Í've seen this question asked at least a 100times but I've not been able to find a clear awnser so I'm sorry for asking it again:
Is there a chance of getting the gsm/3g connections to work?
It's probably a closed source kernel module for maemo that communicates with the phone.

see first post, its under development but is no easy job so be patient.
