Re: N900 shipping delayed

This just goes to show that if Nokia planned on just making the techs happy, they would have already released the N900. Nokia wants other consumers to be happy too, so they are trying to make the N900 as consumer friendly before release.

Perhaps they had full intentions of releasing earlier, but got the hint that more than techs are ordering t his device. I think the N900 has become more popular across many consumer types than they thought, so they are smoothing things out before shipping.

Almost three weeks left in November, so I think the date will be later in the month so they have as much chance as possible to clean them there bugs and UI issues.

If the N900 ships with more portrait function, that will answer this for us.

ZANE Farooq says:
Its official, Nokia will announce the release date once the phone is released to let everyone know that they have released the phone on the release date that many people were expecting the release date to be, however, this will be for the UK only. US release will be determined once Nokia is released from telling the US when their release will be from posters who want to know the release date on "talk.maemo.org". Then and only then can they release info about the release of the release date on the release of the phone and when it will be released. Got it! :-)

P.S. I got a tip from an insider who says, and i quote, "they're going release the release date 1 hour before they release the phone to give retailers time to email customers about the impending release." .....Suhweeeeet!

from maemo.org

and from twitter:

well (according to nokia.co.uk) the N900 will be in the warehouse and shipping out tomorrow, PHEW,

Course all this could just be romours AGAIN

Re: N900 shipping delayed

I don't see why people are expecting the release information to come the same moment their n900 hits the doormat.

Last I heard, neither Nokia Uk, Nokia USA, not Amazon was located inside a Nokia factory.

We have been told there will be an announcement when the device ships from the factory. There will be at least one day taken between then and the device leaving the local vendor - Nokia UK or wherever. It is possible that the non-Nokia vendors may wait a few days longer. Then your device will ship.

So... if the device ships out of the factory tomorrow, there will be an announcements to that effect. It will then leave your vendor a day or two after that. It will NOT leave your vendor's warehouse before it has left the factory. Unless you live in a world where time is wibblywobblytimeywimey.

Hell, I bought a TV recently and the very first thing it did on being switched on was a firmware update, I wouldn't be worried about a phone doing the same thing.

Also; regardless of what the release date is, and what the source of the hold-up is, the decent thing to do is to tell us honestly what's going on, not deliberately keep us in the dark with only occasional vague hints to go on.

You could collect your phone in person and not have to spend an extra day fretting over the delivery.

Any reason why they should not sell the few they have ready before the last one is built? Do you think they put the screw in the hole at the left bottom for 100000 pieces and after that in the hole on the right top of them all? This would make something clear of course ...

Re: N900 shipping delayed

if yall really, REALLY..... REALLY want to know when it is going to ship, there are a couple things you could ACTIVELY do.

1. Social engineering:
get numbers, and call the people in the know... call nokia and try to worm information out of someone, saying you are someone else. Or call the factory, or wherever. This could also be done more deviously, by getting contact info for the factory, and then contacting to factory to try and get them to start shipping.

2. Petition:
This is a community device, Nokia NEEDS developers to help create apps for this device. Nokia should reciprocate, and be open with the community about it. Get enough signatures of people saying they will never buy nokia or help with maemo or related software, something will be done.

But complaining in this thread will definately not influence them in any way. I bet 1000 people leaving the high ups at Nokia messages could do some influencing too.

With so many different dates from different places, and the last REAL word from anyone that SHOULD know, was reported at the n900 official meetups. That word was that it might not be out till AFTER THE HOLIDAYS. Honestly this all seems like stringing people along, tell different places different dates, each a little further out.... strech it all out as much as possible.

hear hear, I agree, if it's supposed to be such an open platform, why are we all in the dark about when it is going to be released? I don't care if it was released in January if they just came out and gave a unambigious release date. Not something like "we expect to release it in January" yada yada which doesn't mean anything. I expect to win a million dollars, doesn't mean it's gonna happen...

If anyone watched and remembers Centurions...then this is for you:

In the near future,
Nok-kia and their flagship companion Stores,
delay the N900 to laugh at Earth.
Only one force can stop this evil.
A handful of brave men.
In specially created exo-frames,
they can be transported anywhere.
To fuse with incredible stealth-hacking systems.
Beamed down from the Dev-Station Maemo,
becoming Man and Machine, The Maemo Team.
Pete Schneider - Brilliant marketing operations commander.
Jussi Mäkinen - Rugged internet tablet specialist.
Ari Jaaksi - Daring chief operations expert.
Whatever the date,
they are ready.
The M'turions!

took me a few minutes lol, enjoy xD

Re: N900 shipping delayed

I just thought of another option. Instead of trying to social engineer the shipping date, or social engineer the factory to begin shipments, you could try to get one of the pre-production devices they send out to reviewers. Just claim to be associated with a popular but slightly obscure site that does not have an N900. But you should claim to be a marketing person or assistant or something... trying to get an n900 for someone else that does the reviews

You are getting exactly what you signed up for, the device as soon as its available....

If people seem to change to the dark site (Windows Mobile, Android, iPhoo...) this would make Nokia concentrate their work to bring it on the market ASAP.

Re: N900 shipping delayed

No, the last official word came from Peter at Maemo marketing. He said "November".

The only Official words to date have been Oct 26th and November. Words from a sales department, however well informed, even the company's own sales department are not Official.

As for badgering people High Up at Nokia, do you really think that's a good idea? All it will do is get people more hacked off.

The team planned to release it a fortnight after the 300 were loaned. They realised there was more to do, so set it back 'about a month'. I'm quite sure that the relevent people are working flat out on Whatever It Is they decided to improve so it will be available asap. Remember, Nokia themselves have a pile of money tied up in this, along with a lot of corporate kudos. They want it in the shops before the holiday shoping starts more than we do!

Cut them a break. Yes, it's a pain. Frankly, I never believed the 9th was a real date. We will hear as soon as the devices are flashed with the release firmware and start shipping out of the factories, which as far as I know are in somewhere far flung like South America, not anywhere near Nokia UK (Milton Keynes?) or even Finland.

I'd love to believe the devices will be in people's paws this week. But it ain't gonna happen.

Now I've got my Dorothy Parker quote out of the way, I might as well say that against my better judgement I rang Nokia to see what the state of play on my pre-order was. Chappie on the other end said that the N900 would be out before December. Which is exactly the official line. So chill out. Have a beer (assuming, unlike me, you're somewhere where that's possible).
