should be available by the summer

From all the news and partnership it's pretty much clear that Jolla phone will be powered by ST-ERICSON's NovaThor CPU.

Well at CES ST-ERICSON showed off their new NovaThor chipset - the L8580.

Ok here is what's cool/features:
Quote:

It comes with a low-power eQuad processor with four Cortext-A9 cores, clocked at up to 2.5 GHz, the PowerVR SGS544 GPU and the ability to go low-power and run at 0.6V.

The NovaThor L8580 can deal with 1080p video and support display resolutions of up to 1920 x 1200 pixels. 20MP primary cameras and 5 MP secondary ones are allowed too and there's built-in LTE HSPA+, TD-SCDMA and EDGE radios. 3D reproduction and capture is also on board if that's your thing.
