Hi manojkumaru!
Yes, there is still people using the N900, and some intensively, from what I could read, even for tasks much easier doable with other machines ;):D
How much? I can't say.
There is a thread How many of you still use N900 as main phone? but the last post is from 2015.
We could wake it up or make a new one for 2020!
By my side, I can say 4 people with 5 N900.
Cheers and welcome back!

Hello everyone,

A little while ago I started getting into MeeGo, Maemo, Sailfish, ...
And I decided to start a telegram group which focuses on these OS'es.
A member of my group gave the suggestion to post here about the group and that maybe some of you wanted to join.

The group is on telegram: https://t.me/meegoosinternational

Thank you very much :)

Hello to all! New here from the north of Argentina. I've been thinking a lot about buy a Nokia N9. Can it be a daily driver in this 2020 following the "resurrection N9" wiki entry?. It's a refurbished model from aliexpress

Frankly, I don't think so.
Depends on your definition of "daily driver" - telephony etc. works fine, but there's no modern browser available.
Email might also get tricky.
And a refurbished from aliexpress, that sounds positively fishy.

Hello, all! Newbie here!

I got an N9 this weekend and have promptly installed Ubiboot and postmarketOS on it. I'm in love with the possibilities.

If someone has some experience with the N9 drivers or postmarketOS or has info that can help me improve the port, feel free to nudge me! I'm currently looking through what is worth working on.

Cheers!

Hi everyone!

I've been interested in this community for a while but didn't have a TMO account until now.

Anyway, I own a Fxtec Pro1, a N900 and 3 PinePhones and currently using the Pro1 as a PDA.

Cheers!

Yep! These are:
  • Dev Phone v1.0: used to be for development, but got the UBports one. I plan to give this away to my friend for appdev.
  • UBports v1.2: main phone for development
  • postmarketOS 3GB v1.2a: unused, currently keeping it in my closet :)

In case you'll sell any of them please let me know. I am willing to give it a try on development

Unfortunately, I don't sell any of my devices.

If you scour around eBay, you may find a very good deal. I recommend postmarketOS or later edition devices as USB-C is fixed on these allowing you to plug in external devices.

At about $150 for a 2gb RAM/16gb EMMC Pinephone(out of stock until sept) is is almost a cheap as I have been seeing used N900s anymore. The 3/32GB version which includes a USB/HDMI/ethernet dock is $200. So not that expensive but it is important to note that even Mobian(Debian Mobile) is still pretty beta version but progressing. It is only a hacker phone for now like the Nokia 770 was perhaps rougher as it is a community built OS working towards Debian grade reliability. I will not assume your personal economics but it is a pretty good deal for hyper-custom hardware, just remember right now it is all super alpha/beta not a consumer commodity product. I am still using my N900 for everyday stuff like phone calls and audio books.

Apparently, that's possible with GPIO pins on the back. Right now I'm hyped for the official clamshell keyboard as I can add the phone into my PDA list (and bring it out to the sun).

Still pre-release though, I hope they are adding the i2c multiplexer so we can cram more stuff inside it.

That's not for me, since it's not a slider landscape keyboard with thumb-typing haptics.

I've used such devices in the form of the Psion 5 and Psion Netbook. Switching my touch typing between those and a fullsize keyboard crossed the streams in the muscle-memory in my brain. Blue smoke flowed out of my of ears and frazzling noises were audible... There was no way to keep the muscle memory seperate, for me.

A thumb keyboard trains a seperate part of my memory, and thus doesn't trigger associative cross-signaling.

I like the hardware keyboards, too. are the digital ones cheaper? Is that the reason everything's made with those? or is it a marketing thing?

I'm not sure what you mean by 'digital'.

If you mean typical 'slab' phones where typing is done on-screen versus phones with a slider mechanism, it seems obvious that there are additional engineering and manufacturing costs with the slider + hardware keyboard.

I don't know how high those are, perhaps someone from fxtec could tell us.

Every moving part, every mechanical switch, every mechanical connector, these are the parts that are the most expensive to build, esp. if you want to make them last (more than a couple of years). Countless are the "smart" phones that, after the warranty runs out, are perfectly fine except for the power switch, or the USB connector (charger).

Hi everyone,

I'm a former N900 user and I wish to make it work again after a few years of retirement.
Before my beloved N900 I've never had any PDA, it was my first one in 2010.
Furthermore I'm a Linux user since the twentieth century, and I found it incredible to get it in my pocket !

I hope I will fix the few problems on my device with a little help. ;)

Welcome petitevieille!
You are aware of Maemo Leste?

Hi petitevieille,

Welcome!
Feel free to ask!
By curiosity, what did you use since you stopped using your N900?

petitevieille 2022-04-09 13:12

Re: New members say hello !

Hi,

I discovered Leste here, but I've just begun by restoring Maemo 5 for now.

After my N900 I used a Nexus 4, then I tried Ubuntu Touch on a BQ phone for a while. When the phone broke, I used CyanogenMod on a ZUK. The next one, and the current one, is a Xiaomi Note 4 running /e/ OS. I think I'll keep this one as long as the hardware works well.

Re: New members say hello !

Welcome! The best way to find info here is to use some search engine and add "maemo talk" on the search. Works better than the search on this site. N9 info you can find by choosing the device from the main menu's device list. There is also an active group on telegram if you happen to use it.

Re: New members say hello !

Even better way is to add " site:talk.maemo.org" to the Google search query, so only TMO results will show up ;)
(or other syntax which desired search engine supports)
