After a few Palm Treos, I got a E61i (when it had been already out for a year or so) and I was very badly impressed by that agoraphobic piece of inferior software that they call Symbian. Very nice hardware, very high-quality. But it is as if the phone came with handcuffs on.

Now, all I see and read about the N900 indicates that at Nokia there is someone with a clue, as regards what a really useful telephone could be.

Thus: do as you wish, but I will buy a N900. When it comes out. The only thing that would make me reconsider is if they were to release a system that was less open than in the pre-release.

Please refer to the post you quoted and realize that I never said a word bad about Nokia, in fact I praise them for making good phones. But it's their marketing tactics that should bother people, not their phones.

For the record; Nokia makes great phones!, but they treat their customers like ****. And that is the reason I feel that we should teach them a lesson. I don't think there's a single person who is not frustrated with Nokia by now, and if I was running Nokia I'd be embarrassed, but as history has clearly stated; they don't care about pushing dates back nor care about their customers.

Re: N900 shipping delayed

My guess is that Peter is under orders to be quiet. Think about it. He is just an employee trying to do his job and doing the best he can to make us happy. Yes, the phone is delayed. Oh well. Nokia found some issues that it wanted to fix before releasing it. I am sure Nokia is working hard to get it out. And as I said before, it would be nice of Nokia to give some sort of token gift of appreciation to those that can prove that they pre-ordered before 10-01-09, for example.

However, I find it disturbing that some people here are talking as if their happiness depended on the N900. I have lived happily without it so far and will hopefully go on living happily after it quits working for me in a couple of years (hopefully more). Yes, the N900 will be fun to play with for a little while, but like any toy, after you have played with it for a while it will get old. Happiness is not found in the things you have, but in treating others with love.

Re: N900 shipping delayed

Oh dear. But I have to say it.. tee hee!

I feel very sorry to the people who believed what the customer service people were reading from screens. It remainds me that Amazon swore blind to me that the phone would ship on the 2nd - just 48 hours before changing their minds. It's like that. I knew better than to believe them.

The reality is:

Initial date was set for 26th Oct.

Nokia realised they weren't going to make that.

Peter gave us a date of 'November'. Last I looked, it's still November, no? He also said that we would know from Nokia itself when devices leave the factory. And that devices are not going to magically appear in shops.

Now, unfortunately, Nokia UK is actually no more than a retail arm of Nokia. I had a 'Nokia' employee tell me on the 31st Oct that he could supply one, according to the screen he was reading, immediately. He also told me it had to be returned to Nokia (being too complex for the local experts) every single time it needs a firmware update. That was about when I realised just how much he knew about what he was talking about.

Drones on Sales phone-lines repeat what is on the screen. Optimistic people in warehouses might put their best guess on the screen. But Nokia themselves have said only 'November'. They haven't lied to us. Except that someone did say that they're 'hopeful' for November at one of the flagship store events, which means they may need to set it back again.

I find myself wondering whether the certainty about the 9th actually came because someone at Nokia UK (sales) read it here and saw how certain the people here were...

The device will ship when it ships. Hopefully during November.

You misunderstand. Not one of us have any issues with Nokia wanting to give out a better device to the public, we all welcome that.

The thing that has pee'd most of us off is that Nokia (especially Nokia uk) have gave us the 9th Nov date on the phones. Obviously they have decided against this but it just feels that they are messing us about and using the carrot on a stick method to keep us interested.

Nokia treats its customers really well, the problem is who it considers to be its customers. Nokia is still working in a world where phone carriers are its customers instead of the end consumers. Did you notice the way UK carriers started releasing pricing information recently? That's because they have information direct from Nokia about when the release will be.

Except those optimistic people would have been from Nokia, given that it was Nokia's retail arm drones repeating what was on their screens, so Nokia themselves had actually given a date internally for this.

I find that really, really hard to believe. I don't know whether you contacted them personally, but I talked to a large number of people there (over this and a few other bits and pieces), and the result was always, without exception, the same. Rumours won't do anything close to that.

(This would also probably go against their training and policy of reading what was on their screen, as you already pointed out.)

It's still on target for that, sure. The exact response I got was "the 19th", and a close associate of mine also just heard 'next week'.

To me, the irony is that Nokia unveiled the N900 back at the end of summer, and it was an amazing device, something I truly couldn't live without.

Then they gave me 2+ months to test my theory. Turns out I CAN live without it, quite well.

I'm certainly planning to buy one eventually, when they're not so insanely difficult to get in Canada (at a reasonable price, anyway). But I suspect many impulse purchases were lost. Perhaps this is a good thing?

Why would they bother? Peter already clearly said that ANYTHING other than an official Nokia press release is not a solid date. So in effect he already made it clear that date was false without the need to keep posting every time someone came up with a new one.

I was told 16th by MPD although I just got in touch coz they wanted my PAC. I asked what the chances of another delay were? To which came back the response I couldn't promise anything. Suddenly 16th doesn't look so clever either.

you guys are all so funny. Does any one have any patients?! I'd rather have a good phone late than a buggy phone early.

Nokia have said Probably November. Can u guys not wait another month? I mean i know the phone is awesome and i as well as all of you will use the 3.5mm jack for more than just headphones its THAT good (and its THAT small ;) )

if anything everyone ranting here is a testament to how awesome the phone is gonna be, and of course providing a comedy read.

Re: N900 shipping delayed

Since everyone thinks Peter is "the man", and I suppose he must be (because he's head of Maemo Marketing at Nokia). Let's see what he actually said:

24 September 2009:
Quote:

...what we announced in the Nokia N900 press release is still the plan, no change: "The Nokia N900 will be available in select markets from October 2009..."
13 October 2009:
Quote:

Maemo 6 alpha SDK in q1 2010, beta in Q2 2010. Happy Waiting! ;-)
21 October 2009:
Quote:

There are a limited number of new Hutchinson 3G SIM cards that require a specific technical SIM card support in the mobile device. Nokia N900 has not originally been designed to support this operator requirement. As soon as we found out about this requirement, we started to work on the solution. A software update for the Nokia N900, estimated to be available by the end of this year, will fix this issue.
22 October 2009:
Quote:

We said at the Maemo Summit that portrait mode for the browser shall be made available as software update by Xmas 2009. I guess we don't want to wait that long for Nokia N900 first shipments? So, portrait browsing in browser will be out later than the first shipments.
22 October 2009:
Quote:

Not Sweden, nor UK, nor US, will get devices before we start shipments.

This information is fresh from Nokia and it takes some time for retailers to update their availability times. We haven't been sitting on this information just waiting for October to end. Otherwise we could have just waited until November, the 1st to tell you.
22 October 2009:
Quote:

In reference to your questions on the expected shipment date of the Nokia N900, let me tell you the latest information from Nokia:

The Nokia N900 is a great example of what we and the open source community have been able to achieve with Maemo software. We are working closely with open source developers and for example, at the Maemo Summit in October, we loaned 300 pre-production units to get more feedback from the community. This feedback is extremely important to us and as such we also want to provide the best user experience with the Nokia N900.

We expect it to start shipping during November 2009.

Peter Schneider
Head of Maemo Marketing
Nokia Corporation
22 October 2009:
Quote:

Ladies, gentlemen,

as much as I love the discussion, are you sure you want to continue these threads endlessly? The day we start shipping you will see a Nokia press release announcing just that. The first Nokia N900 will not magically appear in some shop suddenly, somewhere, sometime, but we will let you know when we start shipping from the factory.

And yes, we've gotten some decent feedback from the community after the Maemo Summit from those 300 devices we gave out with some things we haven't detected in our usual-for-all-devices testing around the world. Some of this feedback, we want to take into account in both the first sales software release i.e. PR1.0 and some in software updates we provide later this year.
22 October 2009:
Quote:

I think I can safely promise you "before 2012"! (Because I will look for another job if this thing soon doesn't leave the factory).
I like that last quote the best!

Regards,
Roger

I am disgusted with Nokia's customer relations.

Me too.
..but if that was true and you did get another phone you'd wish you had waited and got one, when it finally does come out.

@eiffel:

Not knowing who 'Peter' is I would think twice, if I was Nokia, before putting him infront of potential customers :)

Also, it's sort of odd to provide 300 loaners with the intention of getting additional feedback - the same month that the phone is about to be released.... It seems like the release date always was unrealistic and I guess that blame should go to the marketing department.

Can someone please explain to me at which point pre-ordering was supposed to make ANY difference at all to the release date? The only point of pre-ordering is so that you get it ASAP which will still be the case even if they delayed it a thousand times. You are getting exactly what you signed up for, the device as soon as its available.

Nobody made you pre-order, nobody signed a contract declaring that by pre-ordering you are absolutely guaranteed it will release on X date. Unfortunately being told verbally it will definitely release on X date is no guarantee and you should know better than to think it is.

what your saying would be true if they never announced a date for pre-order shipments but they did and people ordered b/c they was under the impression they would get it for mid October like Nokia stated, now that date as changed several times people have the right to be pissed off
